Maelstrom Story Opinions

It's well written, but isn't Maelstrom's story just a little too close to Iron Man?

Sorry. The new character from I16:
http://www.cityofheroes.com/goingrog...strom_bio.html

His story (until the end) reads like a mix between the Wolverine and Iron Man movies. It's a good read, but it seems like they would have made more of an effort to not sound so much like another well-known hero.

The comic world is so populated with well worn tropes that it's very hard not to trip over a few. Almost every character has the "It's like character A and character B combined, but with power C instead of D."

This is true for:
CoH/V canon characters
Marvel characters
DC characters
-insert your favorite Indy publisher- characters
-insert character you just made yesterday-

Arc #345863 - When The Bough Breaks
"Curse you Perry the Plata...wait, is that Love Handel?" - Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, Phineas and Ferb

You DO realise that the story is pretty generic and that Going Rogue is NOT i16, right?

I can speak for my own characters as being completely unique. I don't think any of them map to any hero I know of, but your point is valid. Ex. The similarities between Superman and Statesman. But did they have to replace his heart!? Couldn't it have been some other organs instead? That's just a little too Iron Man as far as I'm concerned.

Posted

I don't really see the Iron Man similarities at all. Maybe a little Wolverine, but Wolverine's backstory isn't the most original thing in the world either.

I think Desdemona's backstory is more interesting, and it has Statesman doing something rather heroic for once.

The Iron Man similarity would be the damage to his heart being addressed with a new power source. Also, the fact that his heart was mortally damaged by being wounded/captured by terrorists. It's not exactly the same (since his heart was totally replaced), but the similarity does jump out, especially since the recent Iron Man movie.

Well they had the technology, so they had to rebuild him...

Would be a waste of tax payers money if they didn't...not to mention when is the chance your going to get to spend Six Million Dollars of taxpayers money on cybernetically enhancing someone...I mean...it only happens once every twenty or so years...

...this is City of Heroes, you can pick up bionics at the electronics store down the street.

Yes but while the heroes are successful enough to have influence with saids stores, they don't ship out to the goverment because they only cater to those with super powers...the jerks!

Besides the 6 dollar man (with parts with picked up on the cheap from Cookes electronics) wont have as much impact with the guys in military research now will it?

Don't they have supers on the government, too? Like, I'm pretty sure the president would be able to rip his suit jacket off and suplex enemies of the United States where they stand

Anyone else amused that his origin is "Mercenary Super-powered Soldier" rather than Technology?

No, the Six Million Dollar Man was injured from crashing an experimental spacecraft and had to have legs, an arm, and an eye replaced. No terrorists involved, no heart damage, no new energy source to run (or replace) his heart -- pretty much nothing like what I described.

A new paid expansion that may or may not have a new issue associated with it in the future, but not until after issue 16 comes out according to BaBs. While likely that there will be an issue, or at least an update, to coincide (maybe 17, maybe 18, maybe 35, no one knows), it could also already be in the game's code now and just not turned 'on' yet (probably not, but its possible). But the new update will not be the Going Rogue expansion, and the Going Rogue expansion will not be the new issue. The expansion will likely be a new box on the retail shelves that gives you a serial code that allows you to access the new content associated with Going Rogue.

Samuel, if you make MA arcs, please for the love of all that's holy make that one, I would make it myself but I fear my writing skills would not do the idea of a jacket torn President going all hulk hogan on the enemies of the state.

As for the actual topic, yes it obviously loans from lots of other sources, he's basically the Six Million Dollar man, Iron Man and a few others rolled into one
