I thought that it would be beneficial to provide a bit of my play style to the discussion. I tend to setup positions from which to defend. Drop Caltrips, Traps, etc leave the bots step in a little pop something and back it into the 'ambush'. If I retain to much agro you'll find me running and gunning in a tight pattern around a designated position. Pop off a shot, strafe to a new location, pop off a new shot....rinse and repeat. Will this work at levels beyond the teens? Beats me.

I can see where some people like the tank role, but thats just not me. I dislike getting hit unless I am a melee character. I can't get into Demon Summoning because its just to close for my pet class mentality.

The current build tossed Triage Beacon for Repair, at this moment I'm hoping its not a mistake. A few of you have posted builds with TB.

So much great advice to work through, even if I manage a proper skill set. I can see many respec mission runs as those skills become properly slotted or skills get moved in and out as my play style exerts itself on the build.

All I can say is thank you all for your very much appreciated advice and comments.
Moving does not work well with Traps as many of the powers are drop and stay. Triage beacon has a long recharge.

I am not saying your will not find respec missions. But what is usual is when your ready to do one.. You won't find it.

Personally I would slot along the line of a build you might like and just replace the SO's with IO's as you get the set.

I hear what Delta_Strider is saying. So here is a build replacing Kick Tough Weave with Photon Grenade, Maneuvers and Tactics. Further Acid Mortar does debuff for resistance and Defense. Web Grenade has a great - Recharge.

If your looking for your pets to fight as you stand back. Then you might want to consider Force Field. Boring as all heck, but your gonna need to cap your pets defenses.

    Otherwise
    1. Your pets WILL NOT stay in the Triage beacon area.
    2. Your pets WILL run all over the place, usually one bot will be so far out he will die before you can do anything to heal him.
    3. Once your non Defense Cap pets are dead, you will be next because your probably not going to work for Defense Cap for yourself.
    4. Your Force Field Generator does not travel as fast as you do. So you will loose defenses while it catches up to you.

    LINK for Defense Cap info:
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=185167

I have played Traps a bit and I build for Defense Cap. I have a 50 Sonic Traps Corruptor. Pretty much a Trap build is the same regardless of what AT has it. You could swap out Mastermind robots for a Corruptor and just pick a Primary and still be in a similar position.

The only reason I use the Sonic part is for picking off wounded mobs. Sleeping a pack of mobs or using the AOE from Sonic if I get a bunch of mobs packed together. And finally I use Sonic when I am in a fast past group where setting up stuff is just being wasted. My only heal is Triage beacon slotted as I have it listed. I solo +1 +8, I can do +2 +8 and +3 +8. But without a doubt +3 +8 takes much LONGER. End result I am playing my Bots as if it where Sonics, they are just extra attacks for me. I'm more worried about my Force Field gen going then the robots.

Also Remember you get these defense even if your bots are not out. You will find there are times players will either kindly or not so kindly ask you NOT to summon all your bots except maybe the last one. People have seen how Mastermind pets can mess up a pull on a SF, myself included. I have been lucky so far not to be that guy.

My point is I know it works. I use. I am not putting up a build because it looks cool. It's tried and tested. Further I'm a nobody. I do not have leet skills. I do not have leet game money. I don't have a leet SG/VG. I'm a solo player. Someone else smarter then me did the math. I just took the time to read it and finally understand it.

Trust me when I say this, when you get more pets they will be running around all over the place.. Now your dealing with 2 or 3 pets.. When you have 6 bots and one bot decides to run past the group your fighting into another group to get in position to attack your target. Why ? Who knows. They just do. But it doesn't matter now, because your bot just pulled another group. Sometimes its not just one bot, sometimes its two bots doing this. Again why, who knows. They just do. The AI is Screwy. But if your controlling the mobs the pets will have less of a tendency to go running around.

I completely understand you have to do your thing. I'm just trying to give you a feel for Masterminds are like. If the pet AI was sharper it would be a fantastic set with a bit more freedom to move around power wise. But at this time I do not think that can be done effectively with the AI the pets have.

Your do loose some Defenses, but your still Smash and Lethal and Ranged cap. Pretty much the big 3 you need. 1 purple inspiration will bring the rest to cap when needed.

