My turn at last

I consider myself a fairly casual gamer. I play quite a bit (maybe 15 hours per week on average), but on most toons, I don't play the market or farm. I do quite a few task forces though, since I'm fond of them. Generally, by the time I get to level 10, I have between 100 and 150 million on a toon. Some I actually use it to buy set IOs, and others I just stick with generic IOs and SOs, and funnel the money to another toon.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, you're either a liar, an exploiter, or turn your xp off when you hit level 10 until you have between 100 and 150 million.

All that sounds all gravy, but 65mil isn't really much enough to do anything with.

[/ QUOTE ]

it's enough to frankenslot a couple of characters, or kit one out with a bunch of pretty good set IOs, or slot a couple of powers with *really* good set IOs.

You have a pretty expansive definition of 'nothing'.

Well, for a 50 you'd be lucky to get one of the "coveted" recipes for 65mil. Or you may get 1, then off to save for the rest of the set for 1 power. Yeah, you can get some of the lesser wanted recipes.

so what?

you can get a lot of really good stuff for 65 million, which is a heck of a lot more than "nothing".

it's amazing what becomes possible when you give up knee-jerk negativity and look around a bit.

Then again, this is eryq talking. The mans about as knowledgeable about IO slotting as a pure empath is about playing defender.

lol. hardy har har.... they aren't needed BUT for some dumb reason everyone wants them. i'm not clueless, just think it's stupid that all these recipes are retardly expensive. to have gone from from 30-200mil is ridiculous to me. i'd actually like to have a couple toons purp'd, but not gonna "play the market" for inf. to afford them and i'm not a lucky enough person i guess to gets tons of them in drops.

You think they're expensive because you want them without any effort whatsoever.

Its not the market's fault that you're a lazy, whiny, freeloader.

Not really. I've never actually met an empath who skipped their secondary completely, took the healing pool, and concentrated solely on using empath powers who was anywhere worth their slot in a team.

While your anecdotal evidence is obviously the measuring stick for all humanity, your stereotyping is still stupid.

I can provide plenty of anecdotal evidence to back this up, but unless you can give a valid reason for why your stereotyping is actually logical, no evidence to the contrary is necessary. Feel free to provide evidence of how your stereotyping of all "pure" empaths are useless is logical, if you can.

The fact that lots of people want them doesn't correlate to them being expensive to you?

You want the best, rarest, most desirable stuff, but you don't want to have to put in any effort to get it?

These two things don't qualify as clueless to you?

Awesome.

That's not taking out of context, it's paraphrasing.

Doesn't make much sense to say it's dumb but you want it, and then complain about what you have to do to get it.

It's stupid that people have to drink water, but I'm kinda thirsty. I wish I didn't have to go get a glass and fill it up so I could drink it. Stupid water.

[ QUOTE ]
So i just finished my little experiment i had going by soloing a character (dark/dark/ghost widow brute) from 1-50. My rules were quite simple:
- Play like a casual player playing at odd hours might. I was on for about an hour most mornings just before the server shutdown and occasionally on weekends for a few hours. I didnt team at all, except for a sharkhead sf and a treespec. I was not at max level for either of these and so was getting XP the whole way through. I didnt find it inconceivable that someone might do 1 SF and 1 treespec on their way to 50.

- Using Veteran respecs and freespecs, i respecced at 27, 32 and 37. So when the majority of my SO's were about to expire i could get FULL VALUE from them and get a nice shiny new set.

- Starting from level 30 i would craft any common IO's i had that i had the salvage for. From level 40 i started crafting any Set IO's i had, buying salvage as necessary. All rare salvage drops i got went straight into storage until needed. Its almost full. All enhancements were sold to the appropriate vendor. All common IO's and common and uncommon salvage were listed on the market for 11. For set IO's, it was a case by case basis. For the common trash, 11. For the in demand stuff, i charged what the market would bear. I would also check the crafted prices and see if it was worth it to craft then sell. At 50, all i have left on the market is some mid 40's trashy set IO's.

So what is the result of my CASUAL PLAYER experiment?
Total merits earned - 382
Liquid assets on hand - A shade over 65 million inf. Large thanks to AE for this as common salvage was listed for 11 and selling up to 250K in some cases.
Brokest period - 22-26. Salvage prices were still down and i was trying to afford SO's.

So there it is.
#1) because, well i found it interesting that with all the doom and gloom that so called casual players are throwing around these days, i was able to quite easily play the game and make money.
#5) I made 65 mil just by playing the game. Who'd have thought...
Implied #7 - You now who i'm aiming this at, i just wont mention them coz my fireproof suit is at the cleaners..
#9) 65 Mil is enough to kit out a toon nicely, or enough capital to become an EBIL marketeer. Or both

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm curious how many months it took you to get to 50. You didn't mention it.

I didn't say I wanted all the goodies. I don't waste my time. If i get a purp, i sell it or slot it. You don't know how i use my time on the game, so to say i don't put in any effort is, well, ignorant on your part. But who could expect anything more on these forums? Err, the market forums. BUT, i don't run back and forth or sit in WW all day hoping to make a dollar, either.

For someone who generally only wanders into this forum just to castigate it, I think you only get what you expect and deserve. You come in here thinking the market is an unfair system and whine about how it works, or doesn't work in your case, and expect us to be sympathetic?

This forum is very generous to those who come here looking for help. Your attitude is just such that I don't see how you can logically expect to get anything but the responses you do here.

But I will say that at least you're good for a laugh every now and then, and I always appreciate a good laugh so you just keep it up.

You've got that part right. The best way to use them is to spend as little time as possible. Place your buy orders and go away. Come back the next day and collect your purchases, then turn them into inf.

For a while, I used to sit at the BM pretty much the whole time I logged in... hours. I didn't make much extra inf. I probably was worse off, not just for the inf and drops I wasn't earning running missions, but also because if you scroll through the market enough, you get bored and start buying rubbish that doesn't sell.

What would someone like this do with 65 million inf if they got it?

[/ QUOTE ]

Follow up post. When this Q was asked it got me thinking: Just what does 65 mil get you these days? So for the last few months i have sat the toon at the market, and with the exception of killing Deathsurge yesterday, done nothing but bid and craft. Not only did i have to buy all the recipes, but i bought all the salvage too.

[u]Results:[u]
15 x Crushing Impacts
10 x Scirocco's Dervish
2 x Touch of the Nictus
3 x Efficacy Adapter
6 x Aegis
8 x Titanium Coating
3 x Gift of the Ancients (with a still standing bid of ~2 mil on a +run speed)
2 x Red Fortune
4 x Positron's Blast
5 x Thunderstrike

Total recipes bought: 58
Approx. crafting cost: 26.95 Mil
So that left me with an average cost of recipe + the salvage to craft it of ~670K.

While doing this, i was constantly amazed at the lowball bids i placed that were filled if only i was prepared to wait a few days or so. I think the most i paid for anything was ~2.8 mil for the 2 Aegis: Defense. The lowest was 11 for a Posi's proc - I noticed there were a bunch for sale and no bids. Last 5 had all gone for over 500K. I was a little amazed i got it, so i immediately placed another bid of 11. That was filled too. 3rd bid wasnt so lucky. So basically, 2 Posi procs for a total cost of 22. I slotted 1, and still have the other.

I dont think i paid more than about 60% of the cost of any of the last 5 bids for anything, just because i didnt want it right then and there. I still have a bit to go, but i'm thinkin i got pretty good value for my money overall.
