Aggro for no reason? o.O

Now, I do not play Blasters that often, but I recently made a Fire/Elec one that I am enjoying (the sheer amount of damage he deals makes me understand the differnce between a Corruptor and Blaster).

Anyway, this guy is getting way more aggro than any toon I have ever played. Things even aggro him when he is not doing anything. This is not retarded "I am standing next to you" aggro or "extreme AoE usage" aggro. I mean, I am seeing baddies that actually run past the person that first attacked and head straight for me who was standing a bit of a way away and doing nothing. I did not even have toggles running.

Just a scenario that actually happened to me today: I was playing on a team of three. I had absolutely no toggles running except for Sprint and I was showing the team leader a hidden glowy. It was on a platform thingy close to the ceiling and he had a hard time finding it. Well, the room we were in was rather larger but we had emptied it and there was a spawn in the next room that our third was waiting near to attack.

After getting bored of waiting for us, our third then started attacking the small group of three baddies. The leader and I had no idea she attacked, we could not even hear the sound effects; but none-the-less two of the baddies came running around the corner just to hit me. Our third then made a comment on how they totally ignored her and came straight to me despite the fact she even killed one chasing them to me.

Now I know I generate a lot of hate during battles since I am usually doing most of the kills and spamming two AoEs, but it is starting to seem like my aggro is carrying over to the next mobs I encounter. If this is so, it is completely unfair, esspecially for a class that has no personal defenses and low HP.

Was this your mission? Sometimes the mission holder is bumped up the hate ladder a smidge because the mobs know you're in there trying to stop them.

Looks like you've found the "Wi" bug. I used to play Asheron's Call and that was the name that was developed for really weird aggro issues. Fortuantely in AC you could redesign your character completely so that if you discovered you really did have the Wi bug, you could make your guy into a tank so that became his purpose.

It could be the same sort of issue here in Heroes, in AC the game assigned a unique number to each person based on their account name and their character's name. If you had the right combination you ended up at the top of every bad guy's hate list.

Try doing some more concrete testing with it, ie: see how far away from the spawn you can stand and still get them to go after you. I'd love to hear more about this.

I think the starting aggro rules (that is, critters who haven't taken any damage yet) are slightly randomized on purpose. I've gotten the same effect on Force Field defenders. . . haven't taken a swing at anyone, and some goon starts getting in my visage.

Going around the corner to get you, that seems a little extreme, though.

I have both a Fire/Nrg and Fire/Fire blasters and I have to admit I have never encountered the severe aggro hate the OP describes.

I just saw this happening last night too. I was on a full team with my tanker, and I was the one taking aggro from every spawn. Almost every time, I would jump in and taunt, and a large portion of the mobs would COMPLETELY IGNORE my invincibility aura and my taunt and run to attack someone on my team, who had done NOTHING. It wasn't a freak occurence. It happened on almost every single spawn in the mission.

I didn't notice who they were going for, but something was clearly bugged/broken. Mobs should not be able to completely ignore a tank's taunt to attack someone that has not aggroed them in any way.

Didn't make a difference on that team, since it was a great team. I didn't bug it, because if I spent time bugging every bug I ran into in this game, I'd have no time to actually play.

MMMM AAAAAAARGH FIRE BAAAAAAAAAD !!!

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

It's called blaster taunt. You aggroed them simply by entering the building. Then rumor spread that there was a blaster in the building. Soon, every mob in the building is on the lookout for "the blaster". These guys may have simply been running away from the crazy scrapper and saw "the blaster".

Some people think blaster taunt is only a myth....like unicorns. But it is reality. We are only now seeing it in greater effect since guantlet is broken. Blasters just scale higher than any AT on the aggro scale.

Take a team with every AT on it. Run them into a mob spawn with no toggles on, and make no attacks. Most of the mob will spot the blaster and rush in to take him/her down.

Nerf blaster taunt!

I know about that. But...

1. I was also using taunt.

2. It's not like my teammate's aggro was overriding my taunts. My teammates HAD NO AGGRO. They would stand like 20 feet back. I would jump into a spawn. IMMEDIATELY half the spawn would ignore me and run to attack my teammates (WHO WERE OUT OF AGGRO RANGE!!!).

I know blaster aggro overrides tanker aggro. That's how it's been for a long time, and I'm fine with it. When a tank taunts a target and a blaster shoots it, the target will ignore the taunt and attack the blaster. That's fine. The problem is that the mobs are now attacking the blaster without him doing ANYTHING.

I experienced this on my low level Elec/Elec Blaster in a Frost Fire mission. I was not the mission holder.

