NCsoft Expands Retail Presence with New Game Cards in Stores across North America

Target, Best Buy and Rite Aid to sell cards for popular NCsoft online games

NCsoft®, the world's leading developer and publisher of online computer games, is teaming up with InComm, a technology firm that develops markets and distributes stored-value gift and prepaid products, to bring many of NCsoft's popular games to consumers on prepaid Game Cards.

Some of the top retailers in North America are participating in the new retail initiative that will include City of Heroes®, Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa® and Exteel™. Target, Best Buy and Rite Aid will be the first stores to offer the NCsoft Game Cards.

"This is a great opportunity for NCsoft to grow its expanding portfolio of triple-A massively multiplayer games beyond traditional retail channels," said Lisa Bell-Cabrera, vice president of sales for NCsoft's North American business. "Of course, we think this is a huge value to our customers. The InComm cards provide an incredibly convenient way for our customers to access our games and by using the cards, they'll be getting some bonus items that will enhance their game play experience."

The City of Heroes cards will provide purchasers with an exclusive in-game jet pack in addition to a convenient way to download and play the comic-book inspired online computer game without requiring a credit card. The City of Heroes Game Cards will retail for US$20 and come with 30 days of game play.

Tabula Rasa Game Cards will retail for US$14.95 and will be available exclusively at Best Buy stores. Those who purchase the Tabula Rasa Game Card will get an exclusive in-game rocket. Like the City of Heroes card, the Tabula Rasa card provides a handy method for downloading the client and includes 30 days of game play.

Those who enjoy the fast-paced action of fighting robots on futuristic battlegrounds can purchase the new Exteel Game Cards at participating retailers. The cards will provide buyers with NCcoin™, NCsoft's new micro-transaction system that allows customers to use real-world money to purchase in-game items and upgrades. The Exteel card will include 1,000 NCcoin, plus 200 bonus NCcoin, to purchase more powerful weapons, skills and parts for your fighting Mechanaught. Exteel is a free-to-download and free-to-play game. The Exteel Game Card retails for US$10.

"The prepaid card market continues to grow year over year," said Brooks Smith, InComm President and CEO. "We are thrilled to have one of the leading MMO publishers as an addition to our growing portfolio of prepaid game cards. With its limited packaging, the InComm card provides consumers with a 'green' alternative to their game purchases, plus it adds flexibility and other offerings that consumers can appreciate."

City of Heroes and Exteel Game Cards will be available at Target stores the weekend of July 26. City of Heroes, Exteel and Tabula Rasa cards will be available at Best Buy beginning August 3 and Rite Aid will begin offering City of Heroes cards on September 3. Other games and retailers are expected to be announced in the near future.

To activate their prepaid cards, NCsoft gamers simply purchase a Game Card, scratch off the serial number on the back of the card and activate their new game on http://www.PlayNC.com/us/gamecard/.

I'm curious about the jetpack. How does it function? Is it similar to the Raptor Pack, or the GvE jump-jet with a new skin?

Lighthouse, any chance of you clarifying something?

Ive read that the in-game jet pack lasts on 30 days.

Is it:

The 30 days is for the global account; someone buys the card, applies it and for 30 days all their characters have the jet pack. At the end of 30 days, it vanishes and never returns even on newly created characters made after the 30 days lapses.

Or

Is the jet pack on each character individually for 30 days; someone buys the card applys it, likes the game, pays for a few months. Three months from applying the card they make a new character and that new character has the jet pack for 30 days.

I currently assume it's the first one (30 days global for the ingame item).

I ask because this is a really good way to get friends who aren't in the game into it and I'd like to be able to give them good information on the item as a selling point.

Is this a brand new, never before seen jet pack or one of the existing jet packs currently in the game? Also is it a temporary power or something we can use in perpetuity like the jump pack? I don't mind paying the extra $5 for a new permanent jet pack!

If I had to guess I would assume its just like the Jingle Jet, lapses in 30 days, just like the card. Might just be for one charcter of your choice though. Not all your characters.

I agree. We need more info.

Great news, but when can we expect more then a 60 day time card, would love to be able to purchase a 6 month to a year time card.

Okay, is this an admission that CoH is a minor league player (albeit the top tier of the minor leagues), or is there some other connotation I am missing beyond baseball terms here?

Gotta love the executives and marketing types that use industry jargon in our press releases Triple A, or AAA, games are generally ones that shoot for the stars or to raise the bar in gaming. In other words: the very best.

Cool and all, but LH, is there a plan to sell CoX cards for just 15.00 a month? Will the Tabula Cards work on a CoH account too?

Some people (like me) would prefer to pay with game cards, but the extra 5.00 a month for the jet doesn't justify the expense to me.

Especially on the Villain side, as there are repeatable missions to get a Temp flight pack in game already.

All NC cards work on all NC products, that's the point of having removed the specific games to them. They're one product. If you apply them to any of the given games, the effects will differ based on what each game needs. (So we get the jet, the other one gets coin, etc.)

You want the regular time cards.

THESE ARE NOT TIME CARDS.

They give a full copy of the game, plus a 30day realtime temp power to the account using a rocket pack that was in the korean version of the game.

Well, you could use these cards for time on your account. However, they are $20. In essence you get the game + the jetpack for $5 and 30 days of game time for $15 (if you want to look at it that way).

But yeah, if what you want is game time, then pick up a NCsoft game time card that works for any of our games.

Yep, and as such, there's very little reason (imho, absolutely no reason, but others might disagree) for current subscribers to get one of these cards. Yes, you can apply one to your account (once) and get a month of play (for $5 more than you would normally pay) and a 30-day jetpack, but that's pretty pointless. In the thread that I (and Obsidius) linked to, it was stated that you can only use one of these cards on your account, so there's no infinitely renewable jet pack, even if you were willing to pay the extra $5 a month.

These cards are aimed at new subscribers, not existing ones.

EDIT: According to Niv's post, it looks like you CAN apply more than one of these cards to your account, so you could essentially pay the $5 extra every month for a permanent jetpack. Still don't think it'd be worth it, but it might be to some people.

Not true, Zekiran. These are game cards - the code given is like the GvE code, etc.

For plain time, you still want the simple "PlayNC" branded cards.

Since you're here, LH... in the other thread it was stated that you can only use ONE of these cards on an existing account. Is this still true? Or would you be able to add a new card to your account every month to renew the jet pack and get the 30 days from it?

Yes, you can add one of these cards to your account every month for the 30 day jet pack and 30 days of game time. You would not want to stack codes (ie: use 3 codes for 3 months of game time and 3 months of jet pack time); as the game will only see one code at a time.

Cool. I was asking because in that other thread Zombie_Man listed some info on these cards which Lighthouse had said was "pretty much correct," and part of that info was that you could only apply one of these cards to your account once. I'm guessing that should have said "once a month" then.
