New COH comic preview 10 pages

It's not Mark Waid's (the writer) fault. As many have already stated, all the mistakes pointed out look more like screw-ups by David Nakayama (the artist) than anything else.

I got the impresion that they're in Boomtown. There aren't any Hellions in Boomtown, but there are plenty of Clocks and Outcasts...

I don't think I like the whole "everyone in the zone loses their powers part". What kind of spell can stop EVERYONE's powers regardless of what their source is?
Turns off a mutant's genes, stops a tech hero's armor from functioning, strips the power from magical artifacts, keeps magic heros from casting spells, somehow keeps the changed body chemistry/whatever of science heros from functioning, strips kheldians of their natural alien abilities....
So we get the cop out "a wizard did it".

My guess was Kings Row instead. The bottom panel looks a lot like Paladin had spawned based on the size of that clockwork pictured. Of course it might also be a new villian we haven't seen yet. May be babbage, but doesn't babbage have a big gear as a shoulder?
I'm more surprised someone hadn't picked up the bottom left panel's bubble...

Yeah I didn't quite get that etheir. So a natural AR/Devices blasters Guns and Devices stop working? a Natural MA/SR scrapper just gets weaker and slower? da hell? Oh well, besides that, and the hellion/outcast thing, I thought it was pretty cool, having Manticore as the main character (at least...it seems to be focusing on him) is kinda neat, and the artwork is awesome.

Wow - in the space of ten pages, the new comic has managed to do what the old comic has been unable to do for 11 issues now.
Consider me totaly blown away. I might actually start giving a damn about the comic book now.
All the heroes just got a taste of PvP.
Come on devs, art guys, where is my Maid costume for my characters! 5 years now, its a simple request.

Of course its quite possible that naturals were completely unaffected by the spell but with everyone else losing their powers decided it was time to beat feet anyway. I mean, what generally happens to a team in mid-combat when it suddenly loses 80% of the team? And with the teleporter system out? I could see it quickly turning into a rout.

Well, two things:
First, I'm well aware that the "Dark-Darkity-Darkness" is going to strike a chord with fans of the old comic, and I can understand why. CoH, (as I've said MANY times before) is based on the Golden and Silver Age Comics (i.e. no one dies, Heroes fight people like "The EVIL Dr. INSANO!" and "Captain Communist!", and above all, GOOD ALWAYS WINS IN THE END). The old comic was based around the same principle the game was, which is why many people now say this new comic isn't "true" to the game.
However, what Top Cow is OBVIOUSLY trying to do with CoH is bring the Golden and Silver Age tale into the "modern" comic era. And, as we all know, realism plays a large role in the "modern" comic. Even I have to admit that the "modern" feel that is in today's comics (and that will be coming to THIS comic) is much more "real" in the sense that there are ACTUALLY consequences to the Hero's actions! Fighting Villains isn't the "cakewalk" that was shown in the Golden and Silver Age; Hero's aren't "invincible" as was depicted in that age; and, most importantly, fighting evil isn't "fun" nor "enjoyable", as is STILL sometimes depicted today in children's TV shows. If you want "realism", today's comics are INFINITELY superior to Golden and Silver Age comics.
Of course, I ALSO understand that many people who play this game don't WANT that "realism". They WANT the "fluff", they WANT a comic game that is like the Golden and Silver Age days, one where "good is good", "evil is evil", and no one REALLY gets hurt. And, since those comics are VERY rare today, I can't blame them.
However, I think this is a GOOD thing. Not because it's TRUE to this game we all know and love, but because it's NOT true to the game.
Think about it: The comic DOESN'T change the game. Those who play this game because they love the Golden and Silver Age days STILL can enjoy that experience everytime they log on. The comic WON'T change that.
And those who wanted to see a "darker" version of Paragon City just got their wish. Here, we have a "modern" comic book intertwined with a "Golden and Silver Age" comic GAME. It should be interesting, seeing the difference between the Paragon City we all know and love and the "Dark" Paragon City the writers of Top Cow have created (though I STILL prefer my OWN "dark" story based on CoH [looks down at signature])
And the second thing (something I just noticed)...
I don't think this was a PREVIEW. I think this was the ENTIRE FIRST COMIC.
Look at the last panel. Notice the "Disconnecting in 5... 4...")?
That's the same message we get when we log out of CoH.

No States is just upset that he got pwned and is logging out in disgust. The comic will pick up a few hours later when he logs back in, after he walks off the hurt of the crappy team.

My guess is Steel Canyon. There are no Hellions or Outcasts in Kings Row, and it's not messed up enough for Boomtown. Steel has Clockies and Outcasts, though.

Issue 11 of the COH comic was 22 pages long (not counting the ad and the community pages). So, I sorta doubt that.
I pity the fool that ignores the release of this comic.

Actually, that's how I tend to divide magic and science/tech in my head.
Magic is best at doing things that seem impossible: Like simultaneously turning off all powers regardless of source. Science and technology is best at doing individual tasks efficiently.
Think of it this way. Turning a guy into a newt. Now for science, that's impossible. You gotta reconfigure his genetic/cellular/molecular structure and its incredibly difficult. Magic? *SNAP* of the finger: guy's a newt.
However, if you wanna make a device capable of blowing up the sun? That's something with a singular purpose (Sun=Good bye). Science and Technology would have the edge here.
I see your point, except my thought is that if the comic becomes the first exposure to CoH for some folks, they will be not necessarily pleasantly surprised if/when they log into the game.
Call me an old fogey, but I pretty much gave up on comics during the "darkity-dark" 90's, when every "hero" was either a demon from hell or an ego-bloated superstar whose only distinction as the hero was that it was their name on the cover.
The best concept of "realistic" superheroes, IMO, will always be Busiek's "Astro City". He managed to make the concept work without succumbing to "fin de siecle" nihilism.
To each their own, though. As you stated, I still have the game to enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against dark-darkity-darkness. The premise seems like a pretty cool idea, actually. I take issue with the execution of such. It seems. . . forced . . .
When I look at this preview, this is my impression:
"I'm Manticore. I'm the narrator because I'm a ninja, and I always seem pissed about something. We live in a modern-day Valhalla, or did, until Spider pulled Operation: Nerfbat. Then everyone started dying left and right, because those Spider guys, they've really got inconvenient timing. We lost all our powers, and I haven't the slightest idea how, even now. And then Statesman died. Or did he?"
In short, it's not the darkness that bugs me. It's how artificial the darkness feels, along with far too many plotholes, and the ridiculously hyper-exaggerated body structure which turn me off from the comic.
I'll still read it. I may even enjoy it, but, for me, this preview doesn't bode well to my future enjoyment of the comic.

Oh please - Manticore is NOT a Ninja. I've stood next to him for hours, and not ONCE has he flipped out and cut off someones head and not even thought twice about it.
I'm not even sure he's a mammal.
Greetings all,
I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that the text is not final in the preview.
The Hellions/Outcasts error and the repeated text boxes will be corrected before the final release.
Cheers,

W00t. Response from the man himself.
I have a couple questions though, are you a mammal? do you fight all the time? Have you ever flipped out and killed people?
Because if you have, I would like to be the first to headbutt you and then we both scream.

Yeah, yeah - but what about the important stuff. Are you a ninja and/or mammal?
I just saw the comic and saved all the pages... evn if they change the text... WWWWOOOOWWWW!!!!
I would like to thank Top Cow and City of Heroes for AGAIN making me drool all over my keyboard!
Add that to the fact that Mark Waid plays CoH, I'm inclined to agree with you.
