Solo base/lair
If you want to build bases only, buy The Sims. The base content is additional and designed for the Multiplayer aspect of the game. I suggest either joining an established SG or creating and recruiting your own.

Right, I want it known. That I want the option for a solo base or lair. I didn't buy CoV just so I can not get a decent functional base. The best I can do on my own in my little base, is make a decorative place to lay about.
I get to customize everything about my outfit and powers. But I'm powerless when it comes to a base. Since I either need to recruit 100+ people to make anything decent, or join an SG and hope they make the base at least a little bit decent.
Also, I'm going to keep hammering on this subject untill I get an official responce that this will be added. I do not pay 70 bucks for a game only to be dependant on others. And yes I understand this is an MMO, but I'd still like some control in this aspect.
[/ QUOTE ]
you can't have 100+ people in a SG.. max is 75
also you can't expect to be able to build a base on your own :s you could do it, but it would take almost 25 lvls worth o prestige to build it.

So reading is difficult these days?
Where did I suggest I only want to build bases. I just want a place to call my OWN which I can decorate as I want with some functionality.
There's a lot of PVE stuff you can add to your base for practical reasons. Like a ressurection ring, a telepad, and more. They can even add an 'intel' computer where you can look up info on local happenings. A nice handicap would be that you can't have Items of Power in your solobase, since they can't be large enough to sustain them.
I consider 'Multiplay' to be an aspect where I can team up on occasion with people and socialize. Not get forced into hanging out with people 'just' so I can enter a base I have no control over how it looks.
Your last point I'm just going to ignore. As I already pointed those out in my post.

Didn't even know the max was 75. This cap also generates serious 'alt' issues for larger SGs.
And yeah, I have my own private SG. So it'll take a while before I can get anything usefull in terms of a base.
During the CoV beta I read something on the US boards (which I check quite frequently) about plans for small hideouts/apartments (not SG dependent) in the "near" future.
The base building cost is something that annoys me as well, I don't want to join a large SG just to be able to have a base.

Well that's good news. I'll take a rumor over nothing anyday.
Let's just hope 'near future' is anytime soon. Like before the turn of the next century. :P

oh i am so with u on that, knowing our luck it will just be something like Apex's and War Witch's apartment for small teams who freqwently work together (as apex and war witch and horuse do)
Here's something you might like then:

I guess what your saying is that this game is becoming far too team oriented - which i kind of agree with... remember the CoH manual that said something along the lines of you could solo the game with a scrapper and experience all of its content? except of course when you meet AVs
a lot of rebalancing has been under the hat of 'to allow every archetype a valid role in a team' this 'team building' exercise has come at the expense of the solo element of the game i feel.

You know that would suit me fine. All I am really interested in is the decorative stuff. I like to play with base builders

I agree. Personal bases (or apartments) can improve rpg style.
on a fun note I think alts count towards your SG prestige bonus
But yeah... I'd like a lil private place I could invite friends over to; I prefer to keep my socialising loose rather than slapping a label on it, giving it a badge and parading it around under the name 'super group'. 'clan', 'guild' or whatever XD
I never did see the whole appeal of making a group of friends sound/look more like a military organisation
Where did the max players in a SG of 75 come from....last I looked my SG (Dreamfollowers) had 78 members

As confirmed above in the post where Positron is quoted, small 'apartments' or something similar for solo players and/or small SGs is being worked on.
In the meantime, though, it's perfectly possible for a solo player to have a base of their own, but it will take you time (and probably a lot of it) to earn the Prestige for 'functional' items like teleporters.
Bases, like Level 50 characters, are intended to be something that you earn through play, and have significant 'prestige' (in the sense of being impressive to other players and SGs, rather than the stuff you earn from defeating foes in SG mode) associated with them.
It is entirely possible that the Prestige costs for various base components will be fine-tuned over the coming months. However, I suspect that it will always require a significant amount of time and effort to earn a fully functional, raidable base - and a top of the line model with all the trimmings will take a very long time indeed.

I worked out that to have a base with the bare essentials to make use of any sort of salvage would cost 600k prestige. You get 20k from being in the group yourself. plus 20k for each member upto 15 (300k) so if you recuit 14 other people you are half way to getting a base that has any sort of functionality and you are no longer a solo player with there own base. I gained 200 prestige from completing a mission. So based on, and assuming a single person group, that I would need to complete 3000 missions to gain the prestige to make use of the salvage I have gained in those missions. (Yes I know I haven't taken into account the miniscule amount of prestige I can gain from a mission and street sweeping) However that been said I don't think that sg bases are something one person should be able to afford and run on there own.

I made a suggestion on the beta boards but I don't remember the reaction. Something to make the bases much more RP friendly and to allow a small supergroup to have somewhere to call home. Drop the price of all the decorative rooms by a lot. So intead of a pretty room costing 150,000 it would cost 15,000. After all they are just decorations. You can't put power, control, teleporters, guns, mines, shields, IoP bases, or anything other than pretty stuff in them. Why do they cost as much as a generator room? The pretty bits would actually help base raids too. Each doorway is a possible starting point for a raider. So more rooms means more doorways. It would be a huge boost to a RP group, if they had a supergroup of 10 people they could build a very fancy base to RP in and not be bombarded by people OOC.
By the way I am not a role player as such I do occasionally but not often. However I do like pretty things so they should be cheaper.

