I've not won one yet--but I'm in there slugging away at it.

Bah! This is only the third one (here, at least). You'll get your time to shine.

Very Southwest...

My thought exactly, that's why I created Stormbow.

That and it gave me an excuse to play two powersets I've never tried - Storm Summoning and Archery.

The latest entry page is up.

There were fewer participants this time. Is that due to it being a holiday weekend, the launch of i12, or a lack of interest since there are no prizes?

probably all three, with emphasis on first and second. The third... meh... lots of folks just like to get their work to an appreciative audience.

"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."

I would've participated, buuut... I really had nothing concept-wise for the pallette. vv

It was a tough Palette--took me a bit to settle on an idea for it. That could be part of it too.

I can see it being a tough one. I didn't get a chance to try it myself, though. I'm just trying to keep the palette's from being the same every week. Plus, if I went with personal preference, everything would be on the cooler side with lots of blues and purples.

Wasn't a complaint, just an observation--I like the challenge, that's why I do it prize or no prize.

Yeh it was fun - the harder the better I say, I like having to think about it a bit!

I wasn't implying that you were complaining.

Would it be more or less fun, if we skipped the critique/winners thing and just jumped straight into another palette?

Posted

Well, while you're judging, I think it'd be best if you started another immediately! The critique is good and great, and seeing what's best is also great and good, but can't we get started on our next designs while that's going on?

Posted

Yes, another palette please! I've been watching this thread and the other for a while wanting to participate, but couldn't since I didn't have an active account. That's changed and I'd love to give it a try.

Less fun, IMO. If there's no winner, it's not a contest, it's a showcase. Not that I expect to win, in fact I would be shocked if I even came close. As an analytical thinker, I know my costuming skillz are not on par with some of the more creative members, and so I'm as interested in critique and/or pointers as anything else.

I agree I like hearing what you have to say Naz, and I like that someone's picked as a winner. Otherwise we could be posting in "your best costumes here!" and be done.

Of course, it would be cool to have guest judges like Dirtwolf, LJ, TA, DarkJedi, Aerones, Juggy and others. They could pick 1st, and 2nd place and asking nicely for one of them to pick a winner from a group of entries, would be pretty neat. We might not know who till after all the entries were in. If they felt like donating the time for a quick judging that would be very cool. That way, we get a variety of takes and we can't start tailoring to a particular judge's built in likes or dislikes. In short, we'd have to bring our best game every time.

Just a thought.

not a bad thought, not least of which because you'd be able to compete again!

Not a bad idea. I'll see what I can do.

I'll try to get the critique done during my lunch break.

Wow, this was a tough one!

Plasma Streamer –
Good color balance. Even the skin tone you chose works well here. The design is simple – a belly shirt with leather pants – yet modern feeling. It’s hard to tell if you used all the colors, but it looks good.

Gwyneira –
This costume reminds me of the pulpy space-faring heroes like Flash Gordon, Captain Comet, etc. I could easily see this character, fists ablaze, leading the charge against an army of world-conquering aliens. I’m not crazy about that belt in this instance. It seems to conflict with the rest of the design. I might’ve gone with one that matched the tiara a little better. My only other nitpick is with the hands. Why keep them fleshy? I’d like to see the teal or even the orange used on the boots there instead.

Sound Shield –
Here we have an eclectic combination of costume pieces that works well in this scheme. I’d lose the reticle. The hair cuts into it, and it also interferes with the slash across the face. On the other hand, I love the way the Exoproto pattern lines up with the tribal markings on the boots! Was that a happy accident or did you plan it that way?

ColdShock –
Here we have a clever name and an interesting combination of powers. Am I right in assuming the primary is Ice? That combined with his name being COLDshock instead of SHOCKINGcold, makes me think the color scheme should be inverted (more blues/greens and less orange). I think the warmer orange electricity would look striking against the colder appearing metallic body type. Those goggles serve a dual purpose – they could be the sunglasses that skiers and snowboarders use, or they could be protecting his eyes against the chaotic tendrils of electricity. The organic shoulders gave me pause, until I realized those could be seen as ice (which would mean I’d keep it a cool color if you decide to invert the scheme). Nice job!

Psywire –
Another nice, old school look from seraff. I think the color pattern could use some work, though. All the colors seem segregated to me. I think if you just made the gloves match the boots and the legs match the arms, it’d work better. Definitely keep the style you’re using with the lightning bolts, though. I like how they “cut” into the gloves and boots using the colors before them.

Stormbow –
Nice job picking up on the southwestern comment and putting it into practice! I think it could use a little extra touches of turquoise to balance things out - perhaps the trim of the vest or the pattern of the skirt? Maybe even the shoes. I’m not crazy about the shoes, and I’d suggest one of the wrapped pieces, but that’s more preference/personal style.

WINNER: Plasma Streamer
2nd Place: Stormbow

Congratulations! You both win a no-prize!

Now get to work on your next palette designs!

I snuck the lighter blue in on the flame, but they're all there.