Two minions ran around a corner at me to attack. I was on a team of 7, and was out of line of site when my team started attacking. They came at least 30 ft up the hall to get to me, maybe more.

Yes, this happens. It isn't just you.

When and why does it happen are harder questions to answer. I suppose the team as a whole is on the agro list of the entire spawn. Which is why the mobs will turn and attack you after killing your teammate even if you did not specificaly attack them.

I usually see this happen when players are out of LoS but still within the mobs agro range. When someone agros the mob, some mob will for some reason "see" the person who is out of LoS and if not agrod by someone else, will head for the person around the corner. I have been on the recieveing end of this and watched it happen to others while playing my defender.

I don't really see anything extremely wrong with it, except that sometimes I find it odd when a mob will run by a team of players to hit one guy standing in the back. It just looks odd when you see a warwolf skamper by the Tank and head straight for the empathy defender . It's like a strange game of Duck, Duck, Goose.

I've only had the aggro bypass thing happen with Mynx, several on 8-man teams. One time there was a Fire Brute, Dark Brute (with Taunt), 2 Stalkers, a Fire Corruptor, a Dark Mastermind, a Dominator, and my Mastermind.
Everytime we'd "zerg" Mynx would aim straight for me, bypassing every single person her stupid cateyes saw.
Had I not been in bodyguard, I would've died way more than I happened to that time. It only got worse when I'd rez and she'd still go for me, as if there was some shiny that she needed to dismember me for.
The only solace I got was when I held aggro while hovering.

I think it's different with different blasters, too. My eng/eng blaster has far fewer random agro events than my fire/fire. I think one of y'all already called it, mobs hate fire.

Nope.....mobs get a nice shiny badge for killing 500 blasters. Got to work hard on it.

All characters have a couple of metrics assigned to them in regard to aggro. The most notable are archetype, distance, and 'threat'.

Archetype has a significant effect on how mobs react to you. Dwarf Peacebringers and Warshades can attract mobs with their very presence in many situations, while Defenders, non-Dwarf'd PBs and Warshades, Controllers, and Blasters have more middle-ground archetype threat ratings. Tankers have low base threat values, and scrappers are nearly ignored.

Enemies target heroes closer to them. No point running far.

Enemies also measure 'threat', a sum of damage, debuffage, and control done once you've entered the enemy's perception radius. Note that just because the enemies aren't chasing you, you may still be on that perception list.

Also, lower-level heroes are consider crunchy and go well with BBQ. Enemies aim for them first, all other attributes being equal.

Had you stealthed ahead through the mission? Or looked into that room? Did the group act like an ambush?

Fighting Siege last night on a 6-man team. I was on my blaster, standing 70+ feet away, stealthed and not attacking. Tank attacks Siege. Guess who Siege attacks? Guess who ate pavement without firing a shot?

Posted

I wasn't there, I don't know... but was Siege using an Energy Torrent type of attack or was it single-target?

Because there's the "stood in the cone" effect.

(I also think that mobs may react to discovering stealthed players the same way heroes react to discovering a stealthed Stalker. Not sure if you were even discovered, though.)

Its possible, but not if he was firing at the tank, who was on the other side of Siege. (I actually got caught off guard and didn't notice the tank had called "ready".)

How could one reliably test for this to see if it's a bug? I thought the whole point of Scrappers having armor was because, according to Statesman, they "faced more risk." If a Scrapper can full-on attack a horde of bad guys and not attract any aggro while that horde is whaling the tar out of an AFK Blaster, then obviously the Scrapper's "risk" is overstated.

Posted

I think the "more risk" means that they have to get into melee, but blasters can stand at a distance and fight. The ol' "range as defense" arguement, which was semi-okay, back when many mobs had only a pistol, or single slow-recharge range attack (Freaks didnt' throw buzzsaw blades, Wolves didn't chuck rocks). <_<

I have no data or testing to back it up, but I have also been the target of undue hate on behalf of the mobs. Tanks run in, grab aggro, I do nothing, mobs turn on me and pound my face in for no reason. I think Blasters just have a big target painted on them at all times.

i have a pb that when im teamed, mobs will find there way to the back of the team where im usual positioned, to pound on me and me alone. ive seen them run thru taunt aruras, blaster aoes, and troller ground aoes such as quick sand and other sorts of other nifty tricks usualy designed to cause them to not come and hit me...but nothing short of a tanker taunt (as in the power "Taunt") will actually make them break agro from me... and thats assuming i havent attacked them yet...if i have, im on my own ...its really annoying.
haven noticed this on any of my non tank toons other than my pb.

Aggro on the taunt auras is broken. This has been a known issue for a little while and the Developers are working to put a fix in for it.
