Aggressive players.

Hi, I've just come home from one of the worst days in my History book, so I'm going to keep this post somewhat short and to the point.

I haven't played COX for some months now, I've come back as I've wanted to play again (And I need a more casual game beacause I'm at collage in september) one of the things I've noticed since I've come back is how Aggressively angry some players are.

I've been in several "Debates" with other people, in task forces, in chats and teams.

Before, this happend only once or twice, Now my global ignore has over 23 people on it, in 5 days.

So my question is this: In the last 7 or so months, have players gotten more "Aggressive"

Posted

i think it's not the aggressive nature of the players, it's just that more and more underages kids play these games.
ones had a 11 year old kid, calling ppl noob only because he didn't got his way.....

That's really just a common insult with people that don't have a valid argument and the brain cells of a Donkey.

You would be surprised how many people actually fit that criteria. Fortunately, many don't last too long in the game and this sort of thing tends to peter off past the 20's...

@FloatingFatMan

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Hey Fatman, I've actually called a few people some "noobs" in the past month.

Not as an insult, but actually asking if they are "noobs" to this map (Warcraft 3) so I could explain to them.

But I still see alot of people 20+ who still say it, and can't type "u" "lik" etc, and something that REALLLLLLLLLLLY grinds my gears is when they type "lol" for no reason, I think I die a little inside when I see someone typing it.

But back on-topic anyway.

Think you got the words noob and newbie confused...
Noob=Rude and usually refuse to learn.
Newbie=New... Thats all.
So trying to explain to a "noob" how a map works... Wont work.
=you should have asked if they were "newbie" to the map.

Twist it, reshape it, repaint it etc etc... calling someone noob is always rude.
Unless ofcourse it is between friends that throw insults at eachother 24/7 trying to outwit the other with something new.

(am I being rude now by correcting the difference between the words?)

Origin :
The word newbie is a variant of 'new boy' and comes from British public school and military slang. Its earliest known usage on the Internet may have been on the USENET newsgroup talk.bizarre[1].

Before it entered popular discourse by way of the Internet, the term "newbie" had a limited usage among U.S. troops in the Vietnam War as a slang term for a new man in a unit.[2]

Alternative Spellings :

"Newbie" can be used as a term to identify newcomers to a game, place, or organization. The variant spellings of "newbie" are also used, especially in online games, as a catch-all insult regardless of the recipient's actual skill or experience. Someone who acts like a "newbie," but isn't one would be referred to as one of the variant spellings.[citation needed] The variant "noob" has become common in spoken English in parts of New York City and New Jersey as a substitute for the word dude.[citation needed][original research?] Alternative spellings include "newb," "n00b," "N00B," "noob," and "nub."[citation needed] These alternative spellings of the term, other than "newb," inherit the definition of "newbie" but are generally used in a derogatory manner to indicate uselessness because of the ignorance associated with being a newcomer.[citation needed]

In online gaming, a greater distinction may be made between a "newb" and a "noob."[citation needed] The common consensus[specify] is that a "newb" is someone who through their very nature of being a new player is inexperienced and naïve to particular gaming mechanics or etiquette, whereas a "noob" is a player that is generally considered to be experienced, yet often makes mistakes or solecisms that would more likely be attributed to a "newb."[citation needed] The term "noob" can also be applied to someone who is experienced, but blatantly disregards rules and etiquette through personal choice; however, the label "troll" would be more accurate.

There are a multitude of words that have emerged from the original "Newbie", each with their own meaning and origins.[citation needed] There are such terms like "nubcakes" or "nubotron" which emerged from generally gamers expressing their anger of success with their fellow players.[citation needed] The general rule is to use the nub- or noob- stems in order to create specific insults or expletives, as in "nooblet," or "nubcracker."[citation needed]

The Korean term chobo (초&#48372 has roughly the same connotations as "newbie", and has been popularized in the English speaking world via the presence of large numbers of South Koreans in some online gaming communities. The antonym of chobo is gosu (고&#49688.

Hey Bunny.

