Why start a new SG/VG?

...when you can just join an existing, established one and get the benefits that much earlier?
Are Role/ranks really important?
There a chances there a themed/same ideas Group out there

i know for me i belong to 4 group, 2 hero and 2 villian. my reason are i have my main Villain base that i run, i joined my wife Hero base to help her out on her base and other stuff.

my 2nd villains is for 2 reason one i wanted to make a tech base, but also to store up my salavge from thieves from my main

and finallly my 2nd hero base is on union and i don't want to worry about being kick out of SG due to low inactive.

the reason im asking people about this, is the fact that there new sg around lvl 10 normal either doing ramdom invites or pm to ask people to leave there Sg/Vg to join there new one.
But what is the motivation to start an SG/VG when they tons already out there?

i just wanting people opions on the subject nothing else.

Well I have just started my own SG on union and got one of the Forumites to help me move all my alts into it.

All of them WERE in an exisiting SG with a great, well equipped TECH style base which had everything one could need. So, why did I leave that SG to start my own? Basically for background story and RP reasons.

All of my alts have detailed bios and back stories. Four of them in particular are all supposed to be part of the same team. I just felt that they should have a base of their own to fit with their concept and so have decided to make it.

I have no intention any time soon of recruiting other players so the baseis going to advance VERY slowly but that does not bother me. If I wanted all the functionality I would have stayed in the old SG. I just want my heroes to have a place or even a base they can call their own.

Because I like having an SG consisting entirely of my own characters, especially since the rent reforms

As stated above, I too have set up my own SG for my toons on defiant...not too bothered about zone teleports, especially now that the green line has been extended. My main reson is that I can construct a base to suit my needs and also to have a safe haven to store my salvage/insps/enhancements. Totally selfish, but what the hey!

I am sure there are still quite a number of reasons. One which has not been mentioned is the satisfaction gained from it (doing well). I remember when my supergroup was just like 100's out there. However, for what ever reason we started to do well and the feel good factor was great. Everyone was working to the same goal to make the supergroup as good as possible and it really made the game enjoyable. Getting a few people with a like minded view/goal and forming a supergroup can be fantastic.

I think the problem most people encounter is they don't expect it to be as hard as it can be. You really do need to put the time in if you are to have a good chance of achieving what you want. I think people need to ask themselves this question before they set up a new supergroup especially like mentioned there are 100's of existing supergroups out there.

I think most of the time the reason for setting up a supergroup is personal. Reasons can vary between making one to house a small group of friends, themed group or created because you fancy a challenge to make it into the big time.

I guess you could ask why do anything, at all, ever? Different things are important to different people, if role-play is important to you you’d join a role-play SG weather it’s new or established, if having medical facilities and other amenities are important to you then you join an exiting SG that’s been around long enough to get those things…

Personally I like the idea of having a big base, fully loaded but when you start a new SG you just have to work towards that, weather you just started playing the game or been playing it for 2 years. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with starting something new up even though there’s already things like it. I mean do you think film makers stop making movies because there are already movies out? Do you think record labels stop looking for new artists because there are already artists out, artists who have been around for years? No, so I say to anyone who’s starting up a new SG or similar in any other game that’s been around for sometime already to just throw caution to the wind and go for it!

I started an SG about a year ago (a year into play at that time), just to see what it was about. I invited a few people but at that time I didn't have CoV so couldn't build a base, so people lost interest till there was only me, one alt, and someone who I haven't seen in game since he joined

But just recently, what with I9, I decided to explore the SG/Base side of things more. I found I had loads of base salvage I'd collected so I thought why not just see if I can build a base?

So I did, and I have to say it's tremendous fun! I'm really enjoying the idea, and now I'm starting to plan how to invite people. First I'm going to get all my free alts into my SG, then I'm going to get some good trusted friends in, then start playing in low level teams to see who are good newbie players, and invite them. I've got a telporter and have a beacon for Peregrine, and I've decided that a beacon for the Hollows would be attractive for new players, so I've put one in for that too.

So for me, it's been great exploring this area of the game that I hadn't really thought about much in the 2 years I've been playing.

