And here's the list so far, in no particular order:

Farmer: enjoys finding and running the content that gives the best "Bang for the Buck".

Powerleveller/PLer: enjoys getting a character to level 50 as fast as they can. Usually also a Farmer.

Leveller: Enjoys getting the next level, the next power, the next set of slots. Enjoys "finishing" a character and starting the next one. The difference between them and Powerlevelers is that speed is not as much as factor, nor are they as often Farmers.

Roleplayer/RPer: Enjoys the role-playing aspect of the game, from having a specific concept for their character that guides their costume and/or power choices, to creating an entire life story, to interacting with other players as much as possible "in character".

PvPer: enjoys Player versus Player combat, whether in the Arena or in the PvP zones.

Badger: enjoys collecting badges. Often specializes in a specific type of badge.

(Ebil) Marketeer: enjoys "playing the market", maximizing their Influence/Infamy through buying and selling at Wentworth’s/the Black Market.

Hardcore: enjoys the challenge of trying to avoid ever being defeated. Either from level 10 up ("Debt = Delete"), or at ANY level ("Defeat = Delete"). (Note: this usage of "Hardcore" is different from "Casual vs. Hardcore".)

Min/Maxer, Optimizer: enjoys figuring out how the get the absolute best Defense/Accuracy/To Hit/etc. they can, and working to achieve that build. Sometimes also called “Hardcore”.

Forumite: enjoys spending time in the Forums, frequently spending more time there than in the game.

Soloer/Soloist: enjoys solo play, possibly even prefers it to team play.

Teamer: enjoys playing with a specific group of people.

Pugger: enjoys playing on Pick-Up Group teams.

Commander: enjoys assembling and leading teams.

Fighter/Combatant: the actual combat itself is the Fighter's primary reason for playing the game.

Steamroller/Speedster: enjoys completing missions/TFs/SFs/etc. as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Grouper: enjoys interacting with their SG/VG, especially as an officer.

Explorer: Explorers come in different types:

<ul type="square">World Explorer, Tourist: enjoys exploring the out-of-the way areas, and/or collecting Exploration Badges. Often clears the "Fog of War" from the entire zone map.

Mechanics Explorer, aka Analyzer, Investigator: enjoys exploring how the game and the powers work, and how they interact.

Seeker of the Obscure: A subset of World Explorer, the Seeker likes to hunt down the really obscure. Like the "meat locker" in the RWZ Base. (No, I'm not going to tell you where it is, because that would spoil the fun.)[/list]Wanderer: has no particular playstyle, plays multiple alts at erratic times and dates, willing to try pretty much anything. (May have the attention span of a fruit fly on caffeine.)

Street Sweeper: Enjoys leveling up via regular “Street” content. The Hero that cannot ignore a cry for help, the Villain that can’t resist an unguarded mailbox.

Tester: enjoys playing on the test server(s) to explore what's new in each patch and Open Beta. A Closed Beta Invite is their "Golden Ticket".

TFer/SFer: specifically enjoys Task Forces and/or Strike Forces. Knows them inside and out.

Content Monger: enjoys collecting souvenirs.

Socializer: enjoys the interaction with other players.

Architect/Writer: enjoys creating MArch missions/arcs for the story. Tends to focus on having the story "just so".

Engineer/Mechanic: enjoys creating MArch missions/arcs for the mechanics of it. Tends to focus on perfecting the mechanical details.

AEer/MAer/MArcher: prefers running Mission Architect content to regular content.

Completist: enjoys doing every mission and taskforce in the level range and getting every contact to maximum reputation. May spend a lot of time with XP turned off.

Mentor: enjoys helping other players, especially newer ones. Always ready to “lend a hand”.

Builder/Base Builder: enjoys designing and building Super Bases.

Organizer: enjoys organizing and running costume contests, raids, etc.

Costumer: enjoys designing and creating costumes.

Artist: enjoys creating fan art, CoH-related videos, etc.

???: enjoys a wide variety of activities, but doesn't identify as any specific type of player.

NOTE: the following types of play are specifically prohibited by the rules of the game. These actions may subject the player to punishment up to and including termination of their account:

Griefer: enjoys reducing other players' enjoyment and/or success at play, and/or interfering with other player's actions.

Exploiter: enjoys ferreting out and utilizing content that gives excessive rewards (as determined by the Devs).

edit: a little reorganizing, a little expanding

Two that I think fit me, teamed and solo respectively:

Motormouth: Whether it's radio missions, a task force or V-day mish, or just arguing on a global channl, they just won't. Shut. Up.

Wanderer: No particular playstyle, stumbles around the game on too many alts at erratic times and dates, giving everything a try. Likely to have the attention span of a rodent.

