Questions from a newbie

Hi, first off, if there is an FAQ that covers these inquiries, please direct me to it. Otherwise, here are my questions thus far:

1) How do you work the chat system. Is it because i'm on trial that i cant talk to people? i try typing in the help channel and i don't see what I've typed show up under the help tab.

2) I see people with wings. Is that an option you get when you choose to fly, or what? How do you acquire them?

3)How do you join groups?

I'm sure I will have many more questions. This seems like a very simple game from the box, but is actually somewhat complicated.

Thanks all,
Zion

1) You are correct - trial accounts cannot send /tells. The reason being that the gold farmers used to spam tells like nobody's business. Blame them.

2) Certain wings are veteran rewards for being in the game for X amount of time; other wings are costume pieces that you buy the recipes for at Wentworth's or the Black Market, then craft, then go to the Tailor's. They do not automatically give you Flight - that's a power you can take at lvl 14 (or Hover at lvl 6 for slower flight).

3) I don't remember offhand if trial accounts can join SuperGroups/VillainGroups, but I don't think so. As for joining teams, you can announce in Local that you're looking for a team and have someone invite you.

Does that help?

Unfortunately, I've never used the help channel so I can't help you with that.

[/ QUOTE ]

There are several methods of accquiring wings. Most of them have to be crafted using the invention system. Some others come as part of a purchaseable booster pack.

3)How do you join groups?

You can't invite people to a team on a trial account. You have to be invited by others. Unfortunately, you also can't send tells so broadcast is your best option. Click on the small 'B' in your chat window and type something like "Lvl X Archetype LFT". Including your powersets will be helpful as well.

If you're seeing people using the Help Channel but can't see anything you try to say, then use /hc at the beginning of each line to send directly to the channel. If you're not seeing anyoone use Help, then right click on the window select Edit Tab, and make sure the Help feed is listed on the left. If it's not, add it.

I am pretty sure they changed things so that trial users could use Help, but not other server wide channels. I could be wrong though.

You are on a trial, and therefore cannot use the broadcast channel, or tells. To talk in the help channel, use /hc Question. Edit your chat tabs to make sure the chat channel is showing.

2) I see people with wings. Is that an option you get when you choose to fly, or what? How do you acquire them?

Wings are purely cosmetic. You can fly without them. You can have wings and not fly. However, they do look cool, and flap when you fly.

Some wings are available only as veteran rewards (angel wings, demon wings, 15 months paid time, I think). Some wings are only available as crafted items (burnt wings, tech wings, dragon wings, bone wings, cherub wings, bat wings, others?)

The Valkyrie (armoured and feathered wings) are only available if you apply a Mac Edition serial code, or Mac Item Pack serial code to your account. It works on PC computers too.

3)How do you join groups?

Since you are on trial, you cannot join supergroups, although you may be able to start one at level 10. Supergroups are more permanent associations, with ranks, permissions, and often bases. Often called "guilds" in games with less spandex.

Teams are loose assocations of people put together to run some missions or complete some tasks. Since you are on a trial, you cannot invite people to your team, although you can be invited. Sometimes called a "party" in games where no-one seems to own a cellphone.

To start a team while on a trial, you'll need the help of someone with a full account. Use the help channel (/hc) or local to ask around, politely, please.

www.paragonwiki.com as previously mentioned, is a good source of info. As are these boards. If you ask a question, you're much more likely to be flooded with excessively helpful people than to get snark.

What server are you playing on? Cash permitting, I may be able to help you get some wings early.

Also, you can get a jet pack, good for 2 hrs of flying time, at level 5-10, for both heroes and villains.

Well, thanks all.

Xalaqia, thanks, but I'll just start saving up ^-^

I'll have to upgrade my account it seems. Unless i want to solo for the next two weeks. So that means when my fiance gets this downloaded, we can't group together cause we're trial?

oh, I'm Virtue server btw.

Additional note about the Help Channel: the game is stupidly, stupidly broken and has been for many patches now. They changed the command /h message from sending a message to the help channel, to simply giving an error as now /h brings up the help menu. /hc message is now required to talk to the help channel as indicated above. However, the in-game utilities for typing in a channel, such as where it says "Help:" before your message in the UI by being in Active Tab mode (click the tiny A above your chat box) which makes the game send messages to the default chatting channel in the highlighted chat tab, still uses /h, not /hc. So you must manually type it.

