How the game has changed....
I joined at issue 6 so hard to say. I guess I grew up on a diet of Frostfire for breakfast until we got Safeguard missions and some different content pre-level 12. In a way Frostie became a right of passage. Once you'd run across the Hollows from lvl 5 and defeated him umpteen times, you had a pretty good idea of how good that toon was and if you survived the Hollows you'd got something worthwhile.
That doesn't happen now even with the Hollows makeover

Thelonious Monk
I'm trying to imagine a game with no Striga........ I might have gotten my first character to 50 quicker and not carried on with my alts if I hadn't been looking forward to that zone on them. Actually I might not have levelled much more at all.
Am sure the lack of Shadow Shards wouldn't concern some people too much, but am trying to imagine them not there and failing too

Capes! Capes came in issue 2, I think it was?

I joined just before issue six. I remember reading about the game when it was first released and thinking it looked a bit basic (I went on to play SWG, how stupid was I), but when I finally joined it seemed like a massive world.
Now I look at all the places there are to visit and its amazing how Ive got used to it all. Take me back to I6 and I suspect Id think it was a very small place. How easy it is for complacency to set in.
Ive just realised that it was I8 when Faultline got revamped. That only seems like last year!
I joined after CoV came out, so I missed a lot of the early stuff

Started at EU release, so that's I4.
From an individual standpoint, the powers have changed (many will say, been nerfed) by a huge dgree. MoG used to be perma-able, and a typical /Regen Scrapper was a GOD. Then it became a God-mode fight and escape power. Now MoG is a 15 second Clicky you use to soak Alphas.
ED, of course, came in with I6, changing the face of power structures by massively reducing the effect of enhancements. Prior to I6, a typical Scrapper (or Tank, or most other people's) attack power was slotted 1 acc, 5 dam, or sometimes 6 dam (which was actualy statistically stupid, but hey) and the damage numbers were truly awesome.
The introduction of the EB/AV duality in missions made it possible to do even the last 5 levels without teaming constantly. So the game with one of the best teaming mechanisms around also became one of the best soloing games there is.
What else...
Character body morph sliders. Those didn't exist until I5, I think, maybe later. Prior to that, you couldn't tweak body sliders after initial creation, and there were no face sliders.
Veteran rewards are pretty recent.
The Inventions system.
Bases weren't introduced until I6/CoV.
Yeah, the game is hugely different from what it was even when the EU servers started, and that was a year after the game began.

Yeah it changed a lot since the start. I came in just before they released the arena (i believe that was issue 3).
Thats what i love about a well developed game like this. It keeps expanding and getting better and better. Best thing is that because we alt so much, even the low level new stuff is nice to have.

It's also an extremely solid and stable game - there are very few bugs left that can seriously disrupt play.

I was wondering, since one of my earliest memories was Issue 4 arriving and everyone giving out about Arena. Think I was on a week or two at that stage.
Back then you could Flash almost every group with an AOE hold. I had a few weeks of multiple pets as well before it was cruelly nicked from me.
I should have put a link for people really

Hmmm. Still have never managed to do Hess, Eden or the Sewer trial
Tried to do Eden but the Leader bug got me (have to be level 37-39 to choose it).

This Sir is unforgivable, best TF ingame, fun, nice and short, it should be mandatory for everyone to do Hess.
Give a shout whenever you wish and we can arrange it, honestly, nobody should miss Hess.-

I know, it's a total sin. I suck!
I'll see what I can do, my WS is about the right level to do it. Problem is I tend to be erratic as to when I'll be on, especially over weekends.

This is also a sin! The Eden Trial is truely awesome (Btw... it's 39-41)
The Elflings are always running this one so keep your eye out in Defiant Events if you wanna give it a bash!
Oh yeah... And I've been around since I4 too and have seen a lot of the changes, though I must admit ED didn't make all that much difference to me... Mainly because I probably didn't know what I was doing back then... And some would say still dont

There I have to disagree. I thought Eden was the most godaweful boring thing I'd ever been on. Hess, on the other hand, is actually a not to be missed.

Me neither. I always thought it was better to hit and do damage, than miss, and statistically I'm right under ED. The huge damage numbers prior to ED possibly made a difference there though.

I joined 4 weeks before i4... it was great running a fire/fire tank... then came ED, aggro cap and people running away from burn ... my first toon was 733 hours to 50.... omg that's a long time!

Some mobs seem to run away from everything now, sometimes you only need to show your face and they're off. They really have gone overboard with that I think.

Some of them always did. The 'drug deal' type encounters where there's no victime. The 'dealer' will run off first chance he gets as soon as they aggro. It's been like that for as long as I can remember.

Lucky you!
I've not done Hess, my single attempt to do Eden was ruined because back in those days trying to do it with a single blaster, 3 Tanks and a Troller just wasn't going to work.
They are on my list to do, but this game has so many distractions...

wow been here since issue 6:O

I joined just before I8 launched. I would just like to thank PC Gamer for giving me a CoV trial and giving me 2 years on one of my most loved games I won't pick on you guys anymore!!!
There's been great memories, I can still remember my first team, all I remember I was on my first toon "Martialman" MA/Inv or MA/Regen it was and I was teaming with a Troller from the Netherlands . We were in a sewer mission with Vazhilok *blabs on*...
Back on topic, I agree and disagree with the changes since I started playing. What's changed and what's new:
Hero Paper Missions, in the form of Radio Missions
The New Faultline!!!
Veteran Rewards
Invention System
RWZ
Rikti Invasion Event!!! YAY!!!
Dual Blades and Willpower
Ouroboros
Midnighter Club
Cimerora
And that rounds it up. Lots of new stuff, good and bad.

Seconded. It's one of the ones where you really do feel like you're in a Bond/superhero movie. (Though I do think... SPOILER ALERT... ...that if they're going to have the base blowing up, it should REALLY be blowing up rather than "if you haven't exited by time X, you're dead". Destructible environments should be easy enough these days, as should massive chained explosions that you need to run like hell to get away from... )
The other one no-one should miss is the Faultline arc. And remember, smart savers go to Yin's Market!
Other St00f I've loved since I've joined:
- Faultline II
- Croatoa TF (though I hate, hate, HATE Red Caps)
- Invention System (I now have a blaster with almost as much natural regen than my /Regen Scrapper - and who's actually pretty handy in a firefight)
- All the Christmas, Halloween and Valentine events
- Every costume contest, won or lost
- The Dr. Creed arc
- The people
St00f I've hated:
- ED. Enough said.
- Arena combat as an empath (take out the healing support for the rest of the team and they'll fall... hence, being an empath in team PvP is like painting a damn great bullseye on your chest)
Is it time for the dance of joy yet?

Looking over at the shiny new US website, I was reading through the different stuff added into each issue, particularly issues 1,2 and 3.

I never realised just how much stuff we take for granted wasn't in the original version of the game!!
Passing Insps and Enhancements across as drag and drop only came in with issue 2, as did a better search system across the zones. Was it only available in the zone you were in originally??
The Malta, Carnies and Praetorians only appeared in Issue 1 and the Igenous didn't appear until Issue 2! And the Council only appeared in Issue 3??
Man, this must have been a seriously different game to begin with
Can any one else enlighten me as to any other minor things got changed, things we take for granted nowadays?