- Street Sweeper

- and something along the lines of game mechanics tester / verifier or reverse engineerer

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

We're missing TESTER here!!!

ie: someone who plays on the test server a lot or exclusively
someone who participates in closed and/or open beta.

tf'er enjoys task forces, knows them like the back of his hand

Lots of 50's yada yada. still finding fun things to do.

I'm mostly a Combatant/Fighter, but also a Mechanics Explorer. With a side of costumer. My hobbies include stunning wizards and pushing them off cliffs. If you set it up right, they'll come right back to you for another go.

I solo a lot, and I'm also the opposite of Steamroller, even on a team. My builds and playstyle are aimed at patient, inexorable victory. Might make me a Control Freak, though I don't use holds all that often.

Storm defender: everything stunned and/or airborne all of the time. Eventually, they'll take enough damage to lose.
Dark defender: everything cowering and asleep. Bad dreams. Defeat at my leisure.
Tanking: everything focused on me, periodically falling down due to being smacked with an axe. (I know, nothing new here, but I enjoy it a *lot*.)
Blaster: everything out of its own range (but not mine) and on its back until defeated. (Mezzes are a problem here.)
Mind/storm controller: So many options. Stunned, falling down, asleep, cowering, confused, held.
Dark scrapper: I skipped the cone attack. Single-target focus, my attacks, fear and healing vs their dps. (I almost never team with this, because I don't really add much unless a team needs a low-damage free agent that doesn't need looking after.)

This keeps me entertained for hours. Playing a fire blaster on a steamrolling team keeps me entertained for about a mission and a half.

Angel Witch II - Chord of Souls - Storm Witch II - Princess of the Dawn - Standing Horse - Witch of Xymox
Silent Scream - Shadow Witch II - Liquid Serenade - Nebulous Dawn - Ghost Witch II -Xiberia

Street Sweeper: Enjoys foiling Purse Snatching, Drug Deals, Break-Ins, and general Loitering.

I need a better definition for Street Sweeper, one that covers Redside, too.

I didn't add Motor Mouth because I think that's more a personality type than a way to play the game.

Street Sweeper- one who enjoys "arresting"(street sweeper) or "roughing up"(hunter) npc's in zones in between their main play type. May be more particular to this play type during lower levels; then they may branch out to other types of play.

*I don't believe anyone would go 1-50 just on street content alone. *

May not be deserving of full category...maybe belong as a sub-type under Explorer. (?) (OTOH, may be deserving of TWO seperate catergories with Street Sweeper refering to blueside and Hunter refering to redside)

what do you think?

If I can push through to fire sword circle, it'll be cake after that. Getting there, though.... such tedium.

I think I can come up with another one.

Daredevil - A subset of the combatant, but the daredevil purposely seeks out challenges that he or she really has no business attempting. Like soloing AVs on a sub-optimal build or even tanking an AV for a team on a Blaster. Win or lose doesn't matter much, it's the rush of facing impossible odds... and sometimes pulling it off anyway. May or may not be the mindset that created the Blapper style Blaster.

It's more of a subtype, yes, but I feel the "doing something stupid, and getting away with it" style was missing. It's surprising what you actually CAN pull off in this game, even without Min/Maxing. Scrappers are good at this type, too.

[/ QUOTE ]I've never played Redside. Blueside, street sweeping is solely of arresting mobs standing around or walking in a limited paths on the streets. They may be threatening civilians in various ways (just threatening, or attempting robbery), committing various acts of larceny or vandalism, fighting one another and/or local law enforcement, or just "hanging out".

What can you do for XP on the streets Redside?

Ambush Longbow and Arachnos. Also Hellions, Family, Scrapyarders and pretty much anyone you see; but especially Longbow.

I have several villains who make a hobby out of seeking out and destroying high-conning Longbow Wardens. I have been playing CoH since march of '08 and still to this day, the only good Longbow is a Longbow with a red reticle and an empty HP bar. Hate them.

[/ QUOTE ]Heheh. All the way through, I kept thinking "sounds like a scrapper to me".

I thought of:

Leeroy: completely spurning tactics or planning, Leeroys prefer to hurl themselves into the middle of the fight and see what happens. Leeroys tend to die frequently, and spectacularly. (Named for the WoW character, Leeroy Jenkins.)

but I'm not sure if it's an approach to playing the game, or more of a personality type, like "Motor Mouth".

What do you folks think? (And if you think Motor Mouth belongs, I'll put it in too!)

Yes but we don't need to feel quite so guilty about it.

Actually, they're fighting each other, lighting fires, tagging buildings, and generally lurking. At a few points there are active gunfights and Mexican Standoffs.