This game has a lot to offer. I've been totally entranced by the combat and banter for years, but I9 has revitalised my interest, and also made me interested in all the other nooks and crannies of the game too!

So my answer is: for the fun of it!

I have single player SG, because I want my own base. I have no other interest or use any other SG related stuff. If I would be able have my own appartment to decorate with teleport and hospital functions, then I would not need base at all.

Because it's fun. I love coming up with names and concepts for SGs, I also like to build bases... To BUILD the base
it's part of the fun as much as it is to USE it. For me, at least.
My main toon entered a pre-existing SG a long time ago, while most of my alts are in another that I have started by myself later on, taking up new player after new player on the way.
The 2 SGs are coalized.
Result? I always use the TPs of the base of the SG I've made, whenever possible, also when I play with my main, despite being the base of its SG a lot bigger and more equipped. Because I love to use the base I created and put a lot of efforts in.

I am not enthralled by the SG bases etc i think people should have a personal room that they get into using a lift and have more personal items such as their own enhancement/insp racks that no one else can access. The fact that things arent global aint good neither as the whole kick and invite system is conceptually amiss and a pain in the butt.

Many people are trying to write their own comic so to speak and prefer atleast some greater independence and personal item security. Being in a large SG doesnt always allow for that, more personal space with personal items would help....oh and id still want to see apartments.

Now, thanks to a very helpful fellow forumite, I have all of my alts in my own private little SG. Its purely being done as a RP/concept thing and as I slowly level up my alts I will be expanding the base to match.

This being the case, I have no plans to invite others into the group anytime soon and so it effectively IS my own little "Bat Cave" with my own private storage space for my alts which no-one else can touch.

It may seem selfish to some but the way I look at it is, once I have built most of my alts up to 50 or at least the mid 40s, which will take a LOONG time, I will open it out to other new players who can benefit early from a totally tricked out base.

I admit that a small base like this is not quite the "apartment" that you are after but it shows that it is possible in game to at least have your own "space". Also, I am finding it very satisfying to create the base, get the look and feel right etc.

Finally, I am finding it fun to have some new goals for my main character, as well as looking for the next level, by planning out my base slowly I am also building toward my next presige target in order to add the next bit to the base.

I should just add to my post above on this. Now is a great time to invite people to your little SG if you have your own self-made small one (with all your alts in it) like I have. There are loads of new players wandering around, all you have to do is roll a new character, discretely find out who in the low level teams you are teaming with are new players, generally make yourself useful by answering their newbie questions in team chat and in private, and if they seem like good players or good fun people, chat with them for a bit and discreetly invite them to your SG in private, give them a bit of loving care and attention (show them the base, teleporters, medical facilities, etc.) explain to them about staying in SG mode, SG cozzie, etc., and give them permission to invite new people (but explain to them not to do it randomly, not to annoy people in team chat with it, etc.)

I got 5 new ppl in my SG last night this way, all nice folks, 3 I invited directly, and another 2 invited by one of the people I invited. It's great fun. And it got me the 15 people bonus pretty quickly so I could at last get an Energy room and enough energy to run both teleporters

Next, a control room and a mainframe, and then I will be able to ditch the oversight room and startup generator/control combo, and have more teleporter rooms, and get a proper workshop. Woohoo!

Great lark!

A tip for beacons: (IMO obviously)

Atlas Park, Steel Canyon, Talos & Peregrine. Obviously adjust if all the players in the SG are sub level 30 but if you have a spread from 50 down this works well. Can be achieved in small base with two teleports and only the basic support equipment.

I'd agree with this, and if you can stretch to 4 teleporters, it's nice to have some of the annoying to get to hazard zones in there too - e.g. Hollows and/or Perez for the newbies, Crey's Folly for the 30s folks, etc. (I found having a Hollows teleporter was a very attractive selling point when I was building up the initial numbers with newbies in my own SG )

The Kings Row teleporter plants you very close to the Yellow line, also a nice point.

My first two beacons were Kings Row and Steel Canyon for that very reason. With that one telepad you can get to pretty well anywhere with a maximum of 2 zone hops. Second teleporter has Faultline and Hollows; 3rd will have Talos and Peregrine, 4th Brickstown (because it brings you out right next door to the Creys Folly gate) and I'm undecided about the second beacon. Probably Atlas, but I think I'd be open to suggestion.

