Soloing

I'm currently playing a Mastermind solo, and i'm breezing through EBs and AVs like the wind. But i want to play Heroside too, but i just can't figure out what would be good for someone who likes to level solo. I've tried a Claws/Regen Scrapper, but i seem to die almost every time i do a Safeguard. Do i just suck at being a Scrapper, or is there better soloers?

tanks generally dont die solo but can take along time and you wont be killing many EBs let alone AVs

you might wanna try invun scrapper with BS or katana

Broadsword, katana, spines and martial arts all work well soloing with regen. I've gotten katana and spines to high level and broadsword to martial arts fairly high but then got bored lol. Trollers are good solo but no until higher levels. Blasters can solo pretty well too

From personal experience, soloing a Claws/Regen is easy, but doesn't become extremely easy, until you get Focus. Recommend taking fly pool for Air superiority too. As you can knock them down, then knock them back, rinse repeat. But compared to a MM, you have to do the work yourself, you can't sit back and do nothing... .

Also easy to solo a Tank, in fact least likely to die doing this, but most builds will eat your end fast pre lvl 20, so you will need to rest a lot, or get the best DO/SO/IOs available at the earliest opportunity.

Infact it's pretty easy to solo with any AT, it just means that you have to adapt your playstyle and tactics accordingly. I've found Fenders to be the hardest to solo, but still possible.

My DB/regen is probably the easiest solo I've ever played, with debuffs and a whole load of knockdown in the combos,it's very much like playing the game with easy mode on

Thanks for all of your replies, i'll try some of those chars out. Would any of you care to post your builds? I stink at doing my own, so it would be nice if i could see some examples.

Many forget that /regen isnt really 'regenish' untill you get to lvl 16 and onwards to finaly slot it with SO's.

Ma and Claw are pretty endurance friendly, so u can take a look at the /fire (new set).

If you look more for EB/AV killers, you might have to start looking Controllers (/rad, /kin or maybe /thermal) or even defenders. They have quite similair abilities as MM's have (secondairy side) and if you pick illusion or fire you even get a few pets.

Tankers are pretty tough, but often have to little damage output to take down a AV, EB is possible but quite depending on the set you play.

As a Controller player by temperament Scrappers always feel very squishy to me

If you don't mind killing stuff a lot lot slower than a Scrapper then do give a Controller a try even solo, Ill/Rad is reckoned to be the AV killing combination and a good soloer (take Deceive). Anything */Storm is fun and should also be soloable (for patient controllery values of soloable) just like */Rad. Plant/Storm should be good, tho' I haven't played it myself yet. If you're playing a Controller solo do take your single target immobolise, if you have one, and slot it as a ranged attack. You might well also want Air Superiority if you don't have a veteran attack (if you do take Sands of Mu not the Ax).

If you want to stick with Scrappers I'd give Broadsword/* or Katana/* a go since they give you an attack which adds to your melee defense, or DM/* since it debuffs your enemies ToHit and has an attack that also heals. */Willpower is a more well-rounded secondary than Regen if that's not working for you, or you could go to the other extreme from Regen (all regen and heal) and take SR (all Defense).

Willpower/EM is a fun solo tank for the less than 20 levels I've played it.

For a solo defender, Rad/*, Storm/*, Dark/*, possibly TA/* and -- even tho' I personally don't get on with the set -- /Kin are your top picks for a primary. */Dark, */Ice, */Sonic, */Rad and possibly */Archery for the secondary. I believe Defenders are usually reckoned to be the toughest AT to solo with blueside.

I can't get blasters beyond level 6 just simply on the playstyle, so for them I have no idea frankly.

I can only say one thing about soloing on Hero-side. Try many ATs and decide which one you can solo.

I like soloable heroes, not that i like soloing much but you know all comic heroes can hold themself against a bunch of punks alone.

I find Mind controllers, Willpower tankers and i think Inv scrappers (yeah my regens died quickly in the past so i am keeping my current one for teaming) soloable for myself. Other people can solo with other ATs and sets but those are the ones fits in my play style and pace.

Defenders can solo too but finishing a mission with them takes too much time so even i like them much i never go into that scene again.

So far my best soloing hero is my WP/Stone tank (my Mind trollers are close but at least i know a mish where my main can't take down an EB) even with his endurance issues. If you go for more end light set you will do good.

