NVidia Graphics Cards 8-series...
*puppy dog eyes*
But my 8800 Ultra is the best card I've ever bought....
*whimpers*
And it'll be out of warranty in about 5 months now. Oh well, hopefully it'll last until the 10 series comes out.

There is some good news! It seems that the 8800 does NOT use the G84 and G86 parts. You may be safe.

yeah, the 8800 uses the G92, is the crappy horrible go's and 8600 that are at risk.
Ah... Phew!! That's quite a relief!

Is this relative to our little random crash/freeze screen nv4_disp problem already posted in another thread? Btw, I also got GeForce 8800 GT.

Nope, your 8800 uses the G92 chipset
As Cass says: the 8800 series is not affected by this news, as it does not use the same parts as the older 8-series cards.
I'll say that again: anyone worried about their spanking new 8800 NVidia graphics card is NOT affected.

Awww, nuts...
But also, could someone give me a clue as to what exactly they're saying is wrong with these? I've read the article twice and still cant quite get at what they're saying.
Shame all the Russian hackers using their nVidia gfx cards to crack codes will be experiencing failures.
Meanwhile, I shall continue to use my 7 series cards

Basically, they'll start to suffer more and more from overheating problems, even at normal idle. nVidia are making a "patch" available to run your GPU fan at full speed all the time to help with the cooling, but that's going to increase power use and noise.

also, because of how desktops run, if you jsut shut off the monitor when you leave the computer alone, there won't be so much of the cooling off and warming up due to stoping and starting, even with the once a day on and off's, it seems like you will still get a year or more out of the board, and at £40 for a new 8600, you won't be terribly out of pocket.

True, however, in this case they are correct:

This fault mainly effects laptops, it will in theory effect graphics cards (8300GS to 8600GTS) but to a lesser extent.
Not just because PC's have fewer on/off cycles but also because of the better cooling you get on graphics cards compaired to laptops.
The original 8800gts gtx and ultra are fine (g80 chip) as are the new 8800gts 512mb, 8800GT and 8800GS (g92 chip)
If you had a gaming laptop, well opps, you're up poop creak and that's your paddle floating away.
if you bought a 8300-8600gt for gaming, why did you bother? they are pritty pants to start with.
thnx for the warning, i found a very good gaming notebook with a 8600gt in it.
but after this, i'll rather trade the 200MHz from the dual core 2200MHz for the 9200.
Quickly adding...
Firstly, i always thought that the Inquirer was some kind of pulp, not to be taken serious. This is the first i've heard of it.
Second, i have a 8600GT. My PC has been running for almost a year, constantly, and i've been gaming heavily on it daily (CoH at max settings, Crysis, the lot). And i have yet to see any change whatsoever in the quality, framerate or whatever else. Maybe it's the brand i'm using (Point of View), but i'm pretty sure that this is just a load of drivel.
I've been running 2 8800GT's in SLI mode (2x512mb) for ages now - and not had any heat issues. (famous last words)
I did however manage to blow up my previous 2 cards (6800 ultra's 2x256mb) - but that was because i used the air duster at slightly the wrong angle and it left that dodgy residue on the chips on my motherboard.. turned it all on, fzzzzt! dodgy smell - motherboard, graphics cards, processor, power supply and memory all shot in one go. <sigh>
I replaced everything but the graphics cards for £205 - then bought the 2 new 8800 GT's fairly cheaply. I'm loving the newer syatem, and not had any issues for about 6 months, since i purchased it all.
there is no heat issue for the old GTSes/Ultras or the new GT/GTSes, it's the sub 8800 cards that are in danger of having issues, specially in laptops were they change state a lot (get hot cool off, get hot cool off)
Read the damn posts.
havent had any problems yet on my home PC, seems like a laptop issue, considering you can pick up a very good cheap card nowdays (rather than pay through thr nose for the GTX version)
btw i have sli 8800GT 580M, bought 8 months ago...i really want to upgrade to a 9800gx2 but my when you look at the actual figures i would be paying out for such a little improvement in real non anal terms its not worth it.
i would never go SLI again tbh the increase in performance just wasnt worth it 5-15FPS when the games already running at 50+ just isnt worth the extra cost, im old, i cant keep up as it is
You could consider a single Ati 4870X2 when it comes out. Essentially 2 cards on a single board but quite expensive. Should be quite a bit faster than your 8800GT Sli setup. Although unless you're running a huge res on a big monitor I find my single 8800GT works just fine on any game @1680x1050, Bar Crysis of course but even then that doesn't look too bad!
Defiant 50's

@Miss Chief
Crysis runs smooth as anything on my rig (E8400, 8800GT), never have understood why people say it's a total beast... Mind you, my monitor will only do 1440x900...

Take a read of THIS little gem. Not sure how much of this is scare-mongering, but it seems fairly damning.
