.... I can haz Vanessa...? WIP

I have had a huge fangirl crush on Vanessa DeVore since I first saw her picture way back when I was new here. I have never actually "met" her in the game, mostly because Maylor is not offering me anything these days but "hunt 50 Carnies."

THe MA has offered me the opportunity to finally get the reference screenies that I need, and I am going to indulge my whim to capture the dangerous yet fascinating Vanessa on watercolor paper. I'll be posting my progress as I go along here, if you care to follow along.... and you probably don't, just sayin'

The pose is out of my pose-file, mostly culled from fashion mags over the years. Setting will be the infamous Carnie Warehouse o' Fun. The main source of light will be the crystal ball at her side. I cant decide should it be pink, green or spectral blue.... all would work. I wanted to show all the detail of her costume and show the whole thing at the same time, which isnt easy trust me.

These are the first pencil roughs, have just begun inking. Day #1:

Paper size is 12 x 18" so naturally the whole thing won't fit here.

Nothing too fabulous, but just in case anyone is curious. I use a combination of pencil, pen, ink and water-based paints.

I hate foreshortening:

I really like your style I will definitely be watching.

I would say that her hips are looking a tad small and it's compounded by the fact that her fan and arms are radiating out of the upper part of her body. Makes her look top heavy.

Her right leg (camera left) seems to be bent at a very odd angle too. Perhaps it's the costume, but if the rings on her legs are following a horizontal pattern, then her lower right leg is beyond it's natural movement point. I would suggest changing the pattern to indicate that her leg is still pointing downwards. It's confusing to have the pattern go '( ) (' instead of '( ( (' or even '( | )'.

Your style is very pretty and this has a lot of potential to be a great piece, you'll just want to make sure everything is in it's proper place before you commit to inks.

Kudos! You gotta very designey-ish style thats interesting to look at! And would not be out of place as chapter spacers or illustrations in like... vampire, or horror themed books! Or horror romance!

Before we go any further with talk of unnatural poses, here is the original picture used as positioning-reference. I usually do work from a reference like this, unless its something so basic I can get it by positioning myself in front of a mirror. The pose IS seated and yes, her legs are bent at odd angles:

Yes her left leg is going to be absolute hell to get to look anywheres near correct. This is because I hate foreshortening.

will post further progress this evening....

Day 2: more inks.

Close observation reveals that not only are the gloves and boots covered with multicolored lace, the collar and cuffs are also made of white lace. NOT. HAPPENING. I refuse to try and render ruffled white lace.

So this lace that you see looking really busy here will be muted considerably by the time I am done coloring it.

This thing is far from perfectly proportioned and just generally not perfect. Still a lot of fun tho.

Coming along nicely. :3 I really dig the patterns on the boots and gloves, too. Very nicely done bits of detail work!

OMG! How did I miss this thread! Bad Influence, I am totally liking what I see thus far. Vanessa just happens to be wearing the costume I so want to steal every time I see her in game! I can't wait to see your finished piece!

Day 4: Well, I've just seen that Douglas Schuler guy's gallery, and having seen it I sort of wish I had never started this thread. My main impulse is to pick up my paintbrushes and slink off somewheres to lick my inferior-artistry wounds.

But since we're here.... [sigh] Day 4. Still a very long way to go.

Don't know about Douglas Shuler. Don't even know much about art.

But, I know what I like. I like your work so far and am really enjoying this thread. Thank you for sharing it.

Very cool to see the work in progress. I have next to no artistic ability, so I find this fascinating.

Douglas Schuler is admittedly beyond good, but just because Einstein rocked so hard doesn't mean the rest of us physicists have taken our balls and gone home Don't worry about it.

You're rocking this piece, and I can't wait to see more of it
