Close. AE comes from 'aes cyprium' which means "bronze stuff from Cyprus" which means copper. 'Copper' thus originates from 'Cyprus.' The AE abbreviation used today in that regard means 'copper-ish' and can mean copper, bronze, or brass.
Later, copper gets its own Latin name, 'cuprum', which leads to the real Latin abbreviation of copper on the periodic table of elements, Cu.
