Really long hair

Go see the comments about doing hair on a render farm on the extras for The Incredibles...

Not happening anytime soon. Not unless there's a major breakthrough in rendering technology...

Two Words for you:

Heavenly Sword.

Hair can be rendered on a PC graphics card in many different ways. Some of them are quite efficient and look realistic.

If you use Cape options for hair the hair will look and flow like a cape and not necessarily like hair.

So your hair will hang down off your head get tied to your neck then flow down off your shoulders. That is how capes work. There are no capes that attach to top of head etc. so the flow wouldn't be right without a separate option.

Another problem is color. When you choose long hair in Hair you choose 2 colors and your hair color is a mix of the 2. You don't have that option in capes and people will complain that they can't create their strawberry blonde bombshell with only.

I'm sure there were no capes that attached at the butt when Trench coats came out, but waddya know they look like capes that attach at the butt. When you use them they also prevent you from using capes (you can't have a butt cape and a normal one at the same time). We see that it IS possible to have capes attach elsewhere, so it's possible that that some can be made to attach at the head.

That's not what this thread is about. It's about having the ability for your character to have hair that is longer than waist length. Knee and ankle length hair is what this thread is about, and the ability to have it flow.

Well there seems to be good news on that front. If you've seen the bridle veil, then you know that having really long hair IS possible, and there's not need to use any tricks to explain why it only flows from the shoulders down.

The veil flows just like a cape, but it's attached at the HEAD! A talented costume creator like sexy Jay could replace the veil texture with various hair textures and create different ways of blending it with the hair on the head (various ties, etc).

We now know it's possible to have things flow off the head and we know Sexy Jay's got the skills, and now we just have to wait and hope he works his magic (and hope they don't charge us 10$ for it >_&gt.

Yeah, I know. When I found that out I was very confused and immediately thought of this thread.

I know what I heard, so it's very possible the policy changed. Which is a good thing...

However it may be extremely relevant to the use of cape technology attached to the head to create long hair. In particular it would hint that if back cape and butt cape are possible at the same time, then long hair == head cape will be possible at the same time as one of back cape or butt cape.

And yes, that is a pre I7 glam hairdo on my avatar.

That said, can anyone comment on whether a long shoulder cape and a tux butt cape play well together?

But doesn't the Cape Technology only render a flat image?

Who wants flat hair?

Kind of related, I was thinking it'd be nice to have a long bandana back there too. You can kinda do it now by combining a single color scarf cloak with a headband hair, but it's just a bit off.

Two things. First, the new bridal veil hangs off the top of the head, so that knocks that argument out. Second, the rings cape does blending, so it is certainly possible to some extent.

IANAD, so I can't speak for certain, but my guess is that the cape technology uses some sort of inverse kinematics. I'm guessing now, but I think it animates a few key points at the bottom of the cape, and uses IK to move the remaining vertices in the cape.

There's no reason this could not be applied to a "non-flat" hairdo.

As a player and builder in Second Life, that's actually not quite accurate. The in game hair isn't flexible. You literally have to make a separate object and wear it like a wig, plus it doesn't do something CoX's flexis do... Collision Detection. 2nd Life flexis (Be they skirts, wigs, or anything) cannot detect if it's interacting with another object or player. Thus if you wear that hair and walk backwards, it'll all go right through you and end up sticking through your chest. While the capes will sometimes do this in CoX, they try hard not to. Completely different systems, makes it hard to use one to say the other "can do it".

Bioware's Neverwinter Nights (dunno about NwN2) had an interesting bit of model coding that the modding community certainly had a damn good play with in certain areas - essentially it allowed a fixed part of the body to 'jiggle' - most commonly used on breasts, naturally, but also added to hairstyles, which gave the effect that it moved and flowed as a character moved around. It was fairly 'low' tech, but it served its purpose quite well. I don't see why something similar couldn't be put into CoX to enliven the hairstyles a little more, though god knows it'd probably start a debate about female heroes, jiggling and superjump...

Jay, having said that we are only allowed to have one cape, has ruled out us having things like loincloths, tabards, Mu capes, and flowing hair.

Well, I can understand loin cloths, that essentially means a cloth in the front but not in the back. Think about it.

The same with a tabard, or even a dress, where you've got a part that hangs down in front and part in back. Even if you make a split skirt kind of thing, it's still not going to work.

The long hair, though, I don't see. I can see not having hair AND a cape, or long hair AND a trenchcoat. Then again, you can't have a cape and a trenchcoat, so it is obviously possible to exclude some options when you pick others.

I consider it pretty much obvious that if I want long hair that actually animates and flows, then that means it has to be a back option, like a cape or wings. It might be selected from the head menu, but again, like trenchcoats that's just a interface issue. It's actually still a back option, even though it's presented as an option for the head or torso.

That's interesting. Of course, Ghost Widow has both flowing hair and a buttcape, so clearly two "flowing options" are possible, if not accessable to players. My thought is, though, is there some reason that maybe that combination doesn't look good? Like, for instance the two capes flow according to the same algorithm, and thus move in exact sync with each other.

For Ghost Widow, who only appears in a few cut scenes and occasionally as a character, that probably isn't too noticable. But if you were looking at it all the time on your character, it might become annoying. But I guess I don't know if that's the case or if they "flow" separately.
