Discussion: The Rikti Return!

*sigh* And here come the Rikti again for a whole week at the start of August to interfere with my game again.

Sick.
Of.
Invasions.

I wish it were one weekend rather than one week. A week's way too long.

Oh, well. Makes a good excuse to go play something else instead for that week. Breaks are good.

And I'm going to basically disagree with everything you said. I love invasions. I love that they come back and that they last a week. They break up the monotony of mission-mission-mission. I look forward to playing the invasions week -- free experience, free prestige, free influence, free badges. There's very little there that I don't like, even if it takes over one single zone for all of 10 minutes every few hours.

I'll chime in as another big fan of the invasions.

what I don't understand is how they so adversely affect someone's gamplay that they would have to log off for the week. I guess it would affect people who have hunt missions, or just like to street sweep?

With the last invasion I couldn't get my events channel working right until they were almost over, so if I wanted to participate in beating back an invasion, I had to either work really hard to find them, or get lucky. 95% of the time though I played as if there were no invasions.

Yay! Invasions are a'comin' and my new graphics card and alts from Double XP weekend will be here to meet them! It's fun to run from zone to zone and see who else is doing the same, there gets to be a crowd of regulars!

Some days I just wake up cranky. Today might be one of those days...

Please, if you're going to keep having these stupid things, could you please add some damaged buildings and craters to all the zones that get hit.

Please?

It would make the continued invasions feel a lot less stupid.

Aw, that would insult the work of those FINE Paragon City maintenance droids that scour the city to make sure that everything is damage-free. You know, the ones that only come out for about an hour or so every weekday morning when all of the servers are off-line.

(note: all sarcasm intended)

BTW, you're not the only one that suggested that we start to see some signs of invasion damage.

I feel like these invasions happen too often. I feel like they go on way, way too long. But more importantly, this long after issue 10, I feel like they happen way, way too pointlessly. Part of me really just can't believe that week-long invasions are happening eleven months after tens of thousands of us have earned the "Save the World" badge for ending the Second Rikti War.

[/ QUOTE ]

The fact we're still fighting Rikti a year after the second war allegedly ended? Sounds vaguely familiar to current real world events.

Feels like a political statement, if you ask me.

While I am a relative newbie to the CoX community I'm one that likes the invasions. I am on at odd hours and often not for extended periods so the invasions are often the best chance for me to team up and kick some pixelated kesters! Although being the lone guardian at 4 am DOES make it challenging.

So how do I know where the invasion forces are going to land again? This is a serious question, I don't get it. Some chat channel? Which one?

Actually, from the information you get through a couple of different avenues, Rikti would theoretically taste like pork. So you could argue about it being luau time...

Another question: When the Rikti invade a low-traffic server such as Victory, can they actually suceed and stick around for a while or do they just leave if they are not defeated? If so, after how long?

The general broadcast chat channel will give a special warning from the Vanguard when the Rikti are about to invade in a certain area. The first warning will give you five minutes to decide if you want to take cover or stay and fight.

The second warning is to let you know the Rikti have invaded that area. But if you're already in the area, you'll know as well because the sky will turn a sickly brown color as the Rikti mothership is overhead (hidden in the clouds). You'll also know they're here because suddenly all non-combatants will have disappeared (they head for the shelter). The field around the War Walls will also diminish before the bomb ships arrive.

Don't worry about the mothership. You won't be able to reach it even with a flight-power. Leave that to the Vanguard. You'll have plenty to worry about closer to the ground, and I do suggest you stay close to the ground when it happens. If you get too close to one of those bomb ships it WILL attack you directly.

Bomb ships drop bombs first, then the troops will transport in. The more people in any given area, the more troops you'll have to fight. Take it from me... you WANT to be on a team when that happens!

You'll know the battle is done when the War Walls start to go back to full power. The sky will return to normal and the Rikti ground forces will be teleported back up. Then you'll get the all-clear from the Vanguard.

The Rikti never really succeed in any given area. The Vanguard have more powerful weapons at its disposal. Unfortunately they cannot stop the damage that the Rikti cause on the ground during that time. That's why we're needed to hold the line and stop the Rikti.

Once the Rikti mothership is forced out of the area, they transport all of their soldiers and toys back up so that we can't use them like we've been doing for the past six years since the first Invasion.

Too often these ships hover over the Hospital, downing hero after hero who is exiting from being killed just 30 seconds ago.

This is true in the extreme in Skyway, where their flight path take them directly over the hospital.

Edit: By the way, did anyone else have a problem with the bombs disappearing and re-appearing? This happened to every bomb we attacked last night in Cap Au, usually when the bombs were at about half-health, requiring them to be re-targeted when they came back.

I've had it happen several times today, it seems to have something to do with a Stalker ASing the bomb. The times it happened to mem, a Stalker had ASed the bomb directly prior to it happening. I think the stalker's AS had some oddball effect on the bomb target.

Can anyone verify a Stalker AS prior to the bomb vanishing (and it appears to drop back down from the top of the screen when it reappears).

Incorrect, unless it's been changed since the first live invasions last year. They do give experience and influence, but not much more than your average giant monster, and most people seem to believe fighting those is a waste of time. Further, the Dropships move fast, can't be slowed, hit extremely hard, require around 30 or so characters to bring one down, and essentially require you to have a flight power and preferably ranged attacks in order to even scratch them.

The bottom line is that while they do give rewards, the rewards aren't that impressive. The only real reason to fight one is to enjoy doing it. I know that Liberty's Dropship raid last year was the most fun thing I've ever done in this game.

I can verify this. It happened to my stalker several times last in Cap. Only an actual AS causes the problem. Regular attacks from Hide work fine.

This doesn't have anything to do with Stalkers/Hide/AS. It happens when the server lag increases, both red side and blue side. What you're seeing is the bomb animation being replaced by a new one --> Red to Yellow to Green. Usually it happens so fast you don't notice it, but when zone lag increases, it suddenly becomes visible to the eye. This happened to me a lot blue side last night on Justice, and not a stalker in sight.

That's funny, because every time I've ever AS'd a bomb it's flown up into the air and fallen back down, and it's never happened otherwise. Hmm.

That might not be what you think, Bill...

Mine also would not reliably auto-target and auto-fire when double-tapping, or hitting tab or ctrl-tab. But I think it is lag, and not a targeting problem issue per se. Try setting your world details, character details, and such to the lowest possible settings. It may be that your client piece (of the game) is too busy feeding render instructions to your graphics card, and is not listening (well enough) to your keyboard.

before I turned down my settings to prevent lag (offered in case you're already at the lowest settings and still having the problem), there are a couple things you can try.

1. hover, but within heal range if you need that
2. face outward from the pack. they'll be less to render, and less chance of missing the keystrokes.
3. after you do have a target, look up, so less is rendering.

For my nova form, i'd look down, while hovering over the edge of the mob, facing outward, so there would be only 3-10 rikti there. I'd tab or ctrl-tab to target one, then look up, so I wasn't seeing the crowd at all, and start hitting attacks. Works okay, and much fewer lag-related issues.

But, like the 200-hero hami-raids of old, lag will always be an issue, and will mess with your attacks and targeting. Same solution there and here: turn down every graphics setting you can find, and you'll have better luck!
