On the Care and Feeding of Your Scrapper (V2.0)

I'm the Neighborhood Scrapper. Domesticated when I feel like being spoilt a bit, and Feral when I don't.

I went so far as to adopt heal other, just to help ensure I have plenty of humans to pamper take me in and pamper me when I want. But I'm perfectly capable of feeding myself, and when I get that special gleam in the eye, lookout, something is gonna die, hopital bills be *bleeped*. I often find myself the second to last, if not last, Kitten standing.

Civilized scrapper.

There is a place and a time for violence in a team.

The place: a few feet in front of us.

The time: the few seconds it took to cover the few feet in front of us.

Great post! Now I know my scrapper is of the feral variety. And thank you for pointing out the annoyance caused by others hitting my targets. It is so irritating to have the boss knocked away from me by a well-meaning blaster when I clearly have the situation in hand. I finally got housebroken enough to make a button for "target nearest enemy" instead of chasing my prey all over the room and now leave the chasing to those with ranged attacks...mostly.

Is it psychotic to jump into a crowd you know you could handle if you just had one heal from the outside and scream "here I go, save me"?

[/ QUOTE ]

Did something similar to this the other day... I'd just reactivated my account and respecced my lvl 38 BS/Regen...

Ended up on a 6-7 person team doing the Paragon Protector arc (yeah, you know the one). Midway through the mission the team's scattered all over the map, and I'm alone in a hallway, staring at a full sized team spawn of orange, red and purple PP's with no fewer than 3 bosses in it...

I type in team chat "I'm gonna' do something stupid. See you when I get back from the hospital." Then I eat ALL of my inspirations (I carry lots of purples / yellows / reds for just such an occasion), pop Instant Healing, and dive in. Pure, unadulterated mayhem.

I get a bit of an assist from the teams 'troller about halfway through, and when we finish the last MoG'd PP in the spawn, the rest of the team's standing in the hallway a bit further down, just watching. The 'troller asks why they didn't help, and the Warshade says "Looked like you two had it under control."

Later on, I went and hunted +3 / +4 Warhulks and Fake Nem's on PI to celebrate. I love being a Scrapper.

Dear Lord.... Thank you for this insight. I didn't know. All this time I didn't know.

I'm a feral. I _have_ been that scrapper to jump in the middle of a group of red and purple to have fun... What did I say? "I'll draw the aggro. Give me a couple of minutes."

Thank you again. Great post!

One thing that is almost always forgotten about adopting a Scrapper:

Scrappers (especially when running in packs or in teams of other AT's) tend to suffer from color blindness and often misunderstand why others are worried about purples or reds.

"What's a purple? What's a red? Look, there are enemies to decimate! Why is everyone hanging back?!"

*sigh*

I'm becoming a converted Scrapper...
What's doing this, to a blaster/Kheld/troller?
Spines. At 22. With SOs and Quills....

"Oooh,moremoremorebiggrouplotsoffunlookcritslamdon t'runawaycatchthis!"

Yeah. All that "careful gameplay" and "pick and choose targets" from my others? Sure. Right...

I'm not really sure what I am, as I play both of my scrappers diffrently.

On my MA/regen, Solo, I am a pure death-dealing machine. If I see something, it lives for exactly 3 seconds. On teams, i tend to just stay back and wait for buffs, THEN destroy anything I see within 3 seconds.

However, on my Katana/Dark, i'm totally domestic. I can solo well, but I needs my Speed Boost and Fortitude, and maybe Adren boost.

holy freaking crap dude. This is so very true. My main is a level 28 Katana/regen scrapper and I'm a domesticated scrapper. I was unfortanely raised in captivity but I like it. With more people there is more baddies, and with more baddies there is more for me to kill, and as the kill count rises, the chaos grows. So i've learned to love it but as domesticated as I am, I completely agree with the kill stealing part. Nothing aggravates me more when I'm working on a guy (I don't care that he's a purple and can complete over power me!) and there's plenty of other baddies to kill and some blaster or fellow scrapper decides to "help" me. I'm a scrapper, I need no help. If you're my teammates, don't "help" me with my target; keep the other baddies off me and heal me. The enemy I'm fighting is mine, and mine alone, and thats how you should treat all scrappers.

As for the scrappers being psychotic, yea we are, but i don't like to call it psychosis as much as I like to call it the "scrapper bloodlust". As a scrapper you devolop a state of mind where you must take on every enemy for the sake of doing it. The higher up the monster, the more you want them dead. If your scrapper says "Lets kill Lusca", you better haul over to IP or you're either gonna lose a scrapper or you're onna have one angry scrapper on your hands. Trust me, you don't want an angry scrapper. The OP didn't call us a"living blender" for nothing. Have a nice day!