Either way good luck and have fun

Why are you looking to get Force Field ? Is it for your pets ?

Or are you just needing Force Field because your running with some friends and plan on doing some Big AV fights / Farming and your looking to Cap them ?

Simple answer would be anything that is putting out Smash and lethal. Robots would be good, oh wait no robots
  3. Use this build and just replace robots with Ninja and have some fun. Just open it up in Mids and just click the Ninja Tab, the pets will be replaced. You can swap out some powers from the PRIMARY ONLY . Just keep an eye on your defenses. Though I am pretty sure they will have no effect, but I didn't check it out to be certain.

I have a Robot FF at 50, Safe Yes.. But it is Boring. As some mentioned

Today the way pets just run around, your best bet is to control the Bad guys not your pets. I think the Pet AI is or has gotten worse and I cannot tell you how many times I and probably many others including yourself maybe have seen Masterminds pets pull aggro at the wrong time from the wrong mobs.

So you have a better chance of Provoking the mobs to attack you while your pets go to town. Plus you can just Drop Time Bombs as it recharges every 8 to 9 seconds.

  5. Here is a build I am working with. If someone can do better, by all means post it so I can take advantage of the improvements as well.

Nutshell you can replace Robot with ANY primary and still get the defense caps. Smashing Lethal and Energy are at 49% ... Cold Fire and Ranged 46% ... AOE 48%... Nutshell you have 2 Positions at Cap and Everything else at cap beyond Negative, Psi and Melee. Melee is not an issue since you have Smash, lethal and Energy at Defense Cap. So if you come across some NPC that does Psi Melee attacks ( Don't think one exist ) Eat a Purple inspiration and everything will be at Defense cap.

This build is a Primer for just about ANY AT that can use Traps.

Basically level up doing the DO, SO thing and slot the powers the way you see them, then buy the IOs needed and replace the SOs. So this way you do not need to do a respec. As your new you probably do not have any free Vet respecs.

Some will notice what they might consider odd slotting.. Perfect example is Caltrops. Where Defense was not needed I slotted for recharge when I could. End result is you can drop a Trip mine every 8 seconds. Between Provoke and Trip Mine you should have not issues holding aggro.

At level 50 the whole concept is you Provoking and Trip mining while the bots attack behind you. Your whole job is making sure the pets do not have aggro.

Please do not follow my level slotting scheme though it is off. If you turn off Scorpion Shield you will see your at Defense cap in several powers before level 41. I would work my way to obtaining Defense cap ASAP. Once you obtain that its pretty easy and will see your the last man standing when stuff goes bad.

  6. You could add the stun proc to it. That would pretty much have people stop asking

I say if your on Freedom server, by all means DO NOT give them SB. This way I can get more teams fighting over me.

Speed Boost last 2 minutes. A mission can last 30 minutes, maybe 40. Forget about a Task Force. You do the math on saying thank you every 2 minutes.

There is a point of being polite, but another having it be an obsession.

I feel Speed Boosting is like getting a rep. You have players that only SB tanks. You have players that sort of SB some players sometimes. You have players that SB at the beginning of a mission and nothing else.

Then you have the player that SB everyone and ID as well. That's me.
Nutshell I get all AT's asking me to group when I log in. I get my Merits for the day when I log in my kin or my AE tickets. No other AT beyond a Tank / Brute might have that ability. Every AT should be as wanted or needed as a Kin is. Sadly it is not. But with every great AT comes greater responsibility.

I mean really if someone drops in front of you and then resses back up its your job to hit them with ID to remove the stun. How many times have you died because you got re-killed while stunned.

It is all part of the game and part of the class. If it is that annoying then I would suggest simply removing SB from your powers and post it in your notes for LFT. I DO NOT HAVE SPEED BOOST.

If you missed a SB on someone, they shouldn't complain. If they do then I think everyone would agree that you forget them yet again on the next round of SBing. If I get too involved in fighting sometimes you might have to give me a reminder to use SB. It happens. But I will not take someone asking me for SB because they are at the bottom of the team list and I just didnt get to them fast enough.

End result you have to find a reasonable compromise. I think yours is too extreme. Usually at the end of a mish you will get people say Hey thanks for the buffs that was great.. And others will echo the same sentiments.
  7. I pretty much agree with many of the things said here, as I pretty much made a similar post several months back.

