I wasn't scolding- just giving the OP some advice that might help him get a better response. I am sure the OP will appreciate your input, but that is all I was trying to get him to do: Post a build for critique instead of asking for one.
Teach a man to fish... right? -
If I had a dollar for every time I saw a thread like this... heh.
You should post your own build instead of asking for a handout. It is much easier for mids fu masters to critique what you post rather that talking about something that may not even exist yet.
The patch to mids just came out a couple of days ago, and no one may have even completed a build. Let alone the fact that they may not be willing to just hand it out... -
I am just amused at the fact that you have a farming toon that has a concept. That is just... refreshing. Most people treat their farmers as indentured servants. Never giving those farmers decent names, back stories, costumes, or concepts.

Quote:Instead of slinging more poo- I will be mature and apologize for the cutting tone of my earlier message. I hope you accept that. Sorry for the attack. That is a great parody of a condescending player who did not read the post he is responding to. You really nailed it.
* The claiming contradiction by dropping "may" and "seem" and turning statements into absolutes. Made ever funnier by having done the exact thing you complained about - saying an AT (MM's) has problems but then saying they don't have issues.
* The specious idea that being more powerful means powerful enough.
* The inane recommendation that a poster asking for people's perspective should get more perspective.
* The use of ALL CAPS to emphasize words the poster thinks is important - but really you should have had MORE all caps for GREATER emphasis.
Thank you for brightening my day. Sometimes I think everyone on the boards is being serious.
Yes, I did say that MMs could use some Pet AI love. No, that does not mean I consider them to have issues. Sorry if it wasn't clear in my original post.
And yes- if you don't play all ATs then perhaps you should play them to gather your own perspective. I stand by that statement. Not from a disrespectful standpoint, but from the standpoint of seeing for yourself what (if any) balance problems exist in the game. -
I think of it like this... running a fire/fire tank is like having a v6 Mustang. Its quick enough, looks good and does it's job well enough. Sure, it isn't going to outpace that Corvette over there, but you certainly won't get put down by the mom driving her kids to soccer practice in the mini-van.
A fire/fire brute is more like having a Mustang Cobra ... You are considerably faster than your brother with two fewer cylinders, sound better, and are more lethal in general. Flashier, more likely to catch the attention of the police? Sure. But you can hang with the Corvette in most areas and maybe even show him out.
A fire/fire tank with a well planned build is fast in killing, true. A comparably endowed brute is supercharged and just plain nastier. The only reason I can think to go with the tank over the brute is the increased HP and damage resistance. Admittedly, it is reason enough if you are looking to have a sturdier toon.
In the end, it comes down to what priorities you have...
If damage is first and survivability comes later, choose the brute.
- and I will echo some comments about combustion: I don't miss it at all on my brute. It is slow and not that great in my eyes.
If survivability is critical and damage isn't as important, choose the tanker. -
Quote:Could you make an argument for tanker improvements that doesn't mention brutes?...
MM - apparently they need help as incarnates
Tankers - may need help at 50+ when IO sets cap brute's def
any other AT's need help at this point?
I play doms, controllers, corrs, and tankers and they all seem to be good.
For that matter, ANYONE can soft cap defense, so I guess that means EVERY AT needs a buff. Not sure what another AT having softcapped defense has to do with a tanker.
I am not a MM player, but I know they definitely are not hurting on any level of gameplay. And your statement makes zero sense: becoming an Incarnate is a means of making your character even more powerful than it was before. MMs could use some pet AI love in some case, but they don't really have issues.
Perhaps you should play more ATs so you can have a more rounded perspective.
PS- you contradicted yourself when you stated that tankers need help but then stated they are fine... which is it? -
