MysticFire (WIP!)

WIP to the left, WIP it to the right, but don't WIP it too hard 'cause your pants are too tight!

Well, since most everyone seems to like to watch the process of my pieces (or any piece for that matter) here is another WIP. Currently on the chopping block is Mysticfire, that transdimensional fiery type guy.
Here's the pose that was decided on in the end for him, a mysterious traveler with a touch of the brooding to him.

And Here's the pencil rough. And before anyone mentions it, I realize the belt is ridding a bit too high which makes his torso look a bit short and weird. It's been fixed, just not rescanned. Ya for those things I don't catch until after I see the scan

More to come as, well, it comes.

Hmm, you know what? Normally, I can figure out exactly what is going on with your planning sketches...but in this one...I don't know. Is there a figure in there somewhere? I mean, I see the dumptruck. I see the birds. I even see the bowling ally. But where is MysticFire?

That looks great! I love your work and can't wait to see the finished piece!

But that's the way it looks on the game models! :P (pet peeve, sorry. I really hate some aspects of the game models. teeny feet is another...)

Really looking forward to seeing that fire colored...

Okay... ran into a snag tonight *pounds head into wall*. Apparently, they changed the formulation of the multimedia board I use for these watercolors or something. The boards I had been using I had sitting around for a couple of years. Either way, the last of those was used for Hems. The new ones I ordered, however are completely inferior in quality! *pounds head into wall some more* After the first wash of color, not only did the board begin warping slightly, but the color actually soaked into it (it's not supposed to) and ended up drying in a weird bleeding pattern... hell, in one spot it bled clean through to the back side! *pounds head into wall again and again*

I'll try to come up with a work around... maybe using gesso on the board... or *pounds head into wall* something... I don't know. I'll have to start over as the pencils are wrecked now. Might be able to get a print out and do a transfer, but things are going to be a bit delayed until I can think of something that will yield the quality of the previous works.

Either way, things are going to be delayed, but, hopefully I'll have some forward movement very soon... or kill my self, which ever *pounds head into the wall several more times*

That's terrible news Graver. Here's hoping you'll find some board that won't throw a spanner in the works like this.

That really bites, Graver. Here's hoping you can find a way to fix it without too much trouble. I'm glad to see you doing some artwork for my fellow championite, and tentative ally.

Oh, and it was great getting to finally meet Abby in game Wednesday night. She real freaked Fenris out.

Kidding aside, that sucks man! Hope you can get something worked out soon. Wish I could be of more help, alas, my art foo is weak.

Oh wow, that sucks! Were you old boards pre-gessoed maybe? It has been a while, but I seem to remember that you could purchase boards plain or already gessoed. Doesn't really matter now though, the fact that you lost the work you had done on this one is horrible. I am really sorry to hear that. Talk about frustraiting!

This is why I always use the cheapest materials I can get away with. I used to paint some (mostly acrylics), but every time I turned around it seems like paper and boards would change quality on me. Even when I bought the same exact product. This was really bad when I would buy stuff online. Now while I go cheap, I still feel of any paper or whatever surface I am getting because of the changes between batches.

Oh my man Graver I feel your pain!!!! Last weekend I’m blowing through the digital paint project I’m working on and as I save my progress the program dies corrupting the file. Man I let out a W T F unlike the world has ever heard. Lush walks into the studio and sees what’s going on and her jaw hits the floor. A W T F!?! Thought bubble explodes from her head! So I can’t work on it for the remaining 3 hours in my already 18 hour day due to my wonderful mood. So I pick it up fresh the next morning and decide to use the iterative save feature in Painter, which basically saves a new numbered version of the file every time you save. So I'm back to work now 16 files deep/2gig project folder into my new save strategy. My stomach is calling me names so I decide I better feed the beast. I save my progress and go grab a quick bite. I’ve quelled the beast and I’m going back to work sipping my fresh cup of coffee with "I am about to polish this huge piece off" stamped across my forehead...16 doesn’t open. I think well hey let me open it in Photoshop because the error was about an unsupported blend layer of some sort...doesn’t open. Hmph let me open number 15 as I pat myself on the back prematurely for saving multiple copies of the piece...doesn’t open. I let out an audible growl and open 14...It opens. It was the last save the day before, so I basically lost another complete day of work! Now this has only happened once or twice in the last year so I honestly cant get too pissed. I have one more trick up my sleeve to try and get 15 or 16 to open /e crossesfingers.

