In case anyone's curious, if your name has been wiped when you sign in there will be a message to the right where your character would normally appear informing you. Then you can log in and if the name has been taken then as soon as you log in you have to rename your character. A little box pops up for it. So if it happens to you, before logging in make a note in your head of which character it was so you're not spacing on a new name if you have to make one.
I only lost i think 2 or 3 names. When i left it was before any of this went into effect and i read about the level 35 thing or whatever it was and i didn't have a single character that high. I had preordered the game specifically to reserve certain names so it mattered to me. However it turned out ok, i didn't lose any important names and i only lost 3 out of i dunno 50 or so characters. If anyone is really concerned about coming back over this i suggest asking through the support site whether your names are still there.
