The feeling when a new life takes its first breath is one that will never leave a father's mind. The world stands still, you forget to breathe, and until you hear the first cry there is an expectant almost-panic. But the joy of that moment removes all tiredness, all pain vanishes to leave peace.
And then the fun begins. You get the early morning feeds, the nappies, the contact while of the washing machine. your kitchen smells constantly of either sterilising fluid or steam. You wonder if you'll ever have clean clothes that last more than the next feed and burping. You sit awake for five hours, dawn approaching, with screaming baby in arms who seems to refuse to sleep. Your patience will be tested more often and harder than any complaining forumite could ever test you. You worry over them, spend too-much money on them, and even get mad at them sometimes. You ask yourself if it's worth it, tell yourself that it must be.
It is. It always will be.
Congratulations BAB, and to your wife. May your son take you places you never knew existed, even as you do the same for him.
