Warcry "Ask a Dev" Series Discussion
So basically the same stuff we had on these forums a while ago and then stopped out of nowhere, but over on Warcry instead?
It stopped 'cause Lord Reculse (Zeb) left.
Yeah, I remember that, but there were other devs other than him that were still around that as far as I know didn't get their moment in the series. They could have just continued with another one.
But now we can ask for Positron's reaction to that Websnark post!

"To die hating NCSoft for shutting down City of Heroes, that was Freedom."
Meh, not much there anyways. Less waffle, more substance! Give us teh juicey low down. Hearing that Posi didn't like his armour's look so he was happy to up-grade is okay, but it isn't earth shattering. Not intended as a knock, just advice that some more concrete information would be apreciated. On the other hand, given the past, I can understand why they wouldn't want to say to much to us.
Without wanting to come across as whiny (because Dev Q&A sessions are paradise for information freaks like me, and I love them wherever they happen), why is this happening over on WarCry, instead of here on the game's own forums? Isn't this just the sort of thing the community could do with in the run-up to I9?
Gotta agree with Lady S here. Why do we have to go to another site for this?

I think the problem with having this stuff on another site, rather than the boards, is that Posi has to play publicist a bit... He's going to talk a bit more like a PR person (check out the last question about how great GvE is) and a bit less frankly. I'm not saying he was being dishonest, I just think we'd get some real information if Ask a Dev were on the forums...

In a nutshell, It's a partnership. We want to spread the love and by collaborating with the Warcry network we bring wider coverage than just doing something here in our corner of the web.

Works for me. Thanks for the answer!

Plus if you think about it, people that have quit the game can easily ask questions in the Warcry forums (something that they couldn't do here, since having a cancelled account means lack of forum access).

If you check the original Ask a Dev info thread, it was only slated to include Manticore, Geko, Positron, Capt. Mako, War Witch, Statesman and Lord Recluse. LR left before his answers were posted. No one else had been announced to follow, though a few times a repeat of the Ask a Dev series has been suggested.
I'm glad it's coming back and hope it becomes a regular occurance.

I'm also glad it's back, and I do hope it becomes a regular feature, I just wish they had continued with the original (even if it meant re-asking people or adding other people to the list).

Not only that. It is a Win-Win situation... promotional-wise.
Warcry adds to the legitimacy of their popularity by extolling the partnership with Dev. leads and marketing of a well-known game and continuiing title. Remember the questions are screened ahead of time.
NCSoft wins because they DO get to reach out to those who might be regulars on Warcry, but have yet to discover the mouth-watery kewlness of the Co* Franchise. More sales brings in more ales... so to speak.

Ditto the folks on the EU forums -- without having to do a separate Ask a Dev just for them.
Questions to asks?
%s on inventions.
We got a sneak peak with the leak to test. Give us a % on that nice 53 enhancement that buffs acc/damage/recharge/range/end redux
idk.... lil bit skeptical about getting answers to some of the big questions that are bound to get asked, such as are nerfs over with?
Is the (insert powerset here) powerset ever going to be fixed? Vill & Hero hami raids? When is i9 coming out? etc. Those questions among other big ones are all gonna get the same generic answers that they do now. How about a "Stick a Dev with Sodium Penathol and Then Ask Questions" thread?
Moreover, since a 'selected few' questions are going to be answered at the end of the month, I would believe that the questions chosen would be only the ones that the devs would be willing to answer.
Hopefully the Q&A wont be that way, but again, im skeptical.

I am surprised at how dead the Warcry forums are on COH. I glanced through most of them, and most of them are showing a 'happy new year' type post up top, followed by 1 - 2 posts in December, then some go all way the back to March. Very dead.
Having played AC, AC2, SWG, DDO, and COH (and I'm hitting 33 month vet rewards in about 10 days), I chalk this up to the strength of the official COH forum. Cryptic & NC Soft have done a great job of keeping this the go-to forum for this game.
Looking at previous games favorite websites, most end up with 8 - 10. Other than this forum, I have Red Tomax's story arc site linked, along with 2 SG sites.
So, it's great that Warcry is getting involved, but I am skeptical that it will generate a lot of interest on Warcry's site.
Hopefully I will be wrong
I would like to see this feature back in these forums.
I hope it's something that lasts, unlike the pathetic Prima Binder update system. I wish I could just stop doing stuff at work and still keep my job....hmmm, I guess that'll be my question for Statesman since he did the pdf thingy.
the only question I want answered is why do the devs listen to the whining, foot stomping, breath holding posts, instead of sticking with their plans.

Matt Miller: The Invention system is the single biggest system we have added post-launch to the game. It really changes the face of the game for the hardcore players, by giving them a huge chance to make their awe-inspiring characters even better with the special crafted Enhancements they can make. The best part is anything that is a reward can be made using the Invention system, that means the sky is pretty much the limit on what players can obtain, including costume pieces.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmmm...does this mean that all Veterens rewards will be able to be created by the invention system? Does this also mean, that rewards like the Jump Pack from Good Vs. Evil or the costume pieces gained from the other DVD sets will be able to be invented?
Edit: I just recalled Positron stating before that the wings from the Veterans Rewards were a preview of what's to come from the inventions system. I'm not thinking that all we're getting from being a veteran is stuff from the Inventions system without having to invent them.
Just to clarify:
Anything that is a reward "can" be made with the invention system.
This does not mean everything rewarded in the game is Inventable.
This means that, if we wanted to, we could have an Invention that gave out XP. Or Prestige. Or a Costume Piece. Or Infamy. Or a Badge. Or an Enhancement (we do a lot of Enhancements with the initial implementation of the system).
The invention system will not have all of this to start, but I am very excited with the sheer power of the system, as is Jack, which is why he touted it so positively in the earlier interview.
And also:
Start submitting your questions for me here. I am going to take a good sample of the more popular questions and answer them in a future update. After that, you will see other developers bios and a thread where you can ask them questions. The bios will help you ask appropriate questions of the appropriate developer. That way you don't ask Jay about what %'s Invented Enhancements give and you don't ask Castle why the Witch Hat has no hair.

Introducing the Ask a Dev article series on CoH Warcry and the Warcry Network! Each article of the series will introduce a new member of the City of Heroes and City of Villains Development Team and ask them questions about the game.
In this first article, you get to meet Lead Designer Matt "Positron" Miller. Head over to the Warcry Forums and pose your questions Matt. Later this month, Warcry will select the top questions and then Matt will give us his take on them.
In the follow up article that includes Matt's answers, we will also introduce the next Development Team Member: Cryptic Studios Creative Director, Jack "Statesman" Emmert!
Use this thread to discuss this new series.