When my scrapper got Practiced brawler (super reflexes) he became almost unstopable (auto cast with recharge IO's), and when he got elude, he turley became immortal, taking on EB's with little trouble (though i've never tried soloing AV's)

trouble is all those toggle defences means early game you'll only be able to fight short battles and need to rest often due to END drain, which is solved be getting Endurance from the fitness power pool and plently of END SO/IO's

Illusion / Radiation controller.

Hands down, this is the strongest solo character I have played and it all comes down to Phantom Army. On small groups they're great, scale the group size up a bit and they become less effective though. So don't go looking for an AoE character here.

For single targets though, like the EBs you find in the Faultline Arcs, or the Shivan Destroyer in the introduction to Ouroboros, not a problem. It may be just me, but I felt really strong with this combo when I was soloing Rikti A Bombs. He's also now about level 33, so it's not an end game thing. He's also the first character that's actually made me push my limits to see what I could take on.

It maybe a bit too close to the MM thing for you though, but without the pet control and more mob debuffing/control.

I've played a storm defender up to 35 and at the moment wouldn't recommend a defender solo.

However, like everything ymmv. Try out different characters, see what fits your playstyle, have fun.

Cheers,

Mike.

My Claw/Willpower Scrapper had very few deaths in his 50 levels of mostly soloing on Unyielding (more xp/challenge than Invincible I find, as spawns are larger) - he could herd up 3 spawns and AE them down in relative safety and I can't remember struggling with any EBs, though I didn't take on any AVs. It seemed a powerful combo. Spines primary would probably have made him kill spawns faster, but I don't think single target damage would have been as good for EBs.

My main problem with /Regen is that it is very heavy on click-powers, and click powers force redraw if you have a weapon-based primary and also use up time when you could have been attacking, which can be annoying - so MA/, Fire/, Dark/, etc. would be less annoying for me with /Regen than BS/, Kat/ or DB/ would - a more passive/toggle-heavy secondary like /WP or /SR suits weapon sets better, I find.

I like Blasters too - they kill faster than scrappers, but can die more often too and may struggle with certain EBs - but you could take a controllery secondary (Ice or Mental) with a high damage but still controllery primary that isn't resisted often (Ice or Sonic) to make a Blaster that is more survivable solo (though my Ice/Ice does have end issues at L20 even with Stamina - I always find Ice Blast bad for that).

I hear the best combination for taking down AVs - and even GMs - is an Illusion/Rad Controller, but I'd expect soloing to be slow compared to a scrapper/blaster until you have all your pet powers (L32).

I may not be the best person to ask, though - I much prefer redside for soloing than blueside.

Being able to solo isn't that point, being able to solo effectively is the point.

I have largely soloed a blaster, a scrapper and a controller. Plus hordes of lesser alts who have yet to achieve greatness.

I don't much enjoy tanks as they really need something to do their damage though they are nigh unkillable. Of course at higher levels once they have taken their extra attacks they might be great... don't know my highest so far is 12.

Defenders are more fun in teams but it is perfectly possible to create an Offender, or with Dark/ to make something that is almost a controller.

My scrapper is DM/Regen, started not long before i4 so did experience Instant Healing as a toggle, uber , she could solo EBs though they were less prevelant in those days, the first I faced was Heracles the warrior EB in Striga, I wouldn't say the fight was easy but I did solo it. AVs not a chance now but I did solo several of the GMs before their code was changed, I almost soloed Lusca...

My controller was boring and slow until it got imps but rather amazing from then on, one or two mobs give her pause (Carnies mainly) and she can churn though groups that even my scrapper would struggle with, it is more of an involved playstyle as you are squishier thus need to be careful where you and those agro magnet imps are. (Fire/Kin BTW)

My blaster I can't speak of before 35 as I have no reccolection as to how I got her there , however after 35 she was insanely fun to level mainly solo. Nrg/Dev may not seem the ideal combination but I found very little I couldn't achieve with some forethough and occasionally practice... especially with the newest version of defiance which allows you to attack even when mezzed.

Of all the characters I have played to this point I think my scrapper was the easiest to just solo, she didn't need any help with anything upto the end game though now with the nerfs to Regen since I created her she isn't as powerful. Controller can solo very well but when it goes wrong, and it will, their much smaller HP pool means they die much much quicker.

