Encouraging PvP - A Guide
[ QUOTE ]
I can say I want to play in the "new" players pool, then bring my fully IO'd PvP build to the match and well.. still put off new players . However I'd say 2-3 rounds, monitored by some "judge" ideally, will easily get rid of those kinks.

Or you could have if you hadn't made the fatal villanious mistake of monologuing about it on a public forum beforehand.
I'd be well up for this, I'd even happily transfer a toon to Union for it. Only problem I'd have would be that I tend to only be on from 20:30 onwards.
DRAT! foiled again...
And yeah, it'd only give me bragging rights of being the best among beginners, but thats not the point. Some ppl will do anything for easy kills, and thanks to them new players might be put off. After all, thats one of the biggest reasons people get put off PvP isnt it? The bragging, ganking, swearing etc.
As said, I dont think you'll need many fights to see if people are about evenly matched. I dont say everybody should show the same amount of skill, after all what use is a contest then? But you can easily see if people have certain understandings and skills etc. You dont need many fights to see that. So I dont think it'll be that much of a scheduling nightmare. If it is a small tourny you can for instance have 1 night the prelim, 1 night the tourny.
PS: I dont have a fully IO'd pvp toon

Are we talking about an event for solo/duels or are we talking about teams or small teams? Duels tend to favour builds more than skill.
dont think duels are a good way of pitting new players against each other, as they might not have the cookie cutter builds needed. Think the best way of introducing people to PvP is team PvP for several reasons:
1) as said, less dependent on builds
2) if they wanted to solo they might as well enter zones solo
3) team pvp tends to be more balanced and imo more fun
4) it might leave them with people they want to team with in PvP more often, hopefully adding some diversity to the zones

In team fights the gap between skilled/non-skilled and good build/bad build is even bigger imo...But since vets rarely play with bad builds its difficult to see. Personally Im not that interested about losing in numbers in excess of 50-0.
3vP was nice since it mixed the teams enough to not allow power-teams.
I think its true to some extent that a bad build is bad no matter what, and a good build will be better in the same hands. However I also think that a bad build can be good in the right hands, surpassing a good build in bad hands.
There are certain ways of spotting a good player, such as effective use of powers, constantly moving, keeping buffs up, working as a team, co-ordinating attacks (ganking) and knowing when to run and hide.
aye, a good player with a bad build will always be able to give a good build with a bad player a run for their money (unless ofcourse, said bad build is just of no use in pvp.. but those are only a few extreme cases)

I've come up with a "Event" which is bigger than anything i have done before will involve lots of planning and devising. It should in the theory give people of all PvP experience a chance to win. Will also include loads of matchs. I need to do some research first tho.
I would like as many of you to answer this as possible to get a true idea.
1:/ Would you object to a entrance fee? that you would later have chance to win at the end along with others entrance fee? A way of guarantying that people that register will show up?
2:/What time and nights are you on most?
3:/Would you mind the event going on for a few weeks?
4:/Union or Test?
1. I dont mind at all, as long as its reasonable
2. any day
3. I'd rather it not
4. Any is fine, union preferably
1:/ Would you object to a entrance fee? that you would later have chance to win at the end along with others entrance fee? A way of guarantying that people that register will show up?
I think this is a good idea, if you have paid to join something you are more likely to turn up so this is a good idea imo. I don't mind a fee personally.
2:/What time and nights are you on most?
Most nights
3:/Would you mind the event going on for a few weeks?
Nope
4:/Union or Test?
Preferably Union, but either would be ok!
Hope this helps.
Ditto

I wouldn't object so long as everyone had a chance of winning it.
2:/What time and nights are you on most?
Most nights after 7pm, more at weekends.
3:/Would you mind the event going on for a few weeks?
No
4:/Union or Test?
Either

how do you intend to collect entrance fee?
1:/ Would you object to a entrance fee? that you would later have chance to win at the end along with others entrance fee? A way of guarantying that people that register will show up? Well... it depends on how much, as long as its under.. say 5 million, sure.
2:/What time and nights are you on most? All time every night.
3:/Would you mind the event going on for a few weeks?
Of course not
4:/Union or Test?
Test... if possible, but I can level another Blaster

On the server. Depends on many different things with people being on defiant makes things a little complex. Atm im just gathering info just to see if people are generally put off by the idea.
The idea is to make sure that the people register will show up more than to add to the prize.

Prefer Test for more turnout, tho' say if the winner is on Defiant, getting the prize money to them will need to be organised beforehand.

I wouldn't mind but this will probably stop most new players from entering which should be encouraged in these events imo
2:/What time and nights are you on most?
Any time after 5pm-6pm is fine for me if i'm not busy with work or uni
3:/Would you mind the event going on for a few weeks?
Nope although events in the past that go beyond more than a few weeks usually loses peoples interest
4:/Union or Test?
eithers fine

Hi, i would like to thank Knight_Stalker for starting this poll. I am an experienced PVE player on COV for close to 2 years now and have dabbled in PVP.
I think the idea of a regular event is brilliant especially if teams are mixed up I think this will help unexperienced PVP'ers like myself, enabling them to mix with more experienced players and get some tips etc on builds and playstyle
Bit hard to ask tips from sumone attacking you in zone lol even tho i have done it and been surprised by the replies
I'm my time wandering PVP zones trying not to die too much lol i have noticed a good mix of peeps really. There are always a few rotten apples in the barrel, but i have never really been put off returning to the zones
I personally would be up for joining in with any events and im sure quite a few from my SG would too. As long as the emphasis was on "fun"
Take it easy peeps

One way of encouraging PvP is to remember to take your toon out of hide when going into WB, RV, SC, BB. I like many people immediately do /whoall when entering a pvp zone to see if its worth my while even being there. If no names appear ill just leave again. Also if im on a hero and there are 7 more in the zone and only one villain i tend to leave, purely because the odds are a little unfair and ill also be competing with 7 others to get a kill.
Yeah, but, if you hide people don't know that you are in the zone..!!

. Anyway, just thinking of ways to keep it simple, having preliminary rounds will make it a scheduling nightmare.
