If your into Device I would suggest to go Traps instead. That is all I am going to say as anything else will suck me into a Device debate.
If you want to go Device I would suggest going Range cap hover blaster style and forgo Trip mines as the build will not allow it to be picked up. You will need Cardiac incarnate for endurance issues but personally having one it is pretty dam great. There is a thread by nethergoat labeled retrofitting AR Device or something along those lines. I have it bookmarked on my home machine. Or you could do a search for Nethergoat in these forums. It might be one of the last few post he made here so it should pop up. If you can afford the 2 billion gladiator IO then I would go his build as it opens up a few more slots.
Otherwise I would suggest Nrg for the benefits you know it will give you. -

I think with just 20-ish range def you are still going to need Clarion, though, so middling ranged def doesn't seem that useful to me.
I usually use the Alpha slot for the builds short comings. EG my range cap hover blaster AR Device was just too short on endurance so I went Clarion. With the newer Agility I need to see as that might help me as well now. So I might have went Agility with my TA Archer, but just don't recall. Now a days I seem to just be building to 50 and incarnating the builds and then looking to build something else to 50.
I'm actually at the point where I need to decide if I want to level up some of the lower level toons or delete them or I will have to buy more character slots. -

Edit: Oh, also, use Flash Arrow, especially against AVs. It's an unresistable debuff, so it is just as good as defense.
At higher levels and the incarnate type missions your of course noticing that not only is S/L minimal but of course they cheat with the defense reducing attacks.
Personally I went range cap hover blaster type on my TA Archer. I find that I can solo many mob types at 4/8 setting. Which allows me the ability now to farm AE missions and regular missions as needed. Of course as many I am not soloing Malta on 4/8 as many are not doing that. There are just very tough mob groups that many are not soloing on a 4/8 setting and that is a given. There are some that can and I know with my Huntsman build with perma pets and barrier can solo 4/8 Malta. But cycling through radio missions to get a group of council, freakshow or CoTs is not that difficult. I know my TA Archer has a radio mission of CoTs I use on 4/8 setting to get TIP missions and was able to pull out 3 purple drops over the last few months. So this stuff is all possible.
I think that Flash arrow also helps shore up my defenses against debuffs which as I mentioned happens in the new incarnate missions.
The new changes only boosts my build allowing me to lock down mobs with the sleep changes so I am getting hit even less now as I can lock down some mobs with sleep and benefit from range defenses.
As you can see everyone has a different opinion on either defenses or recharge. I would rather give up 20 seconds of recharge and be defense capped knowing I can survive the onslaught of incoming attacks. Again I am completely discussing solo here, because being part of a team means nothing. What I mean about that is on a team you will have enough buffs, debuffs and damage handle 4/8 and of course incarnate stuff usually. But knowing I can handle 4/8 on a team means those 7 other players are just extra for me. As that defense capped tank,brute,scrapper is thinking the same thing. Further there are so many incarnate slotted people now that usually 4 or 5 players are blasting out a judgement attack against a group of helpless 4/8 setting mobs. -
I was on a BAF with 3 players that had them.. I thought someone was doing the howl emote. After the 10th howl I asked because it was ANNOYING.. Once I was told it was the pets I had to shut my volume off.
These Devs really, really, really know how to beat a dead horse with this one. If a person loves the howl that much create a command that allows the player to have the pet emote the howl after the first 2 times.
The more players that level up these dam pets the more annoying it is going to be everywhere. I have a DS MM and even I am respectful of others and either dismiss them or have them emote drinking to keep them quiet.
And yes anything other then black make it look like a gray dog with some sort of odd color hanging over it.

Lets give them some sort of new demon or some sort of existing npc just recolored.
Nah, give them a dog !! Didn't you see how many bought the vanity dog pet in the market !? They will LOVE this... And give him that 10 yard stare and smiley face the vanity pet dog has.. -

Its easy to have both (and pick of epic/Patron) on a defender, but very hard on corruptors.
Traps is Traps is Traps. Regardless of AT if you can use Traps the build is the same from the Traps aspect and the defensive powers picked from the standard pools. You then pick your attack powers and slot them accordingly with appropriate sets to obtain the numbers your short on.