Devices is a set that used to be powerful, maybe too powerful. And then it was neutered. Sadly they went to such extremes that the use / popularity of the set went down. So no one was complaining or not that many anymore compared to some other sets. People just jumped onto other toons because the game was still new and fresh. It is similar to why you do not see many earth trollers. Many would complain that the effects would mess up their graphic cards or grouping with one would. So why run an AT that no one will pick up because you cause them to crash or lag out. Sadly this set has sat like this for almost 6 years with minimal improvements. Even going from Gun Turret to Gun Drone hurt the ability to Toe bomb. At least back then you would toe bomb and then jump back to where your Turret was.

Cloaking Device at one time was going to have a damage component to it. But they couldn't get it working to their satisfaction before going live so the canned it but left the language in the description. I think it took them almost a year to remove the wording from the description because people who where new kept complaining that they did not see this added damage mentioned.

Traps is what Device should have been. They simply removed the weak components from Devices and replaced it with better powers to make traps.

Unfortunately squeaky wheel gets the grease and the squeak coming from Device isn't loud enough to hear for the devs.

I am not going to waste anyone's time posting up my idea's as they have been mentioned already by someone here or in the dozens of other threads on these forums in the past regarding this issue.

Again I would take any updates to this aging set.
  8. Before we even start do you have the in game money for all those purples your looking to buy ? Your talking about 100 million per purple IO in some of those sets..

Other then that I think some powers are over slotted and I don't think you need recharge since your powers are already low in recharge time overall. I think Howling Twilight might be the longest power you have with recharge time of 90 seconds.

Just food for thought Purple does not always mean good or better.

I think we can squeeze more defenses or resistance out of the build.

But lets talk money first. Personally I'm a cheapskate. Even if I had that kind of money I would never spend it on one build. But that is me, Mr. Cheapo..

  10. Robot Traps because of the damage type.

Smashing and Lethal are most common damages types and of course have the highest defenses from. So I would stay away from Smashing Lethal attacks and also build defenses to be protected from it.

Traps with the standard pet slotting offers that protection, plus much more.

Traps is the best secondary available to any AT not just Masterminds.

If you build to be able to solo, then being in a group makes you that much more tougher.

That's masterminding in a nutshell. Not only do you have endless hordes of enemies to defeat, you also have your own pets' incompetence to overcome. To some, that is more rewarding.

Still, a "Stay, or else" command would be nice. I suspect that the attacking AI scripts override the command obedience scripts. One never quite knows how several groups of discrete code will interact until they do.

As another poster said, Ranged henchmen with melee attacks will resort to them when their other powers are recharging. It seems to me that the Marksmen type enemies (Council, I believe) stay at range no matter what (quite annoying as a brute or tanker), how did they do that? Could that AI be applied to ranged-preference henchmen?
IF both pets stayed or charged in I could go either way, but they don't. Instead you will have one charging in and another at range. Again I have cornered orange and yellow con mobs and spammed web grenade on them and just cannot figure out what event would cause a pet to rush in.

Have a pet attack when your out of range of a mob and look at when he begins his ranged attack. It is very far away. Granted you can see some have a snipe attack. But even the standard attack is a very long range shot.

I really have tried numerous ways to see where the glitch was. I tried to see if was terrain or objects blocking some how. I put pets on passive and then went to defensive while I was getting attacked, I tried summoning them while getting attack, while the mob was held at range, ETC. Really there are not many choices to pick from. I honestly have been trying to figure it out and hoped of posting I FIGURED IT OUT GIVE ME A GOLD STAR. But no luck.
  12. @ Je_saist

Can you ever post a thread without being insulting or condescending ?

If you weren't so busy letting everyone know how smart you are with computer architecture and took the time to read the post. You would have seen I have tried every limited possible combination. I further re-posted other attempts when the mob was held and cornered.

And still I cannot.. I repeat I cannot stop the pets from running into melee range.

From my understanding the last live patch notes where to suppose to fix this. It clearly did not. So I do post a bug report explaining that.

