Followup:
Tried to create a new hero on Infinity, same crashing problem.
Followup #2: Possibly a coincidence, possibly not. I went into CCC (using a Radeon HD4870 video card with Cat 9.1 drivers) and changed the Catalyst A.I. setting from Advanced to Standard, and have access to all my characters again.

Tried this myself, it seems to work so far. Just managed to log into a character that was crashing upon login before.

This, in my case, seems to have been an issue with an older version of Skype and City of not playing well together. I updated Skype to the current version and this issue seems to have disappeared. I hope this information helps out.
i play both virtue and freedom servers and both are full of characters, so far 2 toons in virtue are ok and a couple more toons in freedom works fine, cept mentioned below.

When do you crash:in teams or solo, inside missions, going to missions, buying enhancements, standing, flying, just about every 30 minutes maybe more.

the game freezes for a second or two then goes black and a window pops up saying "city of heroes is not responding". its happening on my new computer has vista in it, while my old pc has windows xp and works just fine. i dont know if its a vista problem or not, im just assuming, regards seeing vista this and vista that in the forums and in-game.

Edit: adding more toons.
Edit2: Found out that I don't have to move, just stand still and wait, and the toon will crash, and never be able to login again.
Edit3: Problem solved! Found that it was due to a collision of ingame anisotropic settings and driver level settings.
Setting Anisotropic filtering in game to 16x, when nvidia control panel has a high setting as well and with override application settings will cause the character to crash on loading map screen.
Any and all spelling, grammar and logic errors are intentional so this post will blend seamlessly into the Internet

Fired up the game today.
I've tried full screen (what it was before), and forced it to windowed with TweakCoh. All the characters I've tried so far crash on attempting to log in, I don't have the patience for any more tonight:
Server: Pinnacle
Hero: King Lobster
Villain: Endrenor, Psifreeze, Mud Dragon, Nebula Seed, Ninstormu
When I crash: After character selection screen, when trying to load the initial zone.
I tried turning all the settings down with TweakCOH (since I can't get into the game to change them), and nothing seems to help. I suspect I may have updated my graphics drivers since last I played.
Using a GeForce 9600GT with Nvidia driver version 6.14.11.8122 dated 1/14/09.
I've never had a problem like this before, nor have I ever tried a version of the drivers that caused the game to crash this bad. I can't roll back because another game I play needs the newer ones.

PLEASE fix this! I can't play the game because all my characters now crash upon logging in. I am not gonna renew if this isn't fixed when my renew date comes up. Why pay for a game I can't play? Seriously, this is annoying. The valentines day patch seems to have broken the game in the worst way I can imagine.

The game crashing on you in this fashion is most likely due to a graphic driver issue on your computer. I am guessing the characters who crash, or the regions they are in, have textures that your video card is choking on. I advise updating to the latest drivers for your video card, or if you have done this and the crashing began AFTER you updated, roll back to the previous version.
If that doesn't work, I would suggest doing a verify of your game client files. But nine times out of ten issues like this are driver related.

NVIDIA released 182.08 version of Forceware on March 3rd. Perhaps try upgrading to the latest drivers?

I get the "Lost connection to mapserver" on a couple of my characters, completely at random. Sometimes right when I log in sometimes after about 10 minutes. The other night I received this message 7 times in an hour period, finally I just gave up playing that character. This just started happening about a week ago. I've been playing this gave for over a year now and never had this problem. I updated my driver to the new NVIDIA 182.08 with no difference. This does not affect all my characters. The ones it does affect are unplayable.

Well after a weeks worth of emailing back and forth with tech support and testing, I finally figured out what the problem was. It was my firewall on Vista! I haven't had a problem with COH in the year+ I've been playing, until last week. I did do a microsoft update before this so I guess it is something in the update. Tech had me turn my firewall completely off to see if that helped and YES it does. Apparently excluding the COH program from the firewall is not enough anymore.
Hope this helps others with the "lost connection to mapserver".

I finally had time to update to that version...now it won't even try to load zones, just sits there after you click a character. Pretttty much forever.
Just did a full file verify. Tried running it in a smaller window...turned off multi-monitor support (which always worked before)..now it seems to work.
Re-enabled second monitor, quit game, restarted and all problems are back.
So...some kind of problem with Nvidia + game + dual monitor support? (which used to work fine...).

Earlier today it was only whenever I clicked on npc "stores" or tried to costume change and sometimes midfight, now it crashes about 2 minutes after I've logged into Paragon. Please help!

I can't log in any of my toons in Cap Au Diable on Protector, but I can log them on in mercy fine.

When do you crash: Outdoor traveling to missions, in instansted missions, in MA missions. I has been doing this since I14 but thought it was me. I get a loud humming sound and the computer freezes up, I have to do a hard reboot.

Does it affect only characters in one or more SG's or VG's: dunno, I haven't played any other alt...Edit, tried my main, after about 10 minutes the game froze on me, pretty much the same as on Pain Tech.

Hero side all characters crash upon login during the load screan
Villain side, characters are initially playable. It's only after I try entering a mission or a different zone that they start to crash.

I am having this exact problem as well. I was able to sign in all my characters without problem yesterday. Tonight, I can't do so. Blearg.
