The fact that the devs have dealt with the issue in the exact manner highlighted might just be the reason that all of these threads are popping up.
No excuse whatsoever for their reaction, and it's a blatant lie when they said it would "only be the most egregious abuses" and "handled on a case-by-case basis".

Let me say this again. This whole "people were wrongfully banned!" claim is total BS. Because you're just outright lying about what's going on, for the benefit of newcomers to this thread or the game, let me redirect the conversation. Here's the scoop.
These people, because they're mad that they weren't allowed to farm, exploit, and grief their way through the game unchecked and completely destroy the Mission Architect system, are trying to push this idea that you might be banned at any given moment just for playing the game. The objective, of course, is to get you to leave the game. In their demented mindset, if they can tear down the subscriber numbers, they figure that they can coerce the developers into turning off all controls and letting the game go to farming hell. Voting with their wallets isn't good enough; they're trying to vote with your wallet, too.
I have been playing this game for five years. I've never been banned, I've never had any character genericked, nuked, or nerfed. Not one single time, and it's not like I just stand around role-playing all the time. Like you, I do all the normal stuff. For over a month, I've used the Mission Architect system extensively. I've never gotten into any trouble, never had an arc pulled, never suffered any consequence for using the system as it was intended. The crowd I run with is pretty much like me. They play the game, they don't look to exploit the hell out of everything in the game, and some are Mission Architect fanatics. Like me, they have never had any problems with the developers, moderators, or GMs. Not one single time.
This whole "developers are bullies" claim is complete idiocy. If you're being stupid, yeah, there will be consequences, ranging from a wrist slap to a ban, depending on what you did. This is a good thing. Griefers suck, and any rational person will realize that dealing with them is in the best interest of everyone else playing the game.
If you're not doing anything wrong, and just to clarify, abusing the Mission Architect as a farming tool is wrong, then you won't have any problems.
Please keep in mind that the people who are claiming mass bans are pushing an agenda. If you think that you might be punished for playing the game, then you've been duped by people with ulterior motives. If by some weird chance you do get punished and you're completely innocent, the situation is easily resolved by escalating the issue to Niviene or customer support. This is no different than any time in the game's history.
However, and this is very important, this situation very highly unlikely. Again, mass bans of innocent bystanders is a lie, a feeble attempt by people who are mad that they thumbed their noses at the developers, tried to destroy a cool game features, and got busted for it.

The scoop is, TonyV has no idea of what has happened and the mods have gone through looking for posts to edit or delete that discuss what happened. He's just trying to push an agenda while simultaneously complaining that people who disagree with the actions the devs are taking "are exploiters and cheaters who are just mad that they can't do it anymore".
He's a hypocrite of the highest order, and seems to be blindly ignoring the fact that the devs likely didn't even get as many farmers or PL'd characters as innocent bystanders, but he'll push you to shut up and not say anything because "if you say anything you're just complaining because you were cheating".
He has also in other threads compared PLing to armed robbery, states how "horrible for the game" it is without any evidence, and is conveniently ignoring the fact that all of the uproar coming from the devs isn't about farming or PLing in general, it's specifically about using the Mission Architect - something that the devs have to work rather hard at to keep up with risk/reward in - to do it.

so explain to me tony how it is that a toon that hasn't been logged on since before MA and lv pacted with someone else's toon is being deleted. i haven't had this happen to me but i do know others that have. you are obviously not reading entire posts before you reply or just have so much brown on your nose that is is severly effecting your sight. yes some people blatently exploited while others didn't. and it is the people who were wrongly effected by this whole sweep that are trying to voice their opinions. Go actually take some time to find out yourself. Go play the game, have fun, and see if you get banned. Don't want to risk it? Then stop random people on the streets of Paragon City. Ask them something like, "Hey, I've heard that there are mass bannings going on. Have you been punished in any way? Any characters deleted or level-revoked? Any 72-hour timeouts? Log in to find any stuff missing from your inventory?" Keep track of how many respond that they have, indeed, personally been punished. Don't count "I know someone..." answers, because everyone here "knows someone" that something happened to.
You are the one who is making wild accusations here, not me. You should be the one who has to back them up. But you know, just because I'm absolutely certain of this, I'm not even going to ask you to. Undoubtedly, you'd tell us about how it would break forum rules (as if that's bothered you before), how you have a friend of a friend of a friend who got banned, or most likely of all, you'd just make [censored] up.