But OH wait you didn't read that part. Instead you just wanted to spew more insults. Whining and Frustration are 2 different things. I can be Frustrated with the way the AI works. Whining would be coming here just posting I hate MM they stink.. I quit...

I didn't do that. I expressed my issues. listed out what I have done to try to see if it was something I was doing wrong. And then I asked if anyone here had a clue and could help out. Pretty much what these forums are about.

Yet again it is obvious you do not have a clue or are willing to help out.. Instead you want to babble.

Yes, I said babble on your perceived notion of me or anyone else wanting NPC AI implemented into the mastermind system.

I find little use of you coming here and making such a out of topic long winded discussion related to nothing we are discussing here. And then on top of that not even post something that might even be considered a hint of assistance to me or anyone else here.

You could have taken the time to explain how you do it on your Mastermind. Posted Images.. Video links.. But nothing.

Do you even have a mastermind ?

But hey if I post an issue about my video card or my processor in the Mastermind forums, I will gleefully wait for your assistance.

To the rest I am sorry. You can look back at ANY thread I post. I do not do these types of things. It is obvious Je_Saist is upset from a previous thread and is just on a troll attack.
  13. What was killing me with all of this is sadly the the look of the toon. I was trying to go for the little kid with a pet demon look. But even after getting some ideas the only way to make a little kid toon it appears is to cover the face in a helmet. I ended up just creating a Robot Traps and will make the 2nd build a pet-less build. Or I would have to go female with the school girl outfit. I usually do not play female toons unless they have some advantage. EG in DAOC I played a Lurikeen female because that was the smallest race and great for helping me hide and for PvP vs larger enemy. Though I might just suck it up and play the female toon for once in this game.

I have my petless demon/Traps MM to 18, but holding on deleting him yet. Though he is stripped clean atm. I have another DS/Pain at 26.

I have been playing with traps for a bit, so I have a decent feel for that set. I have it on a corruptor Sonic/Traps. I pretty much solo just by using Traps powers. I use Sonic to pick off near dead mobs. And the Sleep to hold groups of mobs when solo farming AE missions.

    @Anonymoose

Pets are just out of control. I had time to actually test the tier one pets and even with a mob in a corner and held with web grenade the Robot pet STILL charges in to melee range. There is NOTHING I can do to control this. I used the keypad commands and added a all stay. I can yell stay till the cows come home, they still run in.

    @ Madam_Enigma

What was your Secondary going Pet-less ? I have looked at all the other secondaries and I have to say that Traps is the ONLY secondary you can pull this off with. Again only reason because it has it all. That Triage Becon slotted with 4 heal/recharge along with IO set bonuses to regen / recovery make a difference later on.

At level 18 I have 16% - 18% Defense. Once you get to the High 30s percentage wise it really starts to make a difference. Sadly Trip mine is at 35 So it is a long ride to get a decent DPS attack.

I expect it to be much a solo run. But you know once I get to 41 where I hit Defense cap. It will be pretty cool to show people what it can do. Many, many players just do not understand the defense cap and how game breaking it is. So it is at this point where I can pull out a petless MM and demonstrate how a Pet-Less MM can solo at +1 +8.

Make anything other then a Mastermind. You will be micro managing much more then you might expect. Unless they really take a serious look at the AI and controls.

But regardless Robots because of the DPS type.

Seriously, though the MM aesthetic is cool, and i've enjoyed the ones i've played, i end up sticking with other toons as well. After a run with a MM, logging in a brute feels like i've reeled in a bunch of gangling, hard-to-coordinate limbs into a tight bundle of efficient destruction.
You know, very well put. I think you hit it right on the head. You basically can do the same as a mastermind with another toon without all the hassle.

The need to make the controlling less of a hassle.

Or as I mentioned before allow me to choose ONE pet that builds upon itself.

    /kin advice?

I have a DP Kin at 50 with S / L Defense cap and something else I think. Not home to give you a straight answer. But I can tell you I am soloing +1 +8 missions and AE missions. Again not that it means much, but its decent when I want to solo and get some tickets. The build is cheap also.

I will say sometimes the KB of DP is nice. especially with the Tier 3 attack which is Knock down at the end. Think it is called Hail of bullets. When stuff goes bad and many are getting hurt, I jump into the crowd and use to to knock many of the mobs down and then use a heal to hopefully get some players back up.