Oh no! I'm terribly sorry for both of you. I know when I lose my writing that way, it haunts me. Even after I rewrite it, I'm always certain that I had one brilliant sentence, a perfect moment of clarity, that I was never able to replicate in the second version.

I just chant over and over, "Computers make our lives eaier. Computers make our lives easier."

It was looking wonderful so far, Graver. I can't wait to see the finished version.

Damn Gill! That sux hardcore too! I know the feeling of not saving. I had a project my freshman year at college. I stayed up all night the night before it was due trying to fix some bugs...trying to fix my procrastination. So about 30 mins before class Visual Basic crashes!!! And guess what I hadn't saved a thing. 9 hours of programming for nothing, pissed me off. Needless to say I save evertime I change my code now.

I bought a brand new flash drive *specifically* for this purpose >< I have a history of computer problems and every time mine messes up - I lose my writing *and* my art <x.x>

Ever lose 2 novels in progress as well as something on the order of 20 artworks? <,< Then do it twice! (Granted - they all sucked <'x'> but they meant alot to me anyway!)

I hope you guys can get some good luck though <;.;> this blows.

Oh man! That totally sucks, hard, for the both of you!

I hope things work out without any more trouble...

Dang. :/ I can't even imagine how I'd feel if I lost a piece of art I was working hard on.

This is true. I heard it while I was at work, with a construction crew working behind me, while I was wearing headphones. >.>

Seriously sucks that you guys had this kind of crap happen. Hopefully things will all work out better in the end

Well Gill and all, good to know I'm not the only one who's suffered the woe's of corrupted files and the hells that such brings. In this instance, though, it's not the loss of the pencils that bothers me... hell, I scanned those it and I can always do them again. I'm used to that as I screw things up on quite a regular basis. That's just a little extra time, no thing. It comes with the territory of working in traditional media... no save feature and no undo button

The big thing is the boards. I am now out of the boards I had been using to paint on and the new ones are totally inferior. They warp, buckle, soak up[ the paint and, when heavy water is applied, they dry splotchy instead of smooth. The surfaces that I have been painting on are no more and a lot of the effects and just how the paint looked was a result of the surface. Now, I have to find a new surface to paint on which means a whole different approach to putting the paint on the surface, a whole different set of pro's and con's, certain things I was able to do on my old surface I probably wont be able to do, but then again, there might be some things that I will be able to do that I hadn't. It makes me really consider moving digital... at least I'll know my surface will be consistent I even found an old wacom tablet on ebay with painter 9... that I'm winning for a ridiculously low price (and no one else had better run a search for it and out bid me! )

Change is usually greeted with frustration and cries of W T F I guess, and while I shall dearly, dearly miss my old boards (they really were things of great awsomness... they were like paper that I could sand and scrape and they would never warp or buckle even after being submerged in water!). The boards they are producing now even buckled a bit after I strapped it down and applied one coat of gesso . But ya, I'll miss those boards, but change can be good. I'm playing with watercolor on gesso right now and it has given me some new ideas for other directions to go. That and I guess it's good I lost the work I had done... I was getting a bit too stiff with my work (the whole reason I stopped oil painting in the first place) and it's time I did reassess my approach. This incident has given me some ideas for other directions to explore, so it's not all bad. But, damn it, I am going to miss those boards and hoepfully people won't mind if my work takes on a slightly different look.

I miss those boards already..

So does that mean my piece is getting a new look? If it does its all good Im sure it will look awesome anyways.

Well, Mystic, I don't know yet, but if it does, you'll be the first to know. I'll need your okay if things change beyond what was already approved And thanks for the vote of confidence there.