Personally I would suggest you just compare Corruptor VS Defender.
Just bring them up side by side and look at the numbers. You will see that Defenders get better Debuff values from powers and better defense numbers. If you look at the base value of full auto you will see that the difference is 16 points in favor of Corruptors.
The advantage is with all the defense powers slotted with 3 SOs you will almost be defense capped. If you pick up scorpion shield you can be capped to Smash Lethal and Energy and just having purple inspirations will cap you to everything else.
Being in SOs I think you would be better off being defender and having the ability to widdle away the mobs via greater defense debuffs values and being closer to defense cap then a corruptor can.
Again no rocket science here just pull up mids and look at the numbers. I think that protection will out weigh the dps increase. -

Read the links in my signature if you want to actually understand how it works and the importance.
The good thing about Dark is that it does provide a -ToHit Debuff which is pretty much added on like defenses. So a -ToHit Debuff of -10 would improve all your defenses by 10 points. The BIG issue with -ToHit Debuffs is that they can be resisted, most of the time they are not but when your banking on the -ToHit Debuff to cap out and it is resisted you can notice the incoming damage difference.
Because of Thermal you are dealing with resistance bonuses instead so you might be best getting some defense numbers and working more toward resistance capping. Nutshell getting Range defense in mid 30s and getting resistance to 50% along with the ability to heal should prove very useful to you. Of course defense cap plus 50% resistance is better but you will probably have to compromise with the build. -
Personally I think your short changing yourself if your not defense capped with Traps. Being capped to Ranged, Melee and AOE really makes Traps a super set to be playing. It pretty much is incarnate slotting before incarnates came out.

It really doesn't matter what the enemy group is at +4/x8, by the time they've recovered from Footstomp you've already dropped Burn and hit them with Dark Obliteration, and I'm pretty sure the couple of Lt's and bosses that remain will die soon enough.

I would say some sort of Traps toon because of the all the mix they give you buff and debuff wise.
Traps Fire or Traps Sonic ?
Because your challenge includes both range and melee many melee types are out.
Traps does as Dechs mentioned Trip Mine and Time Bomb which are melee attacks. Maybe not the best but I think when comparing it to others ATs I think its a winner because you could get the best melee from a scrapper per say but you would be loosing out in the range department. So my thoughts are its the best compromise if that makes sense. -

I decided to try tankerminding now that the new MM set is out, so I could get some use out of the def vs AOE proc, but my pets are nowhere near softcap even with it, and I've been having some trouble with enemies just decimating them out from under me, even after I get most of the aggro on me. -
For those that don't know I am committed to posting this post once a month in an attempt to get some attention to this issue. Sadly I just do not see why it is such an issue for Developers. I'm not going to be foolish to say that with a few lines of code this could be fixed, but I find it odd that they can redo an entire zone but just can't fix this LONG standing issue with this power. I completely understand this might not be a big issue since it is a power not used or picked up that much, but again it is not used or picked up much because of the issues it has or issues newer players quickly learn it has.

Group Fly is a very nice power, but very unusable in a group the way it is ATM.
Here are a few suggestions:
1. Allow players to click the buff off
2. Allow for a option in the interface right below the teleport option to disable group fly.
Gripe: I have zero clue why they could make an option in the interface for Teleport ( Single or Group ) but not for Group Fly.
Understanding that making changes to the interface seem to be a big deal. So I think suggestion number 3 would be a decent temp fix for at least the next 3 to 5 years until you guys figure out how to do it in the interface.
3. Have Null the Gull hanging around EVERY TRAINER in EVERY ZONE. At least with this if someone decided to use Group Fly now they would have some leg to stand on telling the person you can go to any trainer in any zone and look for the sea gull near him or her to fix your issue. Instead of telling someone go to Pocket D and look for a sea gull on a truck. Especially when they might not have the power to get there and have no clue what in the world Pocket D is.
Now of course that is not a fix compared to having it in a interface because you cannot reach Null the Gull inside a mission or doing an incarnate mission like you can your interface. But least its something. Its a start in the right direction. -
Were you trying to pick a power that you normally could not have at a particular level. Example You can pick the medicine pool at level 3, but I think the lowest level is 4. I kept getting a respec fail because of it. End result I had to pick another power and then I could pick up Aid Other from the medicine pool.
After my 2nd attempted respec I started to troubleshoot to figure it out. It took me over 1 hour of wasted time to figure it out. -

Personally I only have 2 attacks I can use on all my blasters. My builds just do not allow me to pick up all the low end attacks or slot them to there full potentials.

Again your saying that every blaster has to pick up clarion ? I can't pick up the heal ? I'm Pigeon holed into Clarion ? I'm not even going to discuss that your talking about having to do incarnate missions and unlock this ability just to get it. What about the other 49 levels of the game ? Do F2P even get to do incarnate stuff ? I don't think so.
Come on, you can't pigeon hole a person into a particular build just to satisfy this Mez issue. If that were the fact then might as well have the Devs just pick my toons and powers for me. While they are at it they might as well slot the powers how they seem fit.
The point MD brought up is no other AT has to specifically build their toons to obtain this protection as it is already built in.
Even with my idea at least your would be afforded some protection because regardless how you build with IOs your going to obtain some defenses just based on the IO set bonuses.
I will agree on a team it might be a bit different, but again on a team everyone excels a bit more don't they ? So even a non defense capped scrapper normally would be super great on a team with a Force Field player capping him out.
But to say you have to pick these powers or build your toon this way to get that protection is wrong. Which is pretty much what your saying.