I think there is a fourth and forgotten style of Scrapper.

The Evolved Scrapper (Scrappus Evolutios) - This type is often mistaken for any of the other Scrappers as they tend to show a behavior pattern similar to that of their peers. This rare breed has evovled from his/her more primitive beginings. The may have started out as a Wild Scrapper, running rampant through the city obliterating all in their path. But somewhere down the line they ran into something bigger and badder than they were; usually an Arch-Villain or a particularly difficult Elite Boss. This forced the Scrapper to take on teams when the odds were not in their favor allowing them to evolve from a Wild to a Feral demeanor. This however, is generally the end of the evolutionary cycle for these Scrappers as the call of the Wild still pulls them into fits of soloing for hours against enemies they would not have fathomed engaging before. But, in some rarer cases, it has been known for a Scrappus Evolutios to evovle into the Civilized as they become less comfortable in the wild and more comfortable around others. But, they will still be prone to heed the call of soloing from time to time. The Scrappus Evolutios is the most likely to form a permanent duo relationship that will foster a family like bond. The duo is unlike the long-term duos most Ferals and Wilds will take on, but one that pairs the two together for the majority, if not all of their careers. This can be anything from a supporting Defender, the long range assistance of a Blaster or even a Controller to better help the Scrapper "do what they do best." In this scenario it is common place to allow the "lesser" AT to terminate the Scrapper's targets allowing his "family" member to feel a sense of self-worth and accomplishment. If anyone teamed with the "family" takes the liberty of doing so, it is generally frowned upon yet tolerated. It is rare for the Evolved to take on another Scrapper or a Tank into the duo as there will be a constant battle to prove dominance over the other which can cause a sense of contempt or belittlement by the adopted.

NOTE: The danger in this adoption is that whatever AT or build joins the Evolved will begin to take on Scrapper-like tendencies. Behavioral patterns include, taking on groups alone, dashing off as soon as the AT is ready and most commonly is the AT will adopt an attack heavy build trying to match the Evolved in fighting capabilities. This can result in serious injury or death of the individual. This will often times send the Evovled into a Savage fury where they will attmept to obliterate all enemies around their fallen family member to allow a revival OR the Evolved will do the same to every enemy within the area before his family member returns from the hospital.

oh so true.....my first /da scrapper teamed with a fire/fire blaster for most of my 38-50 career.....its a shame to run him without that blaster around.

LOL, love the read.

My scrapper being one of many alts (but probaby my next 50), he's definitely a "civilized one", but constantly feels the call of the Wild.

Great post. I understand my scrapper so much better now.

Damn, this made me chuckle a lot

Definite feral here.

I honestly thought I was being inconsiderate when I got upset at people for stealing my kills ("helping" as they say).

As I say to teammates when they're around..."I didn't die...I'm just looking for my gum"

I'm much the same, I'm as savage as they get, but have no problem (or lack of skills) being in a group. I turn on lft and then start soloing things and missions. If someone invites, I join, if not, no big deal.

The other day, I got invited into a group of 7 that was currently in the middle of a wipe. When I got to the mission (which happened to be in my zone) all but the defender was dead, and they were orange and running the other way. I blew by her and laid a quick couple of boots upside the head of the orange lt. following her, and then shot on further upstream, before she could even get turned around.

The death ground was just past one of those tiny circular areas where you can go either way then join up 20 feet further ahead. A yellow, three oranges, and a red boss. Didn't even blink an eye. By the time I was finishing off the yellow (hardest -> wimpiest, see?) the defender was healing me (even though "I was gonna make it!") and two others had returned from the grave and joined in.

Ahhh, life is good...

To keep your Scrap happy please refrain from the following:

-Knocking back of their targets. Scraps hate having to run around because their team mates want to play villian pinball.
-Killing their targets. Scraps like to call something as their own. When fighting Warriors, for instance, a BS Scrap will feel they are honor bound to solo the sword swinging boss of the mob. Let them do so in peace; they take care of the
-Don't anchor something the Scrap wants to kill. Bosses, tough Lieutenants, debuffers, high level foes. Thats the typical order a Scrap will go though when going one on one. AoE scraps will just jump in a mob and break out in violence. Try to anchor something inconspicous near by, otherwise the Scrap will kill it.
-Tanks should not act like Scraps. Scraps scoff at the pathetic damage of the Tanks and feel that Tanks only exist to keep agro away from the squishies in the team. Seeing a Tanker out damage them will hurt the Scrap's pride. Therefore, fighting Tanks should fight away from Scraps. They must make the compromise because they are the more "party friendly" type.
-Scraps may have rabies. Just don't provoke them into biting and point them at enemies.
-Scraps dislike squishies. Scraps hate protecting things. Scraps LOATH BEYOND WORDS having to protect squishes. If you don't want to get killed, stand by the tanker. They like protecting.
-Scraps love killing things. Alot.