Quote:I agree with this entirely. If you are playing this toon and feeling like efficiency is a problem- instead of Mu Mastery, pick up Energy Master. I just completed an ITF with my ss/sd/ energy mastery brute about 10 minutes ago. With Energy Mastery, you will get a nice boost when coupling with Agility Core Paragon. You will get additional defense, and all of the added recovery from stamina, Physical Perfection and Superior conditioning particularly become notable. Sure, you lose a bit of AoE by not having Mu or Pyre or some other choice, but I wouldn't trade the increased efficiency for anything. I initially went with the cardiac tree, but it almost feels like Agility was made for shield defense toons.I've slotted Cardiac Core, but Agility Core would be an excellent choice also. The +stealth in Superleap is a matter of preference but can easily be removed. The build is softcapped, has some nice recharge, and a couple of good AOE's. See what you think.
----
Afterall, with a good build, foot stomp is almost always available, and shield charge will be up often enough. And you can always apply judgement where needed. -
That isn't exactly correct. Teleporting in is probably the most reliable and foolproof way of detaching him. However, I have done this countless times by simply running straight in to the plaza. (I always did it by flying straight in and dropping down on the last mountain before the plaza, then dropping down and flashing in to position). But again, I stress that it is all about speed here. A toon without superspeed won't have a chance of doing it if he isn't teleporting. As long as you make it in to the cutscene, you have a chance to break him from his healing nictus.
-
I only started in on the 1st part. I noticed on your second Cybil spawn that you didn't take out the Surgeon first. You probably could have saved a bit of time throughout the whole TF if you make Surgeons your first kill and then killing the non buffers.
Congratulations tho! I want to do this on a few of my toons too. -
OP- I guess the point we are all illustrating is that there is no right answer. You have to think about your individual needs and observations. I think of the Alpha slot as a way to shore up something that has been lacking in the performance of that toon. For my ss/shield, I went with cardiac initially because he was thirsty and needed blue bar help. When development released more Alpha powers, I explored Agility and found that it was a good match because of the increased defense and because the end modification boosts worked well with the fact that I went body mastery (or whatever its called for brutes). Would it have worked so well if I went with the Fire Epic? No- because there aren't any powers there that would benefit from the endurance modification boosts that Agility grants. I probably would have ran back to Cardiac like a long lost love.
The other thing I love about Incarnate boosts are that you are never tied into things permanently. So as long as you have the threads/shards/components, you can craft until you are blue in the face and find something that works for you, and try different boosts out for different situations. -
Quote:I wouldn't have gone that route, personally. Seeing as agility would only boost the defense of powers that naturally grant defense, and electric armor has 0 powers that grant it, I would consider that a bit of a waste. Even if you picked up some leadership and and run combat jumping, it still wouldn't give much if you were going for the defense boost part of that.I went with Agility on my Claws/Electric, since my resists are already great but my defense was lacking.
Cardiac would have been my choice initially for electric armor. Get some end reduction in everything and then some damage resistance on top of it all. (Or am I misremembering the other effects of Cardiac?) That or spiritual to boost recharge overall and energize. -
Quote:Arcana- I have to call you on this. Your post contains about 35% too much deliciousness. I have to have some mint chocolate chip ice cream... NAO!If Scrappers are vanilla ice cream, then Brutes are a cookie dough blizzard. But I don't think that means Scrappers need something different sprinkled into them. Some people would rather just have ice cream. Particularly when its extremely good ice cream. Rolling the top in M&Ms doesn't make them equal to Brutes, it just makes them distasteful to people who hate M&Ms.
Personally, I like Mint Chip. Which is doubly bad for throwing extra junk into. I picked a mint primary and a chocolate chip secondary, and now I'm done. If I wanted Fury or Gauntlet, I would go to Cold Stone. -
I have a ma/sd scrapper that I play fairly regularly. She hits like a freight truck on steroids. The AoE damage is a little light, but that is easily taken care of by the occasional judgement power and you can always include a Patron/App power if you like. The character is versatile and is just solid. I did have a MA/Wp scrapper that I enjoyed, but this one really takes the cake when it comes to having a blast. Fully Saturated Against All Odds means everything in your arsenal is supercharged. If you can get around the thematic shield (some models are discreet) you will have a winner.