It is so lovely that such a stupid, stupid bug is present to hinder trial accounts. It does not make people look favorably on a game with such a simple but damaging-for-trials bug persisting for a few months, through many patches.

You can also talk in local chat, which puts out your message to those surrounding you in a given smallish radius, by typing /L before your message, or choosing Local: on the dropdown that gives you Help: and Broadcast: etc. Use Local if you join a team or need to talk to a specific person; Help broadcasts your message to everybody on the entire server.

Welcome to paragon city!

It is true that (due to horrible goldfarming spam) trial accounts are quite limited. I'm sorry about that. You can't get above level 14, you can't carry more than X influence (something like 60 thousand), you can't invite to teams, can't use /tell or /broadcast . I think you can use /l ("local") to say something that can be heard in maybe a 100 yard radius. That's about it. You might want to send a message like "Level 5 Blaster" [or whatever you are] "on trial account LFT." [Looking For Team]

To get a true travel power (Superspeed, Flight, Teleport or Superjump) you need to pick up a "prerequisite" power at level 6 or higher and then you can pick up the actual power at level 14 or higher. The four choices have different advantages and disadvantages; I have a friend who used to log on for a half hour at a time and just fly around. It's relatively slow, if you're looking at it from a minimax perspective... but he just loved to fly.

Have fun and don't be afraid to ask questions. I love to hear myself talk!

If you want to to team with your sweetie, you'll either need to upgrade to a full account, or get a third party to link you up. Ooh, kinky!

Can trial characters enter into level pacts?

A level pact is an agreement between two characters on different accounts that distributes any xp earned between them, no matter who is online or not. It's a good arrangement to prevent one character from outlevelling the other.

Even if you can't set one up, you can still use the sidekick/exemplar system, if there is at least 3 levels between you.

trial players can join teams, they just can't /invite anyone to anything. Last I knew, 2 trial players could ask a full account player to invite each of them and then leave the team, leaving the 2 trial players teamed together.

Just to emphasize a point that other people have touched on: you can fly without having wings. You can have wings without being able to fly. In City of Heroes, form and function are deliberately separated. You can use the costume editor to give yourself shiny metal armor, but that won't give you any sort of defense or damage resistance.

In other games, it's common for everyone to have the same gear, which makes them all look alike. CoH deliberately broke that particular mold. Wings are part of your costume. Getting wings does not make you fly. What makes you fly is having the right superpower, and having that power does not give you wings. Ability and appearance are totally disconnected. It can be confusing at times, but personally I like it a lot.

Yeah it makes sense. I really like the look of the wings. i looked at all the wings on the wiki site someone listed here and am saving up for tech wings. I've got 2 parts of it now i have to save up for the expensive part and the actually costume pattern. it will certainly take a while, but it will be well worth it ^-^

oh, I upgraded to full account so i can use the Auction house (er wellingtons right? xD )

Congratulations! Glad to have you with us. And it's Wentworth's. This is Paragon, not Waterloo

Once you've built the wings, you'll have to visit a tailor to add them to your costume. There will be a small charge for that.

Tailors are located in the North-West area of Steel Canyon, or there is one near the King's Row gate to Independence Port.

If you end up needing it - Villain side it's teh black market (Runs out of Semitrucks) but it works identically to Wentworths.

Wentworths and the Black market are cross-sever - (There is no Justice BM vs. Virtue BM, for example) but they are not cross faction (Hero market is separate from Villain market).

And be aware that when you craft a costume part, it only shows up at the tailor for the character who crafted it. So don't have Character A craft it when you want to use it on Character B.

A word of warning, so you don't get to the tailor and get disappointed. Both wings and capes are 'back options' and you can't use them until you do the cape mission which becomes available at level 20. (An exception is in place for capes from a PURCHASED booster pack, like the Valkyrie/Mac pack.)

Wings don't count as capes. I have them on lowbie characters that can't wear capes yet. And I mean ordinary drop-recipe wings like the insect wings, nothing special.