Scrapers: What are they thinking?

What do Scraps think about other toons? How do you think your teams scrap feels about you? Find out now!

Heros

Defenders: Scraps like Defenders; they might be enough to convince a Scrap to emerge from the wild and join a team. Debuffs make things die faster, buffs help scraps kill better, healing and rezes keep Scraps killing. However, energy using defenders annoy Scraps, due to Knockback. Scraps are offended by the knocking back of their kills. By sticking to support, and letting the Scrap doing the killing, you can make your Scrap very happy.
All Scaps love bubbles. If you give a Scrap a pretty bubble, it may even help protect you. Possibly. If it isn't killing something else.
Scraps will also protect, on occasion, Rad Defenders. This is because they are usefull against Giant Monsters and Arch Villians. Scraps are angered by their massive regen rates, and regen scraps think that those foes are playing in an earlier issue, and get jealous. During fights with these, a Rad Defender is the only hope, and Scraps know this.
-As a Defender, you may be the only person a Scrap will willingly help. Lucky you.

Controllers: Scraps either consider them useless, ignorable, or wimpy Defenders. Their holds may be useful, but Scraps live for danger; they like the thrill of on coming blows, and surviving them.
-Scraps will ignore you, unless you annoy them.

Blaster: Scraps hate them. They deal more damage then Scraps, are extreamly squishy, agro everything, and complain when Scraps don't protect them. But since they are needed, Scraps tolerate them. But they dont like it. Blappers offend Scraps even more; They deal lots of damage, act like they can fight, die quicker then other blasters, and kill their targets.
-Scraps hate all blasters. Its that simple.

Tankers: Scraps think of Tanks as a walking shield for the squishies. They are as well thought of as a Domesticated Scrap; not at all. Tanks are somewhat tolerated as they can fight and take damage as well. However, if you are a Tanker, let the Scap do their thing; they don't like people helping. The overly helpful nature of the Tanker makes this a common occurence, and thus Scraps dislike Tanks, though nowhere near as much as a Blaster
-Scraps dislike Tanks a small amount, but will endure them.

Other Scraps: Scraps are competitive by nature. Multiple Scraps may try to bite each other, so be careful. Scraps usually will mock each other for weapon choices/secondaries; BS and Katana Scraps are known especially for this. They will usually let each other fight their own fights, but they will try to show off as much as they can, usually by seeing who can kill the most or the highest level. This means that you have a group of people trying to out kill each other on your team; just stay out of the way and watch the fireworks.
-Scraps don't really like each other, but will work "together" as best as they can. Meaning they kill lots of things.

Lobsters and Crabs: Combine the loathing of Blasters, the contempt of Tanks, and the urge for comitition against Scraps.

Villians
Scraps are almost always solo fighters. Fight them as such, and do so with honor. Note that Scraps hate runners. If you are willing to fight a scrap, have the courage to finish the fight; they will not stop until one of you lies dead. Nearly all Scraps are willing to fight to their deaths. You should give them the honor of doing the same.

Brutes: Scraps are every bit as bloodthirsty and as violent as a brute. If you are a Brute, expect Scraps to frequently demand one on one duels. This is a sign of respect; they consider you a worthy foe to test their might.

Master Mind: Scraps like fighting the hoard of foes, but dislike the fact that the MM typically hides or runs off. If you truely want to fight a Scrap, stay in the open and fight honorably. If you do so, the Scrap will show you respect, and consider you, not your army, a worthy foe.

Corrupter: Scraps all long for the chance to kill a Blaster. Now they can. Don't expect any mercy at all.

Dominator: Scraps usually don't care about Dominators. Just stay out of their way and you should be fine.

Stalkers: Scraps hate Stalkers even more then Blasters. Scraps take pride in honorable duels; striking from the shadows and instanly killing your foe is the most dishonorable thing in their minds. Since there is little they can do to see you, and since they don't have time for a counter attack, or heal, Scraps hate Stalkers with the fury of a thousand Headsplitters. If you want the respect of a Scrap, challange it to a true duel: No Assasins Strike or hiding. THey may be so shocked, and impressed, as to grant handycaps to even the fight, such as disableing Intigration, or allowing Insperations.

Have to add that scrappers love teaming with other non-domesticated scrappers. They understand the rules and honor of each other and usually respect it. I've done several TFs with all scrapper teams of 8 set to invincible. Challenging and Fun and full of death, debt and NON STOP ACTION!