Bridger,
Have you seen Doctor Temporis' figures on the Union board regarding the costs of bases? According to his calculations, it will cost 910,000 prestige for a base with the bare minimum of functionality (ie. 1 worktable and the resources to power it).
Now I can appreciate that a "fully-functional, raidable base" should take a long time to set up, and that seems totally reasonable to me. But looking at these numbers and assuming they are correct (which they seem to be) I've estimated that it will take the supergroup I am part of over 2 months to achieve enough prestige just to build a base with the minimum bits and pieces, and that's if we don't want to earn any influence until further notice.
Vast Fortresses of Solitude with huge amounts of stuff in them should cost massive amounts and take ages to construct, that's logical. But a smaller SG who just want a smaller base with no interest in raids can't have one until into the new year? Seems a bit off to me.
I think one of the most anoying things about all this base building thus far is the salvage trade off. - I mean we earned the SG mission computer and Teleporter badges for SG mode, and we had the worktables and salvage to build the said items... After forking loads of prestige in building the new teleporter room we THEN had to fork out another 100k prestige to place the items that we built from salvage.. surely salvage should mean free, if we craft it why we need to pay for it? if thats the case why we even need to craft anything and just buy it from the items list in the first place!
Now we are totaly stuck. we have enough prestige to build all 3 worktables to build better items. but, cant use 3 worktables in the same room.. so, on that note I now need to make erm..I think its 300k prestige + another 600k Prestige and then 300k x (rooms I need) just to be able to place the 3rd worktable as there is not enough aux connections. Oh but I could use the secure room set IF I had 50 billion or so!.. jeez. We have lots of items ready to build but just cant use them/place them untill we are really rich.. and for the amount we need to save up for. our fully decorated 6 room base is complete untill this time next year...and by then I doubt if me, or even most of my SG will even be playing then still...ah well.. we will see.
Look on the bright side... we have a mission computer that does nothing as we need 6 anchors in each room and a IoP, cant have that as we dont have space for the Vault room yet. - we have 2 tables that we can make endless tech hardware with..forever!. and wow we can teleport to parez park or creys folly.. so really.. the base is like a trainstation but prettier!// joy! we are not a RP group, but we would of been interested in raids if the game allowed us to do it anytime soon...

He may need to look over those calculations again
Rooms
Energy Terminal 1 - 150,000
Control 1 - 100,000
Workshop 1 - 100,000
Room total 350,000
Items
Basic Generator - 225,000
Mainframe - 150,000
basic worktable - 25,000
items 450,000
total 750,000
However that is the bare minimum and you would be wasting your arcance salvage
I've played a bit of EVE on the side, and when I mentioned I was a CoH addict, I got the response (from an ex-player) that CoH doesn't have any long life things.
And from what I read on these boards, I agreed with him. Though I haven't reached 50 yet, and was enjoying RP. No reason for me to actually start looking for something else to do.
Now with Bases (especially if you want a solo SG base) you have something to work towards. That goal is sometimes just what you need to ignore the grind that you feel from time to time (what? are you saying that's just me?).
To push forward with that shiney (or gloomy, or what ever) base you have in mind.
That said, I do think that some scaling would be welcome:
Basic stuff a little cheaper, advance stuff expensive (maybe more so, I don't know)
I know I've worked hard for the house I bought in Ultima Online. I was very proud of my home. Would I be as proud if I hadn't put so much work into it? Probably, because it turned out just right.

Out of interest, how long did it take you to get that house? I'm interested to see the comparison.
Is it usual in other online games to need to put in months of slog to get a minimum spec base/house/mothership/*insert dwelling place here*?
I'm really interested in this topic, as bases were one of the main reasons the people in my SG bought CoV.
(Not that there aren't other reasons to buy CoV - In fact, there are loads! )
Interestingly I've seen CoV praised in review for the relative ease and low cost of base building when compared to other MMO equivalents (Guild Halls?).
As for a fortress of solitude? Superman has one but he's been around since the forties so he's had plenty of time to gather all that prestige and salvage. Not to mention up until 1985 there were two of them (Still is but one's old and do nothing yet feels he can be a back seat Superman). Can't see it happening anytime soon but maybe a small apartment would be nice.

A month of 'powergaming' or gold herding got me a decent sized plot, 2 weeks later I could afford to buy the first floor. One month after that I finished it (4 floors in all).
Then it took me a day or two to get most of the furniture in (handy whn you're the crafter).
It took me a lot longer to get the material for the high end furniture, an other month I think.
So all in all, the building itself took me 2 and a half months of playing 6-12 hours a day...

Supermans been spamming invites to every n00b in sight since the 1940's. Its the only way I can explain Vibe being in the Justice Leauge...
i dont see why a soloist should be able to get the same as kind of scale base as a whole SG, i think tht if you want to do it yourself then a month or 2 of hard work is nothing to ask, as compared to EVE ebfore, other MMOGs take years to develop something this long term, e.g. player owned structures in EVE, jedi status in SWG etc.
i dont think we shouldbe forced to team, and we arent imo, if you want to solo, play a solo AT, adn dont expect a large base. the sum of of the parts is far less than all the individuals alone, and thats what a group is about, like any large scale business or social group.
as for cheap decorative rooms, these can be used tactically so shouldnt be too cheap of course.
i agree its expensive, but only realy in previous CoH terms, which as many ppl know, can easily die for some playres after hitting level 50, i would much rather spend a moth or 2 getting a base functional then a few more months making it more 'uber' with no limit to how good i could help to make it, than spend a month making it then say, oh well, that was fun.
bases were added as SG bases, a super group, a group of people, i dont think 1 or 2 people count as a group really, but thats just imho, a lot of SGs out there are small, with most only have 8 or so core players, theres still no reason they cant make successful bases.
anyways, as usual, i will say that it really isnt worth moaning about it, and to lump it if u dont like it, u dont have to pay, or play this game, and if u dont want to help a like minded sg then its probably ur own loss, even those that 'dont like to socialise' im sure can find a few ppl who are like them.
why not make a post here asking for a group of ppl who never really want to chat, or team, but u wouldnt mind using tem for some prestige, u never know it may work.
meh, hf peeps
