Name wipe?
Ack, I guess I'm a bit too new to know what this is? Could someone explain?
Have they in the past wiped out everyones names and it be a free-for-all to get back the name you had?
No.
However, the opened up names from inactive accounts from characters that were under a certain level. The most recent times they've done this, it's been limited to characters under level 6, I believe.
It would have no impact on you if your account was active or if your characters were over the cutoff level.

ah ok.
Whew...thanks
Even if your name was wiped, the character would remain. If that account was reactivated, they would need to rename the character, that is all.

At any time, without telling us, they can run a script which free the names of characters who:
- Are under level 6, and
- Are on accounts inactive (unpaid) for over 90 days
A character whose name is freed loses that name if someone else tries to take it. If nobody takes the name, the name is secured again by logging into the character. If the name does get taken, the character is given a free rename.
We don't know how often they have run or will run the name-freeing script, just that they can do it at any time.

They've done a "name wipe" twice. This frees up names on inactive accounts (and other criteria that have changed.)
The first time, it was "Account inactive for 90 days, characters under 35." The second time, after seeing the results of the first, they lowered it to 90 days and characters under level 6.
This does not *delete* the names (or generic them,) and if you have an active account it doesn't affect you at all. If you ARE affected, it just marks the name as - well, "claimable."
Example:
You make Sgt. Firehair. You get him to level 4, log off, and forget about him.
Active account: You're not affected if they run the name script.
Inactive for 90 days: The name is marked as "Available."
Now, if you resubscribe and nobody else has made "Sgt. Firehair," you still have your character with that name. It's no longer available to anyone else. If, between the time the script to free names is run and the time you re-up, someone else DOES make Sgt. Firehair, you log in and he's been renamed Generic 123 456 789. You should, I believe, get an email where you can submit a replacement name, but don't quote me on that.
Edit:
And I agree - this was a perfectly valid question, hardly a troll.
I guess name wipes arent popular... I can understand why...

Given their current requirements (inactive for 90 days, characters under level 6,) I have far less of an issue with it as far as popularity. I just don't particularly think it helps much - solely on the basis (and yes, this is pure assumption) that if it *did,* or NC... er, Paragon Studios thought it was a big enough issue, we'd see it more often.
Then again, with an expansion coming up, I'd wager they'd consider running it again closer to the release date. (I *believe* COV's release was the first time they ran it.)

And you will know that character needs to have it's name resecured because when you select it, as I recall, the character will no show off to the right like it normally would.

It's about as simple a question as "Do people like strawberries?" It was asking an opinion. Now, yes, you can assume that the OP is in favor of it, or he'd not have asked - but asking for opinion doesn't necessarily require clarification of reasoning.
Now, he could do so, yes.
"I think it's about time for another name wipe. We've had a few reactivation weekends and trials, and probably have a lot of low level names that won't be used again. With the upcoming expansion, should they do another name wipe?" would fit your criteria, I'm pretty sure... but he doesn't need to state it to ask people's opinions or start discussion.
It was, frankly, a perfectly fine question.
impish, i posted a question under Player Questions...
this is NOT a hot topic... like 'Dont you think they should nerf widows?'
just relax next time and dont be so quick to shoot off...
this is why I have less posts than you and over a year more forum time... some peeps on here are just rude...

(And as for the name... Black Ice seems a touch obvious - remember, a name wipe is only going to hit inactive under level 6, so I highly doubt in a case like that it'd help. Something like Arctic Eve, perhaps, or a number of synonyms could help.)

I disagree. This HAS BEEN a hot topic in the past. Perhaps not on the level of some other topics, but there has been lots of weeping, and wailing about people not being able to get the names they want. With "over a year more forum time", you should be well aware of this.
I apologize for popping off. It just looked like a very loaded question on the surface.

With the new policy? No, I don't think I've ever seen a single complaint about it. How many minutes does it take to reach level 6...?

This is not about somebody losing a name, it's about somebody wanting to obtain one by calling for a name wipe.

Indeed. Which pretty much limits how many names will be freed up by a name wipe anyway. Which makes the call for a name wipe fairly superfluous. It's currently much less likely that the desired name will be freed up, unless it's from an inactive account.
A person is better off just biting the bullet, lugging out the thesaurus, and putting their grey matter to work.

Not my intention at all. Rather, I was trying to nip a potential cry-fest in the bud. Granted, I was a bit snarky about it, for which I have apologized.
I do, however, stand by my observations. Perhaps the question could have been phrased better to avoid misunderstandings... just sayin'.

There is no limit to the available good names out there (my nine year old is even able to snag good ones).
However, I am working on a rather large list of synonyms, etc. broken down by power-type or personality-type to aid in future character naming (you'd be amazed at the number of terms that would work very well as part of a fire-based character's name).
When finished, would it be worthwhile to post it someplace public for others to reference?

Definitely. There can never be too many guides out there.
Other "easy" add-ons would be adding a title, rank, or color to the beginning, or man/girl/guy/etc to the end. If Icestorm is take, use Captain Icestorm, Lord Icestorm, Icestorm Man, etc.
