Playstyles
I am probably mostly achiever...
'Cept my goals change on a daily, weekly, or even hourly basis.
I min/max, concept, create, collect, explore, achieve, team, solo, AE, even sometimes rp. The only thing I really don't do in this game is PvP. I don't like MMO pvp.
I generally call myself Casual Hardcore. I'd probably be totally awesome at something if I could manage to stick to one activity for more than a couple of days.
Min/Maxer is missing from the first list.
Hazel Black - Mind/Psi D
Stephanie Winters - Nightwidow
Jacqui Frost - Cold/Ice D
Jacqui Embers - Fire/Kin C
Simone Templar - Fire/MM B
Mallory Woods - Kin/Rad D
Sanguine Melody - Grav/Sonic C
Fumina Hara - Plant/Storm C
Nutmeg - Warshade
Lauren Wu - SS/WP B
I agree that these are more aspects of play than exclusive styles. For instance, one could be both a completist and a content maven, an AE specialist and a min/maxer, or any number of other combinations.
One I haven't seen mentioned here is "Mentor"- someone whose primary goal is assisting other players, especially newer players, with aspects of the game. This might mean teleporting and healing characters in trouble, like the Taxibots or Paragon Search and Rescue, providing advice about a build or a game mechanic, answering questions, or literally sidekicking another character in order to show a player something interesting, fun, or significant. I've seen lots of players over the years who spend most of their time, at least on specific characters, doing this kind of thing. Personally, I find it to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things to do in the game, too.
"Bombarding the CoH/V fora with verbosity since January, 2006"
Djinniman, level 50 inv/fire tanker, on Victory
-and 40 others on various servers
A CoH Comic: Kid Eros in "One Light"
Builders
Base construction artists
Manifest Destiny style SG leaders
Organizers
RP, PvE, PvP - those folks who put together player-run events or raids for fun.
I noticed a "teamer" but id add the pugger. Whereas a teamer focuses on long term relationships with other players to make well coordinated teams, a pugger thrives in the protean nature of randomly grouping with strangers with no regard for team makeup or reputation. Puggers have all the debt badges, but you also gain learn some impressive adaption skills when your team is thrown together by random chance, and you meet some interesting people by pure chance.

Gonna add a slash to this one.

Wow! Awesome help, all!
I agree, "playstyle" isn't quite right. Suggestions?

WITHOUT getting into a discussion of the pros and cons of each style, I'm interested in how many different playstyles are distinct enough to have their own names.
I'm aware of:
Farmer
Powerleveler/PLer
Roleplayer/RPer
PvPer
Badger
(Ebil) Marketeer
Any others?
(Casual vs. Hardcore is more an expression of attitude towards the game than a specific playstyle.)

My only issue with your list is farmer = powerleveler.
Farming for XP .....

How about Motivation to Play or Type of MMOGer?
But things like motivation is going to get the ephemerals, like "to have fun, duh." I think your intent is clear.
I'll break up Explorer into:
Content/World Explorer
and Character/Mechanics Explorer
As I'm a Character/Mechanics Explorer, I want to understand how everything works how different parts of a game plays for different characters, what's the game like following this path. In a style arc near Alt Aholic.

Analyzer/Investigator: Looks at the game as a puzzle.
Optimizer: Strives to achieve the maximum of an aspect of their character.

My playstlye is all the matters.

[/ QUOTE ]Powerleveler = subset of Farmer. I don't see how you can be a Powerleveler without being a Farmer, but I think you can be a Farmer without being a Powerleveler.

What about punching stuff? I'd bet that some players log in mostly to do the combat because combat is fun.
Not necessarily mindless racking up of kill numbers, but the actual animations and tactics of battle. People who line up to kick a foe off a ledge might be in this category. People who kick a gray foe off the ledge, for no reward, probably are in this category.
Whether it is carefully planned to produce optimal reward or not is relatively unimportant to the pastime; it doesn't necessarily involve exploring; story and RP may be ignored. Teaming is fine -- both to see more "action" in a given fight, and to have people around to ooh and ahhhh after a really good punch.
I don't know what you'd call this...uh...sphere of interest in the game -- combat artist?
[/ QUOTE ]
I'd call that Combatant.
And I fit in that category. I often log into a melee character just to punch/stab/kick/slash/electrocute/pummel things for no real reason other than the fight itself.

<Quick Reply>
If we're measuring habits, not ideology, I might call this "Dominant Play Habit," or something equally clinical.
Personally? I'm an explorer, RPer, and soloer. In every MMO I've ever played.

I know this guy that plays for the sole purpose of griefing others, but since he is not breaking any direct rules of the TOS or EULA, he has been here 48+ months.
I honestly don't believe that ruining someone elses day is actually considered fun. Something has to be broken inside someone in order for that to even be on a persons top 10 list of things to do.
I'm not sure of which word could sub playstyle but its out there i'm sure...maybe something as simple as player type?
Something I haven't seen added yet is Artist.
You know, the ones who are obsessed with the character creator, and/or do fan art and videos.

[/ QUOTE ]Well, actually, probably not. But if they don't get something out of it that they consider "fun", why they are doing it? I may not think there's any fun in what they're doing, but THEY should.
It's a game. That's the PURPOSE of a game, to have fun.

Something I haven't seen added yet is Artist.
You know, the ones who are obsessed with the character creator, and/or do fan art and videos.
[/ QUOTE ]My first reaction was that Artist doesn't really apply, because that's not playing the game. But neither is Forumite then.
I like "Player Type" and "Aspects". Because all of these are the answers to "What kind (or type) of player are you?", "What is it about the game that keeps you paying your subscription(s)?", and "What aspect of the game, if removed completely, would greatly reduce your enjoyment, or even cause you to quit?" And thus, the Artist, the Costumer, and the Forumite are all valid "Player Types".
Power: I think your "Funseeker" is too general, but I think you're onto a valid category: the player who doesn't favor any single aspect, but does whatever strikes them as being enjoyable. They've participated in many different types of play, and don't pursue any specific ones to a significantly greater degree than any others.
I suggest "General Player", or "GP": enjoys several different types of play, and doesn't identify with any specific one(s).
What about "Completist"?
With Peacemoon, I decided to make a character I would stick to and invest all my time in, to the exclusion of all alts. I wanted to experience all the games content on him, a lot which I had done before and some which I hadn't.
This meant doing every mission and taskforce in the level range and getting every contact to maximum reputation. Also aiming to get most of the badges I could.
With the amount of content in the game, it was only possible to do it with XP turned off. So this feature is one of my favourites. I had to turn xp off every 5 levels so that I could complete all the missions before proceeding to the next batch. I think I was level 19 for well over a week while I finished everything off.
Insane? Yes! However I find it very fun. I even got to experience Croatoa for the first time and it was great fun.
More souvenirs then I care to read though, and tons of merits ;-)
