DS/Traps or DS/Dark
i would say so - demons are meele and therefore you forced to run after them in case of /traps FFG, otherwise they will have no protection.
/dark is better choice IMO.
I love Dark...a lot...and that's my problem..I've done it TO DEATH..so I've forced myself to go traps instead. So far honestly I'm glad I did. Traps is a SOLID set. The thing to remember about demons is they are pretty self sufficient...generally. You don't necessarily NEED a set like Dark to keep them alive. Dark has a lot going for it and if you've never taken a dark up to the top it would mesh well....but, not to not help with your confusion, traps is a good pick too.
The Porcelain God - DarkKinetics Corruptor
Meat Juice - DarkDarkSoul Brute
Pretty and Strong - Do you really have to ask?
I have a bots/dark...I had a merc/traps (only to 38) that I wasnt feeling too much.
I dont know...still confused...bah maybe Ill just make some sample builds and see what I like better...
/dark works real well, I enjoyed it all the way up to 50.
I have a bots/dark 50 right now...are demons better than Bots?
Was speculating...cant decide.
Can they both solo AVs?
IDK
Confusion is my nature today
I think bots are better than demons. They don't complain when you strap a bomb to their backs and blow them up.
If you haven't tried storm, storm masterminds are lots of fun. I have a thugs/storm and I'm mulling over the idea of rerolling my necro/pain to necro/storm.
I've tried 'em all though and I have a 50 of everything.
My favorite combinations are:
Thugs/Storm
Bots/Traps (bots over all others because bots are better behaved and tend to stay in the FFG while still dealing out some nice damage)
Thugs/Dark
Demons/Dark
Thugs/Bubbles (or Bots/Bubbles)
Poison is powerful against single tough targets but can be frustrating to level up, at least in my opinion but I don't think you can ever go wrong with any combination. Just go with your gut feeling. Everything else are just our opinions.
Good luck.
Which one to do....mmm...IM undecided. DS/Dark seem to blend well together...IDK....
**Pulls hair out** Anyone? Ideas? Thoughts? |
Traps has the advantage that it gives you very good defense and mezz resistance, so you can use your whip attacks and not worry as much about aggro.

Here is the skinny. Grab this concept and the game becomes easy mode.
Defense Cap...
Understand the Defense Cap.
How to get the Defense Cap.
IF you know this already, then you have your answers and the rest is moot. But if you sort of heard about it but never took the time to understand read on.
Dark does work well at getting you to Defense cap. But Traps does it a bit better and Traps has everything else.. DPS, Debuff, Heal, Temp hold ( poison Trap ) and of course Protection.
Ideally many of the mobs do Smashing Lethal type damage. So you want to get your defenses to 45% which is the soft cap.
There is also something called Positional damage. Which is Ranged, Melee and AOE. Ranged is the big one here. So if you where going to get anything Capped here it would be Ranged at 45%. Since its the most common type of attack.
Both Positional and Type over lap. So if someone is shooting you with a ranged energy blast and you have only 10% energy defense but are capped at 45% Ranged Defense. The Ranged Defense wins. So more then likely you will not get hit. There are of course other variables and such.
Link for more insight :http://cityofheroes.wikia.com/wiki/Defense
Nutshell with all of this is 45% is the magic number you want to see when using Mids Hero builder.
So now back to what your asking. With Acid mortar debuffing the AV. You Taunting / Provoking the AV on you.. And your pets 6 slotted to do damage. Then add in Photons etc.. Your debuffing and DPS all at the same time.. Plus your dropping Trip mine every time it recharges, which will be about every 9 seconds with a simple decent recharge rate obtained through IOs. And Triage Becon 4 slotted with Heal/Recharge IO's you will get a Triage Becon of about 10 to 15 second over lap. Again No crazy IO builds.. Decent stuff at a decent cost.. No purples for sure.
Traps Anything is win. It is that good. 4 guys with Traps whatever can do anything this game offers.
Here is the reality if a schelp like me can run +3 +8 Sami AE solo with no issue anyone can. You just need to take the time to read and understand the Defense cap thing. That has to be the biggest known secret that people just don't talk about.
Its so good I have been respecing all my toons going broke building around the defense cap when possible.

This build will get you VERY close to Ranged Defense cap at level 28 But at level 41 you will be at Ranged, Smash, Lethal and Energy Defense cap.
Basilisk Gaze can be expensive so you could Take one out of Acid Mortar and one out of Triage beacon and six slot Poison Trap with Essence of Curare for the Ranged Defense bonus instead.

I kept moving the Defense sets down the level chain. You do have Hover at 28 though so you can get you to high spots in Grandville.
Unfortunately MM are one of those types of Specs that do not flesh out well until they are close to 50. Where as Tanks / Brutes can "Tank in the 30s" persay.
Believe it or not I was even trying to get rid of Fly for something else. But I needed it for the defense slots.

Dark does work well at getting you to Defense cap. But Traps does it a bit better and Traps has everything else.. DPS, Debuff, Heal, Temp hold ( poison Trap ) and of course Protection. |
DPS: Tar Patch debuffs damage resistance pretty well. (Not quite as good as Acid Mortar, since it does both damage resistance and defense.)
Heal: Both you and fluffy have a very powerful near proximity heal, with the disadvantage being that it is prone to miss.
Temp Hold: Petrifying Gaze isn't an AOE, but its recharge is 16 seconds instead of a minute and a half.
Protection: Shadow Fall is not as good as Force Field Generator, but you've got quite a few powers that debuff the enemies' attacks, which is just about as good as having more defense yourself. (Your targeted heal, Darkest Night, and Fearsome Stare) Fluffy perpetually debuffs every mob that gets close to him down by -30 attack (more if you enhance it), which will help if you fall short of total defense cap.
The main thing Traps does well and Dark can't compete with is Detonator, and the fact the Force Field Generator shields you from Hold, Stun, and Immobilize. It's nice not to get mezzed.
Both Positional and Type over lap. So if someone is shooting you with a ranged energy blast and you have only 10% energy defense but are capped at 45% Ranged Defense. The Ranged Defense wins. So more then likely you will not get hit. There are of course other variables and such. |
The advantage of Defense by Damage Type is that most attacks have more than one damage type, and the game always chooses the most favorable. So if an Arachnos Widow's Dart attack deals both lethal and toxic, and your lethal defense is better than your toxic defense, the game will use your lethal defense.
The drawback to Defense by Damage Type is that, insofar as I have seen, there is no such thing as Defense vs. Toxic, so any purely toxic attacks will always bypass a Damage Type Based Defense. (Such as Zombies Projectile Vomit, for example.) That's not a serious problem for Demons, though, since most of the resist Toxic damage pretty well.
Nutshell with all of this is 45% is the magic number you want to see when using Mids Hero builder. |
The calculation is pretty complex, I have a spreadsheet somewhere and the magic number is 44.5 believe it or not. People just round up.
You can check the combat logs to see the enemy's tohit.
Which one to do....mmm...IM undecided. DS/Dark seem to blend well together...IDK....