Though I use either the Fire for extra DPS that does not do KB or the Debuff one. I just find no use for the cold attack. Either I Debuff to help the team or help do damage.

I do not find the damage lacking of DP as some may say, but it could be because I am using FS before opening up with my AOE's having a 10 stack helps the dps.
  17. I think the only way around this is by having Provoke. Its just silly that you need work arounds to make something work properly.

I have been building up a Robot Traps and even at level 6 with one robot and me using Web Grenade the pet STILL runs in.. The mob can't move and the Pet STILL RUNS IN after 1 or 2 shots. Unless the endurance bar on the pets is wrong, he is still at FULL endurance when it is doing this. I just have zero clue why the pet finds the need to run in. Of course once the pet runs into range the Mob ends up killing him with melee attacks.

I make sure to play him every time I am on the game and I report it as a bug every time I am on him.

Add me to the list of people confused at trying to optimize a petless build (completely conflicting goals?), but I certainly won't kick one from a team if they've got good buff/debuff mojo. Honestly, most PuGs, I wish I had a teammate with Melt Armor up every spawn rather than moar fugly demons.

That said, do make sure you're in touch with your inner defender, because buff/debuffs will be key to both teaming and soloing.

Have you thought about rolling /storm instead of /thermal? Since you're already treading into 50% annoys team, 50% surprisingly good support territory. I rolled a whip/stormy last month, good times, plays like a kinky version of my storm defender, though needs more slotting to reach the broken, er I mean, really good, debuff values I'm used to.
The OP mentioned he has a 50 thermal Robot. He is just looking for a 2nd petless build for it. I would guess being on Virtue where he is from it would be for Roleplay reasons.

Other then that some people do it because they can. Everyone is allowed to do what they wish with there account.

As long as people are polite and semi civil I see no reason why if you know not to help someone out. The OP was trying. It is obvious he / she is still learning about IOs and what they are there for. Hopefully the OP will see and learn something about how and why IOs where placed and maybe one day pass along some insight and knowledge to another player.

I am sure the Devs didn't expect to see what they do today with the AE farms. I am pretty sure that was the last thing they expected or wanted

Yea that is the tough part.

I kept moving the Defense sets down the level chain. You do have Hover at 28 though so you can get you to high spots in Grandville.

Unfortunately MM are one of those types of Specs that do not flesh out well until they are close to 50. Where as Tanks / Brutes can "Tank in the 30s" persay.

Believe it or not I was even trying to get rid of Fly for something else. But I needed it for the defense slots.
  20. This build will get you VERY close to Ranged Defense cap at level 28 But at level 41 you will be at Ranged, Smash, Lethal and Energy Defense cap.

Basilisk Gaze can be expensive so you could Take one out of Acid Mortar and one out of Triage beacon and six slot Poison Trap with Essence of Curare for the Ranged Defense bonus instead.

  21. I had to replace one of the Reactive armors with an Endurance IO.

Sadly the build has a higher end drain then expected. Further even with the Debuffs it has, it does not seem to be performing as well as my Sonic Traps or even DP Kin. And all are at defense cap. It just seems like this toon is taking a bigger beating.

Trap is what is soloing the AVs not the pets. I know your saying what ?

Here is the skinny. Grab this concept and the game becomes easy mode.

    Defense Cap...

    Understand the Defense Cap.
How to get the Defense Cap.
IF you know this already, then you have your answers and the rest is moot. But if you sort of heard about it but never took the time to understand read on.

Dark does work well at getting you to Defense cap. But Traps does it a bit better and Traps has everything else.. DPS, Debuff, Heal, Temp hold ( poison Trap ) and of course Protection.

Ideally many of the mobs do Smashing Lethal type damage. So you want to get your defenses to 45% which is the soft cap.

There is also something called Positional damage. Which is Ranged, Melee and AOE. Ranged is the big one here. So if you where going to get anything Capped here it would be Ranged at 45%. Since its the most common type of attack.

Both Positional and Type over lap. So if someone is shooting you with a ranged energy blast and you have only 10% energy defense but are capped at 45% Ranged Defense. The Ranged Defense wins. So more then likely you will not get hit. There are of course other variables and such.

