Confessions of a not-so-'Super' Hero

EDIT: So sorry, I didn't realise 'til I posted this that I was in the wrong category; it probably should go in the General Category. If any Moderator wants to move it that's fine - would've done it myself but I couldn't figure out how to

So here I am, controlling a bunch of snappily-dressed (well, with maybe a few fashion-crisis exceptions...) heroines, saving Paragon City and earning the adulation of the public. Because hey, they really are super, super heroes...

...Except they're not. Whiter than white? More like a muddy shade of grey - and I'm not talking dark and dingy pasts here. No, my heroes do bad bad things every day, and the guilt has become so bad that I have felt the need to confess my sins in the hope that I can save my soul (or something.)

So here goes... deep breath...

1 - My hero of choice is running down the street, when she hears the cry of a helpless little old lady. Her purse is being stolen by a big nasty Fallen Gunner, whilst his mate stands by with a chuffin' great baseball bat! Do I rush to save her? NO!!! Because they're conning grey to me and I'll get no xp and buggie-all influence for my trouble!

2 - My Grav/Emp Controller has just got the Propel power. Hoorah! It rocks! Now not only can I hurt the baddies very much, but I can have great moments of hilarity doing it as I watch random items of both office and street furniture appear and fly towards them! But... who's going to clean them all up afterwards? Not me, that's for sure - I just toddle off leaving the place looking like an explosion in IKEA. What about the Health and Safety aspects? One unsuspecting passer-by didn't see the giant office desk I conjured and quite obliviously booted it up the street for a good hundred yards! He could've killed a kid - or a cat! My god, I even left a giant globe thing in the middle of the road once... that could've caused a massive accident!

3 - I'm wandering around The Hollows, and I overhear sweet words of love from an innocent young girl. She talks to her big, tough, tattooed boyfriend about the two of them being 'star-crossed lovers.' So what do I do? Why, I smack the bejasus out of her lover-boy, right in front of her very eyes! just because he's a Outcast Slammer, and I'm trying to rack up some kills on them so's I can get my Badge!

Is this how Superman would behave - or Spiderman? I don't think so! Call myself a hero? I'm a menace to society!

Seriously though - does anyone else get these tiny twinges of guilt occasionally... or is this Nature's way of telling me I need to get out more?

Perhaps I once briefly felt a twinge of guilt tanking Lusca thinking why are we killing this beatiful creator of nature do we all really need that much Sushi.
But then being a good tank I just told it it's mother was a bottom feeding prawn and laugh at it's effort to squash me while my mates Ganked it.
The Sushi and Saki party that night (weekend?) is still legendry in some circles today.

I console myself on the first point that it must be okay to ignore these street crimes. After all, members of the Freedom Phalanx stand around various parts of the city doing just that all the time!

If the Freedom Phalanx can do it, we can too!

Anything you can do, I can do better. I can ignore a woman being mugged better than you.

No you can't!

Yes I can!

No you can't!

... yeah.

Let's face it, being a hazard zone means that only heroes and police forces are allowed to enter, they are actually breaking the law being there in the first place, not to mention it's doing them a favour, they get teleported to the Zig where they are safer as they can't run into igneous forces.

Perhaps a badge for 'Preventing xx Muggings' would appeviate this guilt a little?

Ohhh.... I take the loiterers too. Even if they're just sitting on walls discussing the movie they saw last night. Oh noooooooo, something else to feel guilty about now..!!

It's a well known fact that Superman is a d**k, and has done much, much worse in his time.

Great post thanks for the giggle

I've sometimes thought exactly this myself, but I figure it this way - When you outlevel a zone you're more important than your average newbie hero. You take on something of the Avengers/JLA mantle and so it's falling to you to save the world, etc

But, there are plenty of Newbies hot on your heels and how can they get experience (not just XP) if you take out every wrong doer in the zone before they can. There are plenty of PPD/Longbow around the low lying areas, Galaxy, atlas etc. If you're on a "50 minutes to save the world" gig, stopping to mop up some skuls or hellions would be tactically very very wrong. Leave it to somebody else - as Obi Wan put it "we must do our job so they can do theirs"

If some little old lady gets wasted in the process... well at least there's a world left in which her grand kids can mourn her (ok overly cynical but you take my point I hope.)

As for the stuff left in the streets - there has to be some kind of team in Paragon that is funded by the various hero/city agencies to clean up the damage that villains, Giant Monsters and heroes do. Sure, the game engine doesn't support damage to the environment (except in bank missions) but there must be an extensive network of these guys, fixing buildings, cars, mailboxes. Just as there are all the cars and not a single filling station, it's a dev oversight, but doesn't mean it doesn't exist. So your grav troller leaves some junk about and 2 minutes later, the Man from Ikea comes and takes the stuff away - you'll see it in the bargain basement of your local Ikea store tomorrow, slightly damaged, a bit scorched and a massive £12.75 off of that £250 price tag. Hey, of course you only need three legs on that sofa!

Yes, and hitting an outcast in the face in front of his girl? Go for it! You're actually doing her a favour by demonstrating in a short sharp lesson the consequences of getting involved in illegal organisations. Her boyfriend new the score when he joined the Outcasts, but that didn't stop him. Maybe a takedown in front of his girl will show him that he can't rule the roost with his fists, so go get a proper job and take care of her. She'll learn very quickly that crime doesn't pay and so will join the ranks of the respected community. She could aspire to being a waitress in a burger joint, or telemarketer.

Yeah and Superman really is a %&$@

I wouldn't worry about the little old lady, I mean have you EVER seen one let go of their bag and the bad guy run off down the street?

Of course you haven't, cos that little old lady is a hero in diguise! How else could she me hanging on with a huge bloke trying to nick her bag.

If you just take a few minutes to stop and watch he NEVER gets away with it, she just won't let go. My guess is eventually the bad guys give up and go off to find some unlikely scheme to do instead.

Try it as an AR/* blaster with Sniper Rifle in Atlas Park. Just pick your spot on a roof with a good view of some mugging spawns and pick off the muggers one by one.

It's the way newbies just pause in shock after seeing a nearby mob go flyings for no visible reason.

Morally ambiguous? Sure. Still mildly entertaining though.

Posted

Or drive-by Wormholing enemies from roofs.

Although I stopped doing that when I started to consider the shock it'd give lowbies in the zone when it started raining (purpling conning) men.

Is using a IO'd up energy torrent on level one mobs, for fun considered being not so super?

Only about as much as using my KB slotted Power Thrust for sending rooftop dwelling Hellions to the other side of Atlas.

If people saw how much I giggle while doing it though, it might be considered evil.

At least us villians are more honest about what WE are and what we care about. Time you heroes consider the fact that you are not much better then us.

Consdiering my zombies tend to dismember and eat anyone conning grey on rooftops (as does my Necromancer) those wormholed by my hero are getting off lightly with just a violent teleporting followed by a multi-storey plummet to the ground. It beats being eaten alive.

I think slicing up villians with an energy sword isn't exactly comic friendly heroics, have always had my mains on a shade of grey rather than outright hero's.