That anyone is saying "mass bannings" is something that you're making up. Yes, it only happened to a few accounts that I'm aware of. The fact that it happened to anyone - even just a handful - makes the devs wrong, and makes them liars when they said that any action would be handled on a case by case basis. They should own up to the fact that they made a mistake, apologize, and provide assurance that it won't happen again (not that there's any more recourse then if it does than there is now, just that if they have a plan of action to prevent such a thing it shows that they're taking responsibility for their actions).
And there's somewhat of a logical fallacy in logging into the game to ask people if they're banned, but I don't expect you to be able to figure that out for yourself.

Tony's sheer ignorance of certain people who have gotten toon's deleted/banned is funny. But, given his past history, Its in his nature to advocate for the underdog.
My irritation stems not from people getting banned - its a game and bannings happen. My irritation comes from the idea of 'Policy making on the fly' that the devlopers have been using lately.
All Positron had to do was make a post stating that anyone caught using MA to farm xp would be banned from X point on Going forward. The whole retroactive banning and that craptastic job they did with the whole thing (Yeah, how intelligent is it to script a mass banning? That will go over REAL well with the people who get flagged unintentionally.) is a complete mess.
Tony (And not just tony, but the people that are on the side of "Lolumad at ur banningz u shud hav nown lol"), I, like you, have played this game for a long time. I would be laughing too at the people who got banned for continual leveling after they were warned. The point is - they weren't. Punishing users for A) bad coding and B) past offenses when nothing offical had been stated is wrong.

nah tired of collapsing guilds in WoW and honestly I don't/won't have the time needed to do the end game raiding. So its not so much that this game is better...this game can just be enjoyed with little time involved.
The reason the devs are taking so much flack is because this issue could have been a non-issue in beta. From everything I have seen they clearly knew these exploitable areas were there in MA and did nothing to fix it because they wanted to rush out the new issue to the player base. Then all of a sudden they realize the epicness of their failure to listen to people in BETA and they bring out the atom bomb instead of just dealing with the issue in a reasonable manner.
It does cause some fear in the player base, I mean how are they going to react if something else happens? Honestly in the overall scheme of things this was a fairly minor thing and they could have easily fixed it by saying, "If you do it going forward we will find you and take care of it and you will be punished accordingly." There, end of story. Instead they went insane and decided to go overboard with the punishment. If you are going to punish MA people, than why not punish those who still farm in game? The Devs have been very selective in this whole process and have overreacted to a problem they created by not paying attention to the warning signs and what they knew in the beta test.
The whole "leveling to fast" thing is also a concern. Do I have to worry about losing my blaster that I gained 10 levels with in one night because I was sk'd with my SG leader who was lvl 50? I wasn't farming, I wasn't PL'ing, but I might have "leveled to fast." I think it is just the overall reaction to the situation by the developers that is scaring the player base.

um, no, it actually did happen. In their datamining or whatever, they misinterpreted some level pacted toons as exploiting MA due to going from level 1 to 50 in a short time. Some toons were deleted and some temp bans handed out that should not have been. These were appealed, reviewed, fixed, etc. It's been fixed, but that doesn't make it 'not have happened'. Of course, some people went berserk on the forums about it. Annoyingly, it seems most of the loudest screamers were doing their complaining 'on behalf of others' - i.e. screaming just for the sake of screaming and making a ruckus.
Also, some screaming was undoubtedly coming from people who had toons deleted appropriately.