If your playing on a 0/0 or 0/1 setting then you should not have any issues regarding mez. If you do its a personal problem not a game problem.
BUT
If you go higher up the difficulty ladder then yes mez does play a larger part and matters much more for blasters. No blaster can kill off enough mobs on a 2/8 setting to stay alive while mezzed.
I think that your largest Positional Defense number should be used against Mez protection and not just Range Defense. Simply AOE and Melee defense should be considered Range Defense vs Mez type attacks which just happen to be mostly ranged attacks. This way a Melee Defense too has the same chances against mez attacks as a Range defense blaster does. -
I don't think there are too many. I think each issue should be addressed solely on its own merit.
Personally my only issue with Blasters is mez protection or the lack thereof. I have giving my opinion on that issue and have expressed my idea on what I think could be done to fix it. -

Long, Long, LONG story short. They are useless and lack an reasonable common sense. I feel like I am calling some third world country tech support when I have to deal with one. I really just curse to myself when I have to hit that support button.
I agree with some of the posters here. I know as well they have all the logs and even transaction logs from the market. I don't think anyone would have issue if it took some time to correct the condition as long as it's eventually corrected.
You know sometimes you don't really have to arrest someone to fix a problem. Sometimes just talking to a person and letting them know that your aware of the situation will fix it.
Who hasn't heard a cop say once in their lives "IF I HAVE TO COME BACK HERE AGAIN ! ". Even if it's from someone else story.
I've been blessed with 2 really good kids who 99% of the time cause no issues and are honestly smarter then me when I was their age ( okay even now sometimes at my age).
BUT
1% of the time they forget and think they think our home is a democracy instead of a dictatorship and they get out of line with my wife. My wife then just brings them back down to earth reminding them she has daddy's phone number on speed dial and will call him so they can explain the issue to me. Even then occasionally I get a phone call and have some crying kid on the phone with my wife in the background saying "Go ahead tell him. You wanted to talk to daddy, go ahead tell him."
End result I can't understand what they are saying over the crying and my wife's phone gets a bunch of snot all over it. But the condition is corrected as the kids now know their idea wasn't good.
If the GM would have just attempted to address this other person, that might have been enough for that other person to be persuaded to send the money back.
People under estimate that "Oh Crap, they know factor" . -
This is with INCARNATE AGILITY ON . I usually do not post with incarnates on as it gives people a bit of misinformation if they don't catch it. In this instance I am showing with it on because at level 50 and having Agility Incarnate active it shows that you could remove several slots from powers and reslot others. So you could free up 2, 3 or even 4 slots and place them in channel gun or some other attack.
With Agility Incarnate your perma pets except one which is one second off perma. If you can slot one purple set for the recharge you will be perma pet on that one pet.
If you look at the pets slotting its for a reason. Basically your pets will be at 20% resistance and 30% defense from your buffs. Of course if you went Barrier which I would suggest it will make your pets super pets. I have barrier on a huntsman build and it makes the pets massive.
Of course your limited in attacks.
The 2nd build is defense capped with all attacks no pets. It shows 1 point off defense cap on paper but I am capped out in game, don't as me. No clue.

Unfortunately your idea will not work.
The market works like this.
The lowest selling price wins the highest bid above price. So the person selling Brass for 1.99 Billion would win before you. -

Council/rikti/carnies/malta and a lot of other high level faction have mobs with ranged mezzes that don't have an S/L component and I found myself stopped cold exactly where I DON'T want to be when I was running my S/L softcapped build back when I first started IOing my blaster. It's even more glorious when you are up against a faction with a lot of AoE attacks and you are standing right next to the tank/scrapper/whatever everything is shooting at when you do get mezzed. It goes something like this: "let me hit build up and jump in, crap i'm held, bam bam bam aww I am dead, hey at least i got 2 shots off from defiance before I died, never mind I didn't kill anything..."
I am not advocating building pure ranged blasters by any means. Learn how to be mobile and lessen your exposure time in melee range. Mob AI is dumb and it takes a second for them to switch from ranged to melee mode, and you never have to be in melee for THAT long to get even those long animating attacks off if you learn how to move. My fire/elec dances all over the place jousting melee attacks, powersink and inferno, same with my sonic/mm with DP and PSW. I'm also not saying that you will avoid all mezzes with ranged def but based on my personal experience and playstyle Ranged def > S/L all the way.
Further Range defense I think is also hindered if your not actually out of melee range. Being mezzed in the middle of a group and being mezzed 20 feet away from a group while jousting in the end does not make much of a difference except for how long it will take before the mobs run to you to finish you off. I found the only safe way was of course Hover or Jet Pack to limit the number of mobs attacking me. That has been the only way solo I have been able to successfully survive on 4/8 settings. -
A few more modifications and fire instead.
I also added 10 enhancers to endurance so 2 of the IOs are at 55.