Nutshell with all of this is 45% is the magic number you want to see when using Mids Hero builder.

So now back to what your asking. With Acid mortar debuffing the AV. You Taunting / Provoking the AV on you.. And your pets 6 slotted to do damage. Then add in Photons etc.. Your debuffing and DPS all at the same time.. Plus your dropping Trip mine every time it recharges, which will be about every 9 seconds with a simple decent recharge rate obtained through IOs. And Triage Becon 4 slotted with Heal/Recharge IO's you will get a Triage Becon of about 10 to 15 second over lap. Again No crazy IO builds.. Decent stuff at a decent cost.. No purples for sure.

Traps Anything is win. It is that good. 4 guys with Traps whatever can do anything this game offers.

Here is the reality if a schelp like me can run +3 +8 Sami AE solo with no issue anyone can. You just need to take the time to read and understand the Defense cap thing. That has to be the biggest known secret that people just don't talk about.

Its so good I have been respecing all my toons going broke building around the defense cap when possible.
  24. After getting home I pulled up your build and was playing around with it. Here are some of the issues and some observations.

    1. Simply do you really have that kind of infamy to be playing around with ? Or are you just putting together a build regardless of cost ? Some of those IO's are very expensive, even if your just placing a bid and waiting for that bid to come. Your talking around 200 million for some IOs you listed.

    2. The use of inventions is to obtain something from the set bonuses. Yes Proc's can be nice in certain things. But not everything is worth slotting with Inventions. Some are better off being served by slotting with regular defense or heal IOs. Slotting Maneuvers with Defense buff sometimes is better then using some set like luck of the gambler.

In your build it seems you went for shiny. It looked shiny and expensive, so it must be good. Sadly its not always true. Personally I do not think Purples sets are worth much, unless you have everything else covered. So yes if a power is not being used to help you towards gaining the defense cap then it would be fine to slot it with some purple set for some higher recharge, hp, damage buff.

    3. After looking over Thermal a bit I can say many of the powers are group friendly. But you might have issues getting a group because of the pet-less issue. So if you start taking away the powers for groups only. Your down to 3 powers from thermal and 3 from Robots. You would have to take sets like fitness, fighting, Speed, Leaping and leviathan Mastery. You should be able to cover Positional Range and Energy and Negative Defense Caps. AOE would be close behind. I can get you to Smashing Lethal Defense cap, which would probably be better since most mobs do that type of DPS. Just would be a bit more work and taking Mace Mastery for Scorpion shield.

The build would have to be worked to obtain Defense caps as Early as possible. Once you get that dying less will make it not much of a struggle. Otherwise if you go the route of DPS first, leveling will be painful.

    4. End results - Personally I think Traps is the be all end all atm. Simply if you look at traps compared to Thermal. You can use EVERY Power in traps. Traps has protection, Healing, DPS, Debuffs, Minor hold ( Poison trap ). Where as you would have attacks like whirlwind, boxing, Kick and flurry.

I had my heart set on making a Demon summoning ( for the whip ) Traps toon. But my concept atm is not fleshing out with the look I want. Nutshell I can't get the right costume I would like. So I am considering Pet-less Robot Traps. But I will probably go the route of 50s full Robot Traps swap IOs from my Robot FF and use the 2nd build for a petless build.

So if you really have the game money to play around with I would MM / Traps. Once you hit defense cap and have trip mines it will pretty much all you will be doing anyways. Basically you will be walking up to a bunch of mobs and dropping a trip mine as they swing and miss.

Think about what your really looking to do and I am willing to help you out with some ideas and tweaking up the builds.
  25. Your main goal has to be to get some sort of defense cap. Either type or positional. Try if you can for either Ranged Positional or Smashing Lethal type.

Once you get that the rest does not matter. But look at the build after you have that cap and see if it is of any use to someone or yourself as a solo build.

I'm not too sharp on thermal atm without looking at the power set a bit in mids to get a feel for it.

Sadly Traps is pretty much the only set I can say clearly can be done petless because you have the ability to get to Defense cap AND you have a decent attack of Trip Mine which you could literally just cycle over and over again if your defense cap is high enough.

So you would have to be set up for Defense cap and good healing assuming thermal is built for that.
