If FF makes you yawn, Sonic's likely to be close behind - it's a little more action-orientated, but not by much.
Cold's pretty funky, varied and quite fast-paced.
Dark? Dark's ace, action all the time, very powerful, massively versatile and pretty solo-able.
TA's pretty dull, it can be useful used and slotted right, but it's faintly pathetic when soloing.
Therm's kind of a mix between empathy and sonic... doesn't sound like that's going to be the one for you.
I agree with you on Rad, by the way - powerful it may be, but putting those two toggles up repeatedly gets very old, very quick.

I would highly recommend Dark/Nrg or Emp/Nrg - both are really fun, fast-paced powersets and I enjoy them.
Energy can be useful for knocking your anchor about, but I find Dark (for Tenebrous Tentacles, Dark Pit and even more -acc) or Rad (to cover a major debuffing hole in Dark's set) more useful. Psychic might be pretty powerful, too, what with the slowing and pleasantly-ranged cone.

Dont care but much about soloing since i log another toon if i cant get a team the only things i solo is unlocking shops and capes and midnight arc.
Dark is nice but i got a AR/Dark ruptor already.
Emp doesnt interest me at all.
Oh i got a thermal troller and i´m enjoying it.
So i´m left with Cold, TA and Sonic. The secondaries i´m interested are Psy/Dark/Rad.
But since i play a bit offensive i was wondering if i can do good damage with Sonic? oh and does dark light oil slick?
Cold looks most interesting to me, nice effects and unexplored powers (to me). TA is meh unless you combine it with archery because of a character concept. Then id go with dark because it doesn't root you like the rest of the powers.
To be honest, I can't help you much... only you know what you want to play as.

I plan a cold/Dark defender myself (just need to start a new super group team to give me regular play with it or something) I think the def, res and tohit debuffs would combine well. The imob should be handy with sleet and who doesn't love Heatloss??!

I can recommend sonic/psy and cold/sonic. Both are very fun and interesting combos

I concur. Debuffage from hell and no controllers stealing your thunder with their secondaries. Make everything miss you all entirely (or stand there quaking in fear) and then focus fire with a Scrapper or Blaster and watch bosses melt from your stacked -resist debuffs.
Once again no dark defender at this point since i have a dark corruptor. + Already have a sonic blaster and want to try some of the other blast sets.

That will depend on the secondary although I think its probably more suited to 'trollers, the buffs last longer than kin's speed boost and are much more visible, the aoe debuff is a huge end hog though but extremely effective. Expect to be fighting in melee range and use your attacks as your buffs are last a decent time or are toggles and your big debuff is also a toggle. The mez prot from your bubble should mean you don't need to use Clarity too oftem

Well having revisited my Ice/Cold corrupter and doing a Strike Force with them over the weekend how about Cold/Ice (or Cold/*).
Nice combo of buffs, some debuffs and very quick attacks.
A Cold/Dark Defender might be interesting too, quite team orientated but your Dark attacks & Self Heal give you some survivability yourself (my Ice/Cold is quite prone to AOEing a bunch and attracting too much aggro to survive, Dark gives you some -ToHit debuffs and eventually a self-heal).
Roll a Rad/Dark and giggle at foes futile attempts to hit you (I take by "no Dark" you mean Dark Miasma, not Dark Blast)
And i already said no rad. Hence concentrating on sonic and ta since i have a good grasp of colds abilities.

Just kidding man, now just bear in mind the ultimate defender truth, when playing any defender, the rest of the team are there just for you to make them uber when you wish to do so, they're nothing, absolutely nothing without your defender and whoever says otherwise, is telling liez!) 
Now i just have to figure out a leveling build with enough pew pew powers from rad.
Hmmm, begins to wonder what a TA/Sonic would be like? Is there a limit to -dam res?
