Quality of Life Suggestion

This is just a mock up of a few things others and myself have wanted added to the character selection screen for awhile. And since I was bored and always enjoyed making mock ups for game UI since I had to do it in college for the game I made, I made one lol.

I don’t think it’s anything revolutionary, and I’m sure the UI wizards they have can come up with something better. I just used the only available empty space on screen. Because of pixilation I had to make the font a little larger then what could be used in game so it looks kind of crowded on the mock up, but it could be fixed in game. And the window position would probably need to be changed for people who run at lower resolution since that space wouldn’t be there for them.

I think it would work best as a toggle window hence the details button so you can toggle it on or off depending on whether or not you wanted to see the info. I know I would love to be able to see a lot of the info I added without the need to log in every character one at a time. IDK how hard it would be tech wise for the DEV's to add that info but it would be nice imho.

Any who that’s it. Just thought I would post it and let the forum sharks rip it apart as I know they love fresh content to rip apart.

Edit: lol just noticed i have Black Market and not Went Worths. I originally had a villain set there but then i picked a dif char because i liked the costume better lol. Forgot to change it.

----------------------------------------------------------

I have gotten a few PM's on how i made it look just like in game so i thought i would add how i made it. If it breaks any forum rules sorry i didn't know.

I used Photoshop, but only because it’s the program I learnt how to use in college. Any photo editing program that has layers would work for all it takes to do.

1. To make your own just go to the character log in screen and hit the screen cap button on your keyboard. Then paste it into Photoshop.

2. Select one of the buttons using the selection tool then use the eraser to erase all the fluff around it until it is just the button left on the layer. Using the selection tool erase the text in the button, then use the eyedropper tool to select the button’s colour and past it into the deleted area.

3. For the window just open the store option at the character selection screen and take another screen cap. Then do the same steps as in step 2 to erase all the surrounding background colours. And this time make sure you delete the center area as well so that all that’s left is the blue skeletal outline of the window.

4. Once the window has been completely hollowed out so that only the border outline is visible copy that layer. With the bottom layer selected fill the inside of the hollowed out border with pure black. Set that layers opacity to whatever you want then merge the two layers.

5.For the font I Googled around to see if there was COH font but the best one I could find was something called “Red Circle” http://www.1001freefonts.com/redcircle.php . Once it’s installed (Vista users simply extract the font file and right click and select install. XP/98/95 users simply copy the extracted file to C:\Windows\Fonts then it should be available to use. Mac user’s idk lol I don’t use a Mac so you will need to Google.) Simple select the font and create a text field using the text tool. Then fill in the info as you wish.

That’s it. Pretty simple to do, and not a lot of magic photo editing voodoo was involved...unless you count the goat I always sacrifice before doing any 3D modeling or photo editing work. I swear the programs never crash now that I started doing it! Lol Hope it helped.

Here is the Link to the .psd i used in case anyone wants it. It was made with CS3 so compatibility might be a problem sorry if it is. Let me know if the link doesn't work i haven't used the linked hosting site in a long time so it may not upload correctly.

Beautiful, I love it. Heartily agree that it would be nice to have all that data available from the selection screen. Can't list the number of times I've logged in just to figure out how much inf a character has. Especially like the costume change option, since I usually like my latest costume more than my original

I'm reasonably sure that a large amount of this is possible (just load the info from the character) but not particularly feasible thanks to the additional load time. Depending on how some of the systems are implemented, it may not even be possible for some of those features to operate without being fully logged in (re: friends tab, tickets, merits, etc.).

That's actually somewhat impressive, but I'd probably rather have the local friends in the character's detail box, and have a separate detail box for global friends.

ya i just sat there and made a mental list of all the things a player might want to know about but would have to log in to see. I'm sure there is a lot more i didn't think of, but for me it was the how much money a char has and if they have items on WW/BM that are about to expire. I cant begin to tell you how much awesome stuff i lost b/c i forgot i had them on an alt i never played much.

ya i at the time i made the pic i forgot about local friends lol. The few people i play with i just global because I'm the type of player who cycles their alts. I play one for a few hours, then move to next. So it can be weeks sometimes b4 i play it again. Forgot not everyone plays like that lol

That's a Fantastic idea, and I encourage the Devs to implement it, post haste!

This is amazing. You should submit it to CoH, I would definitely love something that used in the game load screen.

sorry looked to much like a giant wall of text without

It's cool, I just mean cut the number of dashes in like half. Gets the same effect, and doesn't spread the forum way the hell to the right of the screen

I actually doubt I'd worry about local - most of the ones I watch are in global but that list is long enough that I think I'd only want the "live" ones showing.

All in all, though, looks impressive.

Agreed. I like the idea, and you did a wonderful job of articulating it through a photo. Much easier than trying to describe it.

But, the downside, as stated above, is that some of that information just may not be available at the character select screen. From experience of working in cross server environments, some information isn't available until you log in to that server. And while they may be able to bring us that information, it could come at a huge overhead to the login portion of the game, not to mention that it could cause lag for those already in game if everyone constantly hit only the login screen just to see what the stats of the character are.

ya the tech side of it was always a concern in my head while i was making it. But one work around i was thinking of is when ever you log off a character a small text file is saved on your computer. In the file it would keep track of what your settings where when you logged on last and just display them on the menu for you. It wouldn't be perfect but that way you wouldn't have to worry about overloading the system because it would just be looking at a file on your hard drive.

IDK how the friends list works but i wouldn't think it would be hard to just have it load the one time. Would work for global friends i guess but might run into a problem with local.

IDK lol here's hoping i DEV pops in and lets us know if it would be possible, or if it would be a lot of work/impossible..

That might work but it would require that you log in and out of that character, which isn't too far out of the question honestly. That's actually a nice work around, though it could be easy to screw around with if it's just a locally saved file (re: you could prank a friend by tweaking their inf to be 0 when they really have 2 billion, or whatever).

Global friends would probably be the easiest to implement. It would probably just require altering when and how your account logs in to the global chat server. Doing it with the normal friends list would be a bit funky because, afaik, that list is stored directly on the character.

The thing I like best is that it's optional!

So if you know who you want to play, no delay waiting for the select screen to talk to the server.

Saving an info file when you log out is a good idea for working around the server talk.

I'd put an "as of" date in the details, though. Because if I didn't play a character for a while, logged in and got some significant stuff on him, then crashed out or something that prevented the update, I could tell from the date that the information wasn't current.

This idea has to be an exploit....
It's just WAY too awesome otherwise!!

I love it!!!

Although this feature means the Devs would possibly have to change the login procedure at the very least to expose more information than is already exposed, I'm all for it and have been wanting this since Day 1.

If it's doable, that would be really cool to be able to get all that information on the character load screen.

I'd be happy if it were optional. I really don't need to, or care to know anything about the BM before I log in, since I hardly ever use it. Looking up salvage is quite welcome though, for those moments of "Which one is holding that blasted Impervium!?"