Quote:Well, good to know. I still would feel better about a build not using this mechanic, but that's a valid point.Barrier is a very acceptable way to softcap defenses. T4 barrier core lasts 2 minutes, which makes it perma. T4 Barrier Core gives 5% defense to all and 5% resistance to all for the full 2 minute duration. Alpha choice can affect those numbers, ie my fire/cold with agility alpha gets 6% defense from barrier instead of 5%.

I have seen a lot of km/ea brutes around. Particularly because this is a thematic and good looking pairing. Who knows, maybe it's just me.
I think you should roll one and enjoy it. If farming isn't your priority, don't worry about it. -
I was on Freedom and got the big red boot. I don't feel so bad about just taking on that BAF instead of that MoM that was forming now...

Is it worth the "trouble" of going for the (classic) s/l defense softcap? Absolutely. Elec is a sturdy secondary for brutes as it is, but when you add in a softcapped build, you get the best of multilayered defenses (high s/l res, high s/l defense, endurance mitigation tools, solid damage aura, psi res, energy res... and the list goes on).
Call me crazy, but I wouldn't consider a build softcapped if it has to rely on barrier to get there. In my eyes, Barrier is more of an OH ***** button in case you are getting pelted and need some relief. In order to call oneself truly softcapped, I would think you need to be softcapped all the time; not just when Barrier is up. Speaking of that, is it even possible to have Barrier "perma"? I have a brute with barrier, but it is T3 and it doesn't seem like even getting to T4 is worth it or likely to bring it to a perma status.
It isn't elec armor, but I have a fm/fa brute that rocks softcapped defense (without factoring in Barrier or any ATO enhancements) that sacrifices nothing as far as damage goes. So don't listen to anyone that tells you that reaching defense goals will cost damage or anything else. It can be done, and it is unquestionably worth the "trouble". I don't have an elec armor brute, but I am sure that if it can be done with fire, it can be done with electric too. -
I like powerset proliferation, but this scenario goes well outside of the definition of that. I consider proliferation as taking a powerset like Force Fields and porting it to an AT that doesn't have it like Corruptors. Anything else doesn't really fit the bill of proliferation, as it has been demonstrated up to this point.

Quote:A valid suggestion, but I would also advise you to look at Cardiac, OP. End reduction can be more notable and helpful if you feel weighted with the thirst of /DA. One has to remember that end recovery provided by Agility isn't always going to outweigh endurance reduction from Cardiac.I would say go Core Agility...It enhances your End Recovery massively to help you fight longer, adds to recharge to bring all your claws AoEs back faster, and your heal as well, and it adds to defense so you can stay alive longer...for Invuln/Dark/SR it is my go to Alpha...you can go spiritual as well, but Agility just has so much usefulness it's hard to overlook.
On the other hand though...if you are happy with all those things already and just want pure damage, you could take Musculature, however, I would recommend Agility personally...
I tried swapping to Agility on a troller recently after playing on Cardiac for a while, and I will say the move was far less than optimal. Unless something is constantly buffing your blue bar (SB, AM, RA, etc) you might fare better on cardiac. Not to mention that you might end up worse off- the increased recharge from Agility will help you spend that endurance that much quicker.
With all of that said, if you aren't have any pronounced endurance bar issues, you probably won't have to be too concerned with either one of these options for the effects they would have on your end management. -
This should definitely be possible. I have a partially kitted fortunata (I mostly play him as a NW) that is doing pretty well with defense and perma Mind Link is looming in the future. The only thing I don't care for is the lack of DDR, but I guess if you had capped DDR, you would technically be a tank mage of sorts.
-
I actually have a mainly thematic tw/da brute that I have been leveling. It is a thirsty but fun combo. Once I kit her fully with some IOs, I expect her to be a full blast.
-
Great responses so far. I will just chime in and say that I initially thought that I could run Agility instead of Cardiac on my grav/time, but unless there is someone else juicing my blue bar, I can run myself dry. Though the + Def and +Rech are so good that I routinely swap one for the other on that toon.
