What are dominators...

I am extremely new to dominators and have been curious for a while. What are they? Are they a ranged AT, support AT, melee? I am perplexed because they have ranged, melee, and support powers.

All of the above.

Doms use their Crowd Control to allow them to leverage their Melee and Ranged powers without getting splatted. The fact that the CC helps the team is a nice bonus, really.

So they're damaging AT that uses debuffs? That is VERY different from any preconception that I've ever had lol.

No, no. They are a damaging AT, yes. They don't debuff, they control. Doms usually lay down their controls, then do their damage while not getting pounded on.

Well, the best answer is... sort of all of the above.

They can Control and Blast well and, with a bit of thought, they can hold their own in a close fight. They can be a team's unfair advantage in almost any situation. They provide good support for the Melee types but are capable of doing the job themselves if need be.

As you might have noticed, it's a favorite AT.

You've played a controller right? Well take a controller and replace his secondary sets, which are buff/debuff, and replace them with the powers of a blapper.

You hold, stun, knock down, teleport, slow, immobilize your enemies then unleash your attacks when they can't fight back.

Much like a spider traps a bug, wraps it up, then starts chewing on it when it's completely unable to escape or defend itself.

Dominators are like those guys who spin plates on sticks. They spin a plate, put it on a stick, move to another stick, spin yet another plate on it, etc. When one plate starts to wind down, they run over, and spin it back up. Eventually they have a bunch of plates on sticks going then the show REALLY starts.

I figured this topic was in respect to going rogue.

As in...

What makes a dominator more preferable to a controller when you can pick?

More damage ( especially with the changes ), especially at lower levels ? No need to lay down buffs/debuffs after you lay down the controls ? Mezz protection and higher magnitude controls when Domination is up ?

Controllers/Doms are actually fairly different.

controller is team oriented with the buffs/debuffs
dominator should be faster to solo

Best picture would be this- most controllers stay on the edge of a scrum, locking down threats either by direct control or debuffs from their secondary. On a team they aren't concerned with killing, (though they certainly can!) just locking down the threats so OTHERS can take them out.

A Dom will be standing shoulder to shoulder with scrappers dishing out damage galore. They toss out their controls just long enough to destroy their targets THEMSELVES on a team. Imagine a Dom as a Scrapper whose "armor" is their controls.

If you have a team that's low on damage.. a Dom might be better, also if you just like seeing an insane amount of damage being tossed around.
