I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that for so long, gaming was (and still pretty much is) a male dominated culture. Since it's starting to become more popular with females, you start to see a variety...
For a long time, video games featured just male icons... eventually they came around to feature some butt kickin' female icons like Laura Croft or characters like Tifa from Final Fantasy. Sure for the most part they're scantily clad... but the idea that you can be strong, smart, AND beautiful does appeal to a lot of girls.
Laura Croft..pfft! Let me know when she's a boob reduction.

If you need a video game to tell you can strong, smart and lovely...then you need more help than having a few female characters can provide.
Besides there are plenty of eye pleasing women who play this game and others. Just they want to actually PLAY the game not date the gamers. :P

Well, not that I like the idea of busty women in bikinis and heals kicking butt (you won't see any of my characters in a " suit") I will say I have more fun playing a female character rather than a male...

Several of my male in-game friends (including my husband, my best friend) play female characters. They build these characters as strong women who seriously kick butt. I think this just shows that they really respect strong women.
My Characters
Well, I think that the change is really only for CoH/CoV. I'm /pretty/ sure that the WoW community (at least, the vocal/obsessive community) are just as nerdy and, um... conventionally-beauty-challenged as ever.
What I find interesting about this game is the HUGE age difference. I've teamed with people between 12 and 43. Of course, most seem to fall into a 17-23-ish bracket...
But I love seeing pics of people that play, it's so diverse and often surprising.

I actually have two toons (one hero, one villain) I made based on myself, as much as I could. *chuckle* I don't have any images of Muse right now, but here's Mistress Muse...
And here I am.
The pic is a tiny bit outdated, I do actually have bangs now. :-) So my hair looks more like that toon, than the 'mod' hairstyle.
This is why I love these things. Miss_Nox looks so kind in her real life picture, but after seeing pictures of Mistress Muse, I would not mess with her.

/agree, though most fighting-game females I would personally hesitate to offer as examples of respectable female game characters. Fighting games aren't known for much depth of characterization. Pretty face with cool moves, yay?
That said... my favorite video game girl is Samus Aran. She's a girl, but her games don't feel obligated to make a huge fuss about it, and I really admire that.

Actually, back in Asheron's Call days everyone seemed to be making avatars (we didn't have toons back then, ya'know) that looked more or less like themselves. And so we had a world full of white guys for the most part. I got sick of that fast and made my opposite. Male -> Female, White -> Black, Hairy -> Bald. And thus Tesslah was born (then translated to CoH). Been a great character and I don't think I've seen anyone looking like her in any game.
