This is going to ROCK!

I doubt I stand a snowball's chance in hell of even placing in the top three, but I'm going to try!

IMO Demorecording actually is "in-game". It is just the game running with a different set of arguments.

[/ QUOTE ]

Creating a video using the game engine is part of the Machinima definition.

So, everyone BUT DR can use demorecord.......... /e plot

But, ya, I would really like a clarification on to the whole violence and use only in game material.......

Hey, I didn't even WIN the last video contest, so everyone has to gang up on Leandro!

Re: the violence thing - violence (to some degree) is part of the scope of the game. I think it's more about not messing with the game to have characters going above and beyond the game's normal constraints (this is not, after all, Grand Theft Auto).

What I really want is an answer to the music thing.

One of my questions is the same as Star_Dancer's:

Are we allowed to use either a) royalty-free music, or b) music that we have received copyright permission to use?

[/ QUOTE ]

Somewhere in the rules, it states that the "Sponser" (GT tv) will here after own all rights to said video. So if whoever you got that music from, they would no longer hold any rights to that song, get any royalties from, or be able to reproduce it as their own without legal ramifications from "Sponser". Also stated within, you wont be able to sue "Sponser" to get the rights back for that material.

So, you can use it, as long as the artist(s) are willing to part with that song forever.

*this comes from 10 years in a band dealing with copyright and trademark laws for samples, giving our music to event announcements as a background theme, cover tunes, and whatnot.

So no Creative Commons music or royalty free music?

That bites...

PS - Incidentally, I just sent an email to GameTrailers asking them for clarification on the music stuff. Let's see if we get an answer...

You can always ask an artist to use or have them make you something that you will be able to use. Just give them credit. Free name plugging FTW!!!

Yeah, especially if they show it on MTV or some such. But I think the rules state that they can edit out any part they want, which I assume would also mean the credits. Better make the credits really cool so they don't want to edit them out, eh?

Having a Gametrailers, MTV, and/or NCSoft lawyer pop in and help us out would sure be nice.

Has Gametrailers done one of these before? I go to that site pretty often anyway and I can't remember one but I wouldn't be surprised if I forgot.

Sorry gang the rules aren't in our court. The contest is hosted by Toyota and Gametrailers.com so they will be your rule source and place to go for clarification.

I hope that helps, at least a little.

LOL lame.

And Matrix Online wants their name back. All 12 subscribers told me so.

The prize is a gas guzzler in the era of $4/gallon gas. Is that winning, or losing?

The upside? We're gonna get lots of CoX machinima out of this. So the real winner is us CoX machinima fans.

And I love little technical things like this....

On the Gametrailers site contest description: Limit 1 entry per person.

In the actual legal rules: Limit one (1) entry per person per day during the Entry Period, as long as you use a different Video for each such entry.

It's odd...usually I don't find lawyers a big fan of cut-and-paste.

I guess I will just use what ever is part of the game experience like Mayhem Missions to some extent till we find out for sure.

The irony of the grand prize is that you'll probably never have time to enjoy your CoX account if you're enjoying the consoles and the car.

I'm just glad to see a GOOD Car company that actually makes cars in this country is advertising or promoting or partnering or whatever-it-is with this game. That's pretty cool. I hope whatever they get out of it is intelligent or atleast Viral instead of just plain confusing or 'too LinkinPark'ish like every single "professional" car commercial I've seen on TV lately.

Toyotas... they're just like that crazy scrapper that out-lives the rest of your PuG.

uh, did anyone else read the official rules? The video on the site doesn't even follow the rules.
Listen to this!
Part 3 section a
"... any....violence..."
"... any display of physical injury, death or property damage or conduct or activity that could cause physical injury or property damage or that is reasonably likely to do so..."
"...appears to display, encourages or implies that any activity or conduct that is otherwise unacceptable in reality, has been or could have been involved..."

I don't even need to delve deeper.

We are talking about a contest showing our "dark side" that has to do with a game about comic book violence....or did I miss something here?

I mean...the teaser spot shows "violence", "physical injury", "death" (sure doesn't look like that guys being arrested to me!), "implies....conduct that is otherwise unacceptable in reality" (or is joining a street gang considered legal at this point?).
I guess any use of mayhem missions are out as they show damage to property...
I'm not sure how being "dark side" in anyway is "acceptable in reality"...oh, wait...I do see that everyday practically...so maybe it is...but out and out supervilliany I'm assuming...well, maybe not...I've seen that considered acceptable too...
...so as long as it has to do with conspiracies..I guess it's okay...just not talk about bank robbing or flat out...or kidnapping...or....I guess maybe conspiracies are the only thing that is considered "darkside" but acceptable?
Meh....well...I guess we can do something with that...just have to make sure no one is getting attacked in the background while characters talk about conspiracies?
....I guess it is all a Nemsis plot after all...(except on weekend when they don't have enough staff on hand to cover everything...)

It means above and beyond the normal scope of the game.

Heroes beating up villains is fine.
Heroes throwing children out the window is not.

Did they fix or change the means to record ingame video? If not, can someone relist the method in which to do so?

Many of us prefer FRAPS, but I'll redirect you to here for a listing of what others use for recording and editing.

So it's OK as long as it's part of the game. Phew.

[/ QUOTE ]

I wouldn't make that assumption, IMO. I'd ask for clarification. Here's why:

1) Rules excerpt that I didn't bother quoting the first time: "With the exception of those elements which are contained within the Selected Games and incorporated into your Video, your Video must NOT contain:
"

The word "elements", as used earlier in the rules, was a reference to graphical elements, not gameplay elements. It MIGHT refer to gameplay elements in this context, but it could as easily refer (as I read it initially) to the graphical elements referenced previously.

2) The list of prohibitions was not complete. It was just the most egregrious. For instance, the first two that I didn't list:

<ul type="square">[*] any dialogue or vocal effects from the Selected Game;
[*] any content which endorses or condones illegal drug use or alcohol abuse;[/list]
We don't have any recorded dialogue in the game, but if we did, it would be forbidden desipite being "a part of the game". Likewise, we have Superadyne junkies and dealers, and we have beer mug emotes, bars, and other alcohol-related elements that would get your film disqualified despite being "part of the game".

I really hope Zloth is right. I just would advise erring on the side of caution until Lighthouse or another official person gives a clarification. Contest rules judges are notoriously picky due to all of the legal ramifications of doing it wrong. If you're questionable, you're disqualified.

If it says "No destruction of property", I'd say that setting it in a mayhem mission is a likely to raise an eyebrow at the judges' table.

They made a mistake it's not that you have to be a US citizen but that you have to be a US citizen and lawyer to enter the contest.

oh. crap. i might have to enter this. crap. damnit.