I think a lot of what you saw if you're refering to the Statesman Taskforce (which both myself and you were on) came about through the stress of that last mission, everyone was highly strung because the fight with Recluse wasn't going so well and our level 50 Invuln tank decided to bugger off.

It took us, what, 10 tries to finally beat him, having a 48 Invuln tank for Recluse was kinda tough as well but once the Taskforce was over everybody noticeably relaxed and left on fairly good terms.

Think the main source of frustration was having to deal with the Arachnos Flier before EVERY attempt (that thing really should die and stay dead!) but we did it in the end, thankfully.

So that explains some of the stress that you encountered.

Edit: And you're not being rude, I've always thought that the difference between the phrase Newbie and N00b was just that.

I think it's fairly widely excepted that Newb = new to the game but with time and explanation will become a great player and N00b = someone who thinks they're right, doesn't care to improve and general has no social graces whatsoever.

Now where's the Ctrl+Alt+Delete comic that has the same explanation.

2nd Edit: There we go...found it

Thanks for clearing that up Chatarsis, I was using the word wrong then!

Hey Dr_Mechano, I'm not reffering to the STF at all (Even though it was some-what fustrating) I'm reffering to an ITF I did last night were I was called all sorts of things and I was being talked about behind my back by every member of the group on Skype, I attempted to tell our SS/WP tank not to use rage while Tanking and go abuse, I also attempted to give the Empath in our team abit of friendly advice aswell, that was a no go to.

I can't say that I've seen any more 'aggresive' behaviour recently; the only time I ever use ignore these days is after the third blind team invite, as I really don't want to keep clicking no to somebody who won't take it for an answer Maybe you have just been unlucky.

Considering he was the only tank we had (He was also a brute) and was Willpower, rage is giving him a -20% debuff to defense, I was on my SS/INV Brute, but I was only level 47 and I didn't stand much of a chance

I was thinking that whats wrong with rage while tanking the only thing i can think of is that the OP missed the change to rage that means it no longer causes -Def when it drops.

It says on the skill it does, so I'm going by what the skill says.

ah well they changed it it now Nerf your damage but no longer has that nasty only affecting self bit so its not a instadeath sentence for the unwary invul/willpower tank

That's handy to know, but strange.

I went full tank spec as a brute a few days ago, Tough + Weave etc, the lot really.

Each time I hit "Rage" I actually took more damage, I ofcourse didn't really test it but it did seem like they hit more when I put rage up.

i have a ss/invul brute as well cant say I've noticed that but i do tend towards the kill them first approach

if your interested the relevant patch notes can be found here
http://uk.cityofheroes.com/game-guide/game-patches/3130

the relevant bit is

Super Strength Rage no longer has an Only Affect Self period. Instead, it is given a huge damage reduction coupled with the inability to use Temporary Powers for 10 seconds as its ‘crash’ effect. Be careful if using Rage while wearing a disguise, such as a Freakshow Disguise or the Holographic Projector, as this crash will disable those effects!

Usually telling other players what to do and what not to do is a tricky subject and should be labelled as "Handle with care" which on prior experiences teaming with you I think it is not the case. If I had 7 team mates talking behind my back on Skype would make me consider that I might be the one doing something wrong instead of getting to the point "everyone is wrong except me" tbh.

Oh and welcome back.-

It wasn't so much they were "Talking behind my back" it's just every move I made or didn't make they talked about it on Skype.

Wait, I think I just said the dumbest thing all year.

Hey bunny - sounds like missing the group invite for your ITF the other night (with Viking Furnace) was a blessing in disguise!

I know exactly what you mean though - seems more and more people forget that we're playing a GAME. I've taken to playing solo or teaming with my SG; PuGs are just an exercise in frustration.

I can say I have seen aggressive players in-game - the main problem with these people is just that they can't accept the truth. If you tell them what a power can do, they may whine and grooan and spam "You're wrong" all over the team chat.

Aggressive players need a bit of common sense, and need to calm down.

Some people dishing out the advice/orders on how to play other peoples chars need to calm down a bit at times too
