I forgot one important note there -- make sure the room you choose can accept defensive items or the slow field is a no-go.

OK - here's something that is kinda big, but only fills one end of the room, so I'm posting it here instead of in the Cool Rooms thread:

Inventions Laboratory Platform

Here's an idea. Try burying the invention cart inside the desk on the platform so the screen looks like it's on the desk. I don't know if it'll line up right (or if it does, if it's still clickable runtime) but that would be pretty cool.

I've been doing a lot of experiments with this "burying" idea.

I luv base building and creating custom items for my base. This thread has some really kool custom objects. Kudos to all the creators. I have a gallery just for custom objects in my SG website. Check it on the gallery section. I am currently redoing the base post i13 so alot of it is still under construction.

Check it out and let me know what you guys think!

In the thread "Water in the base", there are links to one or more waterfalls - but they have been broken in the forum update. What I have found by searching is just the Electron Imager things, which look more like motion-activated sinks than waterfalls, though I have to admit they are fine for small fountain effects. Is there anything better out there that I just haven't found yet?

I did see a picture somewhere in the coolest room thread that had a vaguely waterfall-looking construct that appeared to be made using the tech light in a variety of positions and partial concealment within other things. It was too bright, but with the tech lights I suppose there is no way around that... and in the picture it was in the background, behind other things that helped keep it from being too obnoxious. However, it *was* in the background, not mentioned in the post, and not commented on in the follow ups. Does anyone know what this was and how such a thing is built?

I've been trying my own take on a waterfall using the glass panels and Jacob's ladders in various sizes and positions (imbedded in the glass seems to be best so far, at different heights of course) to give a moving-water ripple effect, but as yet have not gotten a look I like. It does show promise, though, and with more time and no doubt lots of lighting tweaks I think I'll be able to get something adequate this way. Put rock of some sort around and behind it (and through in places for taller waterfalls, to conceal the logo - or place a lamp so it looks like the logo is being projected onto the water, I suppose), probably with a little indirect lighting behind the glass and I think you'd get something passable.

Unfortunately I don't have time to work on it this weekend, but I don't have to be the first to build one so I thought I'd post the idea with my questions. Maybe one of you will find this a useful inspiration.

I like how you use the tech units for water. Are you going to change the room lighting?

Most definitely. When the room is finished, I'll post in the "rooms" thread. This was just to show what I've done with certain items.

*sigh*
I know it looks like "water", but I was hoping for more of a "beer vat" or "fountain tap" impression.

This appears to be the tread for this sort of thing.

I used this thread and others for inspiration, and added a few things of my own.

Air Hockey Table

Bowling Lanes

DDH Machine Dance Dance Hero, that is.

Recluse's Claw Game You can kinda see the prizes...

Exercise area Ring, mats, stationary bike, free weights, and hidden in the back is punching bags.

Loved your air hockey table! Great job on all your rooms, looks great.

I'm just getting started on the real work of building, having bought about two million prestige so far and earned about 750k more. The plan is to get most of the functionality in (all the teleporters, a couple of med stations) and have most of the decorating done in the existing areas before I start inviting people. That leaves plenty of room for growth for the future: finishing the medical facilities, adding and furnishing workshops and holodeck/illusion chambers where members can experiment with base design, coming up with some sort of meeting area, maybe living areas, who knows what all. I think that's important, as it helps people feel they've been a part of building the group but they get to start out with useful and (hopefully) attractive stuff already in place.

The base will be a mix of arcane and tech, though aside from a little bit of computer and lighting here and there in arcane areas it will be consistent within a room. I'm beginning with the large teleport room and the arcane control room. I figured I'd post my initial bits, see what suggestions come of it - and you may see something that gives you ideas.