To this point I have played a hero of each non-epic AT to at least 44 apart from a tank which as mention only to 12...

Just to add what others have said, it's probably just as much down to your playstyle. I pretty much took Robotank all the way to 50 primarily on solo stuff. Sure, I took part in the occasional PuG, but most of the XP was earnt solo.

As Inv / Eng Tank, Robo had an advantage in the early levels - a lot of Auto powers to choose from - which helped save Endurance for the attacks. On which subject, yep tanks might not hit as hard as other ATs, but once I'd picked up the level 35 & 38 powers, there wasn't much I couldn't take on. Energy Transfer just rocks.

Just thought I'd offer a Tanker point of view. I'll go back to my corner now

Yeah, I can vouch for that, after level 35 and energy melee tank can solo very effectively. It can be a bit of a slog to get there though.

I really should do something about this signature.

I found fire/fire tanker pretty easy to lvl. Solo or in teams. Tbh at some points i didnt care either way because it just felt like driving a steamroller. Only difference was that a team would speed it up a bit.
Herd>kill>repeat.

A bit of a struggle up to 25 but from then on it is pretty easy.

I have tried a few toons both red and blue side and none of the combos I've tried has been able to solo AVs like the wind (or even at all). I tend to pick rather uncommon combos tho... An educated guess on blue side AV soloer I would also say Ill/rad troller based on what I've read on the forums.

I've done a lot of soloing with my storm/elec defender, he can't blast as effectively as a blaster, but he's till pretty effective imo. Despite reading over and over on these forums that the end drain of elec is a waste of time, I slotted all the attacks with one endmod, and minions and lieutenants run out of end before they die - with small groups using a few AoEs can stop them fighting back fairly effectively. Bosses are harder - sometimes the end drain works sometimes not, EBs and AVs are a waste of time trying - just have to use as much storm power as possible to debuff them (which usually works).

And when you stop soloing and join a team for a change of pace, you can completely forget about end usage - I can fire off powers with complete disregard to end use and still keep a full end bar

I think the emphasised statements above sums up defender's electric blast for me really well.

My storm/elec is at 35 (iirc) and I've personally found the damage to be weak. I could solo Snaptooth in the winter missions in almost perfect safety. Hurricane meant he wasn't landing hits, and the end drain meant he didn't have the energy to try too often, but it took forever to actually take him down. I used to really enjoy playing these sets, but not so much recently.

At the moment I wouldn't recommend storm/electric, but then maybe it's just the choices I made.

YoghurtMan, I'd love to see what elec powers you took and slotted, any chance of post/pm?

Cheers,

Mike.

Being a non-vet I wouldn't know much about what classes are best to solo with. But I will say that with my IO-slotted lv30 Spine/ Dark Armor Scrapper solos pretty well.

I play on inv mode all the time and the scrapper works well. When he's low on health I'd just run into a bunch of mobs and immediately hit Dark Regen.

In all honesty, it really is best to try a bunch of classes and see which you work best with. In my opinion any class has the potential to solo with (and sometimes without) IO sets. In the end it really goes down to what character you play better.

Pick a char you'd like to play else you'd die of boredom =p

For safest soloing you would be looking at the tanks or a Mind controller but these are likely to be fairly slow.

Fire tank, Fire/Kin controller or Ill/Rad tend to be the most popular for solo builds.

Personally I like my Will/Ice tank - dropping all the EBs in the Faultline arcs with brawl just had to be done after the first one dropped to it - and my Grav/Sonic controllers - lots of single target damage and a pet that can soak damage and keep the mobs either held or flying back away from you, cave mishes can actually be fun with this. Only tried one AV and got him to below half health before end issues got in the way so it may be feasible.

Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant

Wow, there sure seems to be a lot of power combinations that solo AVs easily! I must be making the wrong choices...some of my toons have trouble with EBs... :-(

Do you need to IO your toons out to take on AVs? Use a lot of Temp powers like Shivans? Any tips would be appreciated.

Ill/Rad is not really lots of ATs

Stone/?? tanks in granite can probably solo many AVs in the sense that they won't die...

Some AVs my mind/rads can solo others I can't even mez let alone damage.