As to the original OPs question, "Why make a new SG?" Because you can! I started an SG on Union back in Feb / March time, and just had my Union alts and one or two RL friends. I tried recruiting new people, but found that they'd leave because "there wasn't enough people on line" (despite me explaining that it was a new and small SG *shrug*).

It's ended up with just my alts, and also those of my nephew (who started playing about a month ago). He's managed to convert a WoW playing buddy of his to the delights of CoH and he's brought a couple of his alts along as well.

So even though there's never more than 3 of us online at the same time, although the prestige gathering (and therefore base building) has been fairly slow, it's still been fun. As is often the case with anything related to MMOs (and indeed life for that matter); be patient. Don't expect instant gratification, the good stuff comes after you've had to wait a bit!

To give you an idea about what can be achieved with 3 people 20 or so alts between us and a couple of Double XP weekends, the Sigma Base has 2 fully functional teleporters, a large Generator, Database, Mainframe, Holodisplay Unit, Medibay with just the one Mediport, Workshop with a Salvage Rack, Inventions Station and Basic Worktable. All that is still on the smallest inital plot, so don't have to worry about rent.

Just another wee update for anybody checking this thread who might be interested in the subject of why form your own SG.

My SG now has 37 members spread across all levels (I'm the only 50 atm), all nice folks, good players. The base has 6 teleporters, medbay, workshops with lots of storage facilities including vault and invention table, insp and enh tables, all on the starting plot, and the members love the base because it's useful and It's laid out reasonably logically. We're now working towards upgrading to the smallest secure base. I built it fairly slowly, only inviting people who I thought were good players, or were witty chatters, etc. (always starting with a bit of private chat, getting to know them a bit, helping them out if they were new), and promoted people who seemed to be into the SG concept, including a Commander, so they keep it going when I'm alting on the other server.

So there you go, from one oversight room started in May to an ongoing proper SG in July. It's been great fun, met nice people, and have really enjoyed building the base - it's a whole other dimension to the game. And now I'm really looking forward to getting the base raid ready.

So yes, it's really worth it, and is quite possible to do from scratch even for a fairly casual player like me, if you build it so that it's useful to new members, stick with it and invite carefully!

Starting a SG is a great way to get more from the game, Esecially if you find a like minded group of people, at Last resort we have been around for a year and with regular TF teams and a lil organisation we all get more from the game than you do by playing "drop in" teams,

There is also a great sense of achivement waching your collective presite slowly being used to make an active base and crawling up the lines of SG to finally make it onto the top 100 list.

So basically yeah its great if your in for the long run and want more than a collection of 50's

I started up a new SG about 3 weeks ago to facilitate a couple of people from another forum who'd just started playing and a couple of us who were reactivating. There are currently no more 3 active members (not online at once, in total!) but with all our alts we've gotten the full amount of bonus prestige which has paid for a salvage rack, vault, invention table and workshop. Since we're all low level we can play in SG mode without penalty and we've currently no need for a med bay or teleporter so it does the job. I don't think I've ever actually teamed up with any of the other SG members just 'cause it's never suited - For me, the SG provides a channel for chatting to my online friends while using my friends list to keep track of people I've teamed with who I thought were decent team members and are worth looking up if I'm putting a team together. The base just saves me running back and forth from the Vault to the University invention tables. Since I don't really play often or for long enough to get involved in a proper SG, I don't feel I'm missing out on anything and besides, there's always Coalition!

Sometimes joining an existing supergroup can seem a little daunting, or just not work out.
I've joined several groups in the past which though thay had fantastic people in them, did not (at the time) offer the sense of support and unity that I wanted out of a SG.

Starting my own supergroups, let me recruit people I was teaming with at the time, creating a group of people of similar levels who played together.

Then whenever I recruited new people I would create a new alt and start from scratch, that way the new members dont feel like the are just prestige cows, and actually get to team with the super group.

Staring a new SG does give you the fun of making a new base, which allthough is limited can produce some nice looking bases (lets be honest they are useless..only use my personal base on defiant for storage..even took out the teleporters as I never used them).
