To Rise or Not to Rise

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to fit Rise of the Phoenix into my FA/SS/Pyre build...

This toon is mostly PvEm, maybe alittle PvP...

Do I need it?

It's a self-rez. If you can't fit it in to the build, I wouldn't worry about it. You can only use it if you die, so not really crucial.

It's not an absolute must have, but it can be nice all the same. It's not just a simple rez, it's something you can pop immediately on defeat, knocking back and disorienting foes in the vicinity (and you should have plenty there if they were able to defeat you in the first place). It's a good way for you to keep tanking and recover from whatever was strong enough to defeat you.

I rarely use it on my Fire/Fire (he's received many compliments on his sturdiness), but there have been times when the stuff hits the fan, and then I'm glad I have it. For example, I was the tank on an 8 man team running through the new Cimerora mission where you face off against Ghost Widow. The team managed to aggro the whole room and her... I would have been fine with just the room, but her "hold of death" did me in. I popped Rise of the Phoenix and I was good to go for the rest of the fight.

Keep in mind that my Fire/Fire only managed to squeak it in at level 49, as things like Taunt, Tough, Weave, Char, etc. had higher priority.

eh, it depends on your play style.
I freakin' love it! I don't play my fire/fire brute much so I always have a ton of patrol XP. Of course, if I'm paying attention, I wouldn't get debt anyway.
1. Situation starts going south.
2. Self destruct.
3. Rise of the Phoenix.
4. Profit.

I've altered my play style to accommodate this tactic. If we find a group that will be a problem, I volunteer to go in first and do as much damage as possible before / during / after dying.

You have to lose before it works. I would never suggest taking it in place of something that could be used all the time.

Some people like it, I just done care for my characters dying if at all avoidable.

I respectfully but entirely disagree with Ace. Dying isn't 'losing'. It's reaching a point where you're being challenged. I do agree on the other part, though - it's a power you should take, but an occasional power. Take things you're going to use all the time first.

I don't think of it as losing... I think of it as giving those people who keep following me around a chance to actually shoot something for a bit before I explode everything as I stand back up. Of course, that's from the perspective of a fire armor *scrapper*, and we all know how psycho *they* are.

More seriously, defeats happen. We all would love to pretend that our characters never get the worse end of a fight, but that's just not the case. And especially for fire aura tanks, I think it's useful to be able to get back up while simultaneously incapacitating the majority of the baddies who put you down. Fire tanks have less mitigation than most tanker primaries, and lack a god mode to hit when things look bad. Given that tankers are generally expected to absorb damage and control aggro for the team, I think it's a good idea to have a tool in your box to allow you to resume tanking if your mitigation fails you. While I'm not intending to badmouth fire here, it does have more need for such a tool than some other sets. It's not mandatory for sure, and there are other abilities you can also take to help you tank better, but it can be useful.

Plus, on a completely different note, it's *fun*! "Oh, you put me down? Well here, take this!" *KABOOM!* Seriously, explosions are just cool. I don't have any special love for most self-rezzes, but rise of the phoenix is one I always try to make room for.

This is what it means to be a tank!

Meh, defeat happens to everyone, not just Fiery Aura. And I do think RoTP is technically a godmode. I used to be annoyed with it for all the reasons people list, but it's really a second chance, a chance to be able to handle more than you could. This disorient, KB, health, etc. allow you to keep going beyond what you normally could.

I'd agree that you should grab other things to help your survivability and such first, but I'm starting to think it's maligned more than it should be, especially now that debt means so little. You just can't stop a Fiery Aura Tank, they keep going no matter what. If you defeat them, they rise again: with a vengeance.

The best thing for the OP is to try it on test and see if they like it.

If you do take and you find you're using it every time it recharges, there might be something missing from your build. ;]

I've made mpov on rise of the sphincter clear over the years, I hate it, but that's only my opinion. =T

i had a question much like the title of this thread go through my head on my date last week

I enjoy it as an, "Aha screw you" power.
It very rare for an enemy to kill my fire tank in the first place and if they do they probably wont survive the immediately enacted round two.

Unless they're Ghost Widow.

I like RotP, but I also only put it in at 49. It's a fun power, and one of my favorite animations in the game.

[/ QUOTE ]I like it on my tanker and my blaster - but I'd never sweat over 'forcing' it to fit in. It's the very definition of a power that's nice to have, but not necessary to have. I'd also never socket it.

Its a tool that you can use to help defeat the enemy. I have it on my stalker(Dark Armor - Soul Transfer), but could not fit it into my fire tank.
