Yup, that's what I want to do.

actually, with your stated "condition", you would actually be predisposed to being an excellent candidate for that position..... you could be "UBER TESTER"!

Oh yeah, that was the time that girl got her whatchamacallit stuck in that guys dooblickitz and then what his name did that thing with the lizards and it cleared right up.

OK, what kind of "MAGICAL FREAKEN FANTASY LAND" do you guys work in? i mean really, never an opening for a Network Engineer? what? does your network run on a handful of magical Tiki idols stolen from a LP temple? i KNOW you need to have a top rate Network guy/gal making sure all your level 2-3 needs are covered, and making sure there is enough bandwidth available for both working and gaming at the same time. No more lies, fess up, post the damn position. i would move from DC in a heart beat, my wife's career is doable anywhere in the country, i'm ready and willing. Plus, you could just deduct my monthly fee directly from my paycheck

I'm currently looking for a job and I'm fluent in C/C++...that Game Engineer position looks mighty tempting but I can't move out to Mountain View

And me? I'm happily divorced so I'm unattached and I was raised a Navy brat, so I'm used to moving around all the time... HIRE ME!

Oh wait, that Qualifications thing.... well... crap.

I might as well try anyways, I was always told to try out for jobs that you want, even if you don't meet all the qualifications, so... here's hoping.

Try as I might, I can't come up with anything but 46 each time I count.

The cameraman perhaps.

[/ QUOTE ]

The cameraman actually is another dev who opted to remain anonymous and unseen. So there's another +1

[/ QUOTE ]

Still doesn't explain how in the original The Blair Witch Project that three people can go into the woods with one video camera between the three of them and all three can be seen running in the same shot....

I'm sure the COMPANY has 50 employees, but how many of them actually work in the same cubicle farm alongside Positron, War Witch & Co.?

[/ QUOTE ]

For reference, I count 47 people in this picture, which is now outdated.

[/ QUOTE ]

That picture was taken just a few weeks ago. There might be a few new faces not shown there, but that's a pretty good representation of the people who are here now, at Paragon Studios, in Mountain View, in the same building, in the same 'cubicle farm', working on this game and not any other game.

As others have pointed out, that doesn't reflect the various GMs, tech support people, Customer support, NCSoft West biz peeps, etc etc.

Hopefully, that's clear enough.

[/ QUOTE ]

mmm, so which one is Castle? I haven't seen his face yet! Reveal yourself!

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

HIRE THIS WOMAN!

You have only to watch her videos to know she's qualified and that she'll be fabulous at creating videos that actually make people want to play this game.

If I wasn't already playing this game and watched History in the Making (5th Anniversary Commemorative Video) I would have dropped what I was doing, downloaded the game, and stayed up all night trying it. Then I would have bought it the next day.

By comparison the Captain Amazing videos made me wonder what game they were talking about. Goofy camp doesn't make gamers want to play, game play does. Goofy camp appeals to very little roleplayers, story does. Even the I'm a Hero - I'm a Villain videow, while cute, didn't sell the game. Videos should sell the game. Samuraiko delivers the goods.

Hire this woman.

This a hundred times over. Qualified applicants these days involves alot of formal educations and whatnot, which do serve a purpose. I feel that Dark Respite aka Samuraiko has one very important detail that I feel should qualify her, that being...

She delivers the goods.

I don't qualify for any of these... how can you get into the game industry if they're always looking for game industry experience????

I'd LOVE to be a QA tester for this game.

[/ QUOTE ]

The "experience required" flag is put onto job postings to limit the number of applicants who flat out would not qualify. It is not, however, a "hard" requirement -- if someone is sufficiently gifted and does very well on the various tests/interviews they can still be hired. It's happened before, it will happen again....but it is rare.

Work on Mods to popular games in your free time. This isn't "real" game development experience, in that it isn't usually a paid position, but it can teach you a lot about the why's and wherefore's of game development. This is more true if you work as part of a team, rather than solo mods.

Write Pen and Paper game designs. Whether adventures, game systems or settings, designing these can and does help you hone your skills and can be used as a sort of "portfolio" of design work in some cases.

Lastly, and best if you can get it, work as an intern at a game company. There is no better way to get past the "no experience" boundary than this.

Its like that for most jobs. When I've hired people or looked for jobs I've found its generally knowledge and drive and your desire to want the job that are greater factors to whether you'll be hired than having the exact qualifications.

I don't have a degree, yet the job I have now had a bachelors listed as a requirement. I got the job over a guy with a masters. Why? Because I showed more savvy, on the ground running smarts and wanted the job more. I also had WAY more hands on experience.

I often hear of people trying to get started in amateur game design, and my suggestion to them is: RPG Maker. It's a fantastic tool for an intro to development, without requiring any real programming skill (although it does teach a lot of the logical fundamentals), and it really highlights what makes a game good. It's definitely no replacement for actual experience, but it's a great stepping stone.

But the most important thing is to just play games. Play a variety, and look at them critically. What makes good games good? What makes bad ones bad? Why did the designers make the decisions they did? Is there something that could have been done better and still achieve the same results? Reading a lot of reviews (good, published ones) can start you thinking along these lines.

Sadly, I've been looking to get into the CG Graphics field for some time (and have had my eye on CoX since getting out of college), and the "experience required to get experience" clause is quite a deterrent, much more so the "have 1-2 shipped titles." You just don't see "have talent in these areas and a hunger for learning" very often...

It's even more frustrating when you have a dream position (like working on the CoX team would be for me), but you know you'll likely have to take baby steps to get there (knowing full well the franchise might not last forever). Oh well, a fellow can dream.

I'd so give it a go for one of the QA spots - it might not be Gaming software, but some things are universal to the "genre" - in this case software testing.

That's where an internship comes in handy. There's a surprising number of development houses in odd places; I've got one in town that I didn't know about for years. If you're not sure where to go, check out the ECA. They've got a newsletter just about every day, and they usually post job openings (they haven't for the past week, but they've been covering conferences, so I don't expect that to last). They should be able to hook you up with a developer somewhere near you.

Thanks for that, I'll have to look into it. Of course, I'm now in a position where an unpaid internship isn't feasible (already out in the workplace making money to pay the bills), so now I even have to be picky in that regard.

I've also already placed one internship under my belt, but due to an NDA I signed (TV pilot) and the subsequent tanking of the project, I have nothing to show for 3 months of work. The studio doesn't even do CG work anymore :|

I was staring at the forum mod position everyday for awhile, but it vanished before I was out of school. I thought it'd be a nice starting spot for getting noticed for the higher jobs.

I was fortunate enough to have my highschool purchase and start classes around XSI, so that was amazing. I don't think many people trying to get started can say they have experience with that program .