First, in the arcane control room, my initial attempt at a scrying pool:

The magic axis (which has a visible bottom) rests on top of a pair of stelae, while a slow field floated over an arcane floor piece (idea found in these forums, thank you very much) forms the pool. I've placed a floor torch and crystal ball stand in the pool, though I am not that happy with it and will probably swap them out for something else. I will be putting something on top of the stelae, probably another pair of stelae. Around the pool will be seating and study area, while the far right will be a two-floor 'restricted' section of library (bookshelf auxiliaries) only accessible via teleportation. I will post again when I have more of the room 'done', but I'll be checking here for suggestions before I continue working on it.

Then, in the teleport room, a sort of sketched-out telepad enclosure:

The nuisance factor here is that the arcane teleporters are triangles. Enclosing two of the three sides properly requires lots of angle work and there are some problems filling in overhead and behind the angled arcane eye. I'm going to have to experiment with something similar involving much easier right angles and see how that works out. I also want to change the beacons, I think they should go on the stelae. I prefer the tech beacons, so I show those - the functioning arcane beacons are hidden behind. The telepad itself is sunk into the floor a step, so the arcane floor piece covers it.

The room itself will be divided into four sections. The entrance and infirmary doorways connect to the same space in the northeast corner of the room, and the telepads will line a diagonal path towards the southwest. Since the telepads are a bit smaller than a map square and will be slightly overlapped that will leave almost a full square open in the southwest corner. It will open to the northwest section (the print library) and the southeast section (the online library). Following the theme here, the print library leads to the arcane control room and the online library leads to the tech control room. If there is room the southwest corner will have the stairs to a lounge area above 'teleport row', otherwise there will be a set in each library.

Again, I will post when I am satisfied with the telepad enclosure, but that will wait until after the control room.

Ok, so here is a vault I built for a SG on Freedom.

Trying to get the vault door at that angle was hard, had to play with wall torches and cubicles for like an hour.

and it turned out great, cool look with the glass enclosures too.

Heheh, I did something like that in my base, I'll have to post pictures.

I've completed my control room, so here is the scrying pool I posted an initial try at before. This may be tweaked a little, I'm still not sure about having the Ouro pillar in it so that and the little ramp leading out to it may go away eventually.

I was originally going to have two Lay Taps in my power room, with a bridge over them, but I've decided against that and am rebuilding the room. You may be interested in the bridge, however. I've turned up the lights in these pictures so details are more visible.

The bridge is made from carved stone tables, two across, with square altars at the top; both from the Arcane tab. The wood railing is highback chairs with highback benches at the top - I expect I'll be using these along the second floor in my teleport room. It's a bit steep here given that I was crossing over a Ley Tap and didn't want to make it too wide. Under other circumstances I'd make the steps two or three units wide. The tables and altars do not have visible bottoms, which could be a problem in places. Here I didn't expect people to normally go hopping around inside the Ley Tap so I didn't care.

Wait... Cthulhufan...

HOW DID YOU TURN AN OBJECT ONLY 45 degrees?!

Oh, and Crimson demands you play this arc-> Twisted Knives (MA Arc #397769)

It's a wall item - you can rotate them using torches or the round lights (try to place the wall item on the light - as you move the mouse around, the item will pivot). Using cubicles or banners to move them out from the wall, you can hang wall items in lots of ways.

I like it a lot. Have always been a fan of your work because you’re great with dimension from all angels.

Thank you - always nice to get a compliment. So I might as well fish for more, right? I've finally gotten to work on my main teleport room - the telepads themselves are done, though I still need to put filler around them to block off nooks and crannies. Once that is done, I'll be putting a roof over top, making the row of teleporters into a tunnel. The floor above will be something of a lounge area, the larger open side will be a library, and the smaller open side will be a bit of storage with computers for general use.

I had hoped to get more of a 45-degree angle for the row, but with triangular telepads that wouldn't have worked out so well.

Overhead view of the row of teleporters:

A view down the row:

And an individual telepad, without filler (very close to what I'd come up with before, really):

Correct, first I placed a cubicle then attached a wall torch to it (the cubicle walls act like real walls). Then I removed the cubicle. The wall torch's arms can be used to angle other wall items off of it if placed just so. I actually had to place several wall torches together to get the angle just right and that took some doing but in the end it worked out.
