Doms!

I'd like to create a new dom for PvP, but have been "AFK" for 3-4 months now. I am considering Earth or Gravity... but have no clue on what secondaries should go with either.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of the primaries, and then suggest some secondaries that go well with them?

Thanks!

Excuse you.

I was asking for help, and you obviously didnt have any. And of course, I have been doing research.

I didn't want to limit suggestions, but for secondaries I was thinking of Psy or Energy. Thorns seems great too, but I already have an older dom with it.

I'll be only using the dom in SC.

Anything else?

I hear Grav/Elec is good. Grav because of the slows and knockup and Elec because of Build-Up and gratuitous amounts of ST damage. I'm not a big PvPer though, so this is mostly second hand info.

Ignore Southern_Comfort. He shames iced tea with his avatar.

I've personally only played Gravity, but I'll give you a run-through on that.

Pros:
- Gravity makes for a very loose build. You only have a few truly -essential- powers, leaving a lot of room for your damage-dealing secondary.
-Gravity does smashing damage, which can help against DE and some robots.
-Singularity is one of the better pets, and it complements the first pro in that it does a lot of the controlling -for- you, allowing you to focus on burning down your enemies.

Cons:
-Gravity only has a few really -good- powers. The hold negates Lift's knockup, Propel is awful, and your AoE hold is lol, just like every other set's.
-Gravity is very hard to see. It's got one of the most subtle graphical effects in the game, which could bother some people. However, this could be a pro if you're lazy and want to sit back and pretend to do work on teams.
-Due to the lack of very good powers in the beginning (aside from lift), Gravity has a reputation of maturing late, with Wormhole and Singularity at higher levels.

I'm sure other people would have different complaints or points that they like, but that's my personal experience for the set.

/Psi should be good with Gravity now - it was hell before the Dom buff, since both powersets matured very late - Gravity at 26 and Psi at 38 - but now that Psi has been turned into more of a damage dealer, it should be fairly fun. Energy is also in the same boat, and I've heard it's very very easy to get Grav/NRG to permadom.

Why does it matter if your in South Carolina?

Psst, he was asking about PvP.

Although that is still solid info about Grav.

Since it is a pvp question, you might ask it in the pvp forums as well.

I used to pvp, but have not kept up on the new system and don't know what's good now-a-days.

Haha, thanks guys! ^_^ And SC = Sirens Call

How does Earth compare to Gravity?

Doh. Well, I have no idea about anything to do with PvP, but that info is probably still more or less applicable.

Head over to PvP. It's literally a whole new world for PvP doms since the guides were published. Most of the PvP info in them won't be of much help. There seems to be some lively debate and suggestions in the PVP forums about doms thought. Should be helpful.

Duh..... its a mint julep, nitwit.

The misintrepetation of my avatar also applies to the above posters knowledge of a grav/ dom and pvp. I do not reccommend grav// for novices although it is quite fun. I will give the guy that thinks my avatar is iced tea credit for pointing out that with grav timing powersand power selection is crucial simplybecause the kb is a big bonus in pvp and totally messed if a player nullifies it with one of the cancelling powers. Even singy will mess you up if you aren't careful.

If you want a pvp dom do mind/elec or Mind /ener. Yes earth/ is viable but takes juggling because some of earths powers require a grounded target.Ask someone else what "grounded" is. In addition ,expect to spend a chunk on the Black Market to make whatever you choose viable . GLHF!!

I'd make some comments about how I'd recommend gravity over earth for PvP, but I don't want to waste the energy when the thread is just going to get deleted.

Please buff Ice Control.

Hm. My mistake. The lemon and coloration of the drink led me to believe that it was an iced tea.

However, you still shame the drink represented in your avatar with your initial, unconstructive post.

I made a Grav/Energy - Level 18 right now. He's decent, to say the least. Deals a good amount of damage.

I'll keep leveling him and see how he does, and post back my results!

Mind/ or Earth/ paried with /Em or /Elec for best results in PvP

In my opinion grav/ is viable and much fun. I reccommended other sets because the Op stated he is new to the archetype. I think grav/ might not be as easy to get a feel for than some of the other sets playing as a newer dom. Right now mind//elec is one of the fotm"s.

Edited to add: In the end you are the one playing YOUR dominator. Roll a couple of doms and get a feel for what sets you most enjoy playing.Take the sets you fall in love with to level 50. In addition it will be wise to start planning and saving for your end build early on.Head over to the market forums and do a little research in order to get a headstart on being able to generate the enfamy anditems for your final build. A little spent here and there is a much less daunting task than hitting 50 only to realize you havent the funds for your envisioned build.

for sirens call i would go fire/energy. you get power push for kb and your hold doesnt do -kb so you can spam it worry free. /energy also gets most of its best attacks before 30 too.
primaries dont really matter anymore on doms, especially in sc, unless you plan to rely on knockback, in which case things like mind/ come out ahead because it doesnt cancel kb.

Personally, I would go with an Electric/Electric dominator.....

Oh yeah, they don't have those yet! That's okay, I can wait.....

Wait! Does Grav's crush/gravity distortion prevent knockback?

No but it holds them in place and prevents the scatter and wandering around from disorient.

So... if I use a KB power while one of the holds is active (lets say immob) they stay in place ... but does it still not allow them to use attacks? (Like it would if it was regular KB.)

I think this would fall under the point that Southern Comfort was trying to make. The control sets on doms has not changed in some time. Your basicly asking questions now which would be supremely easy to find answers to by following the many dominator guides rolling around the forums.

But to answer your question, the immbl doesnt offer a hold at all, its simply limits movement and provides KB resistances. So much like if you were to use a power in pvp that does KB, but your enemy has KB resistances and isnt knocked back, yes he can keep attacking as if nothing has happened.

The immobilize powers from most control sets have a -kb component to them. Gravity's immobilizes do not; its hold contains the -kb. You can immobilize someone and then fling them across the map at your leisure, or immobilize enemies on a knockdown patch like Freezing Rain where they will flop around but not run away. However, if you try and stack holds on a boss, you won't be able to throw them around to buy time until the hold recharges (like mind or */energy doms can do).

Rule number six of an empathy defender is NEVER underestimate a blaster's ability to die. I don't care if he has CM, Fort, both RAs, bubbles (both FF and Sonic), and is fighting next to a Storm defender with hurricane on. If there is a way to die in that situation, the blaster will find it.
