According to this thread you downloaded the trial: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=249449

Where are you physically located at? (What country, state)

Where did you download the trial from? (what site?)
  3. way back, at some point during the alpha / beta testing, CoH was indeed archtypeless, and you could indeed take powers out of order.

However, that was changed well before the game hit retail launch in the US, and well before it hit retail launch in the EU markets.

    Why?

The free-for-all power concept was determined to be bad gameplay.

This was one of the sticky points with Cryptic Studio's second super-hero themed MMO that made it to the retail market. The Cryptic Studio developers were again trying a free-for-all power approach again was of serious concern to veterans of their first super-hero themed MMO. It was a bad idea back in 2002 and 2003, and it was still a bad idea in 2009 / 2010.
  4. Okay. Is this what you have going on?

That little bar next to the the start menu?

For reference, that is called the Quick Launch.

    that sounds about right.

    Cap frame rate?

I've already turned settings down pretty much as much as I can, which just makes it faster and still too hot, so that would be my next option.

    D'oh! /maxfps
    this... makes... absolutely... no... sense.

    Here's why:

    Quote:
All processors, be they central processing units (CPU's), graphics accelerators (GA's), graphics processing unit's (GPU's), network processing units (NPU), sound / audio processing units (SPU / APU), and even Physics Processing Units (PPU's), all have defined maximum clock-speeds. Outside of direct user-intervention, such as increasing the voltage to the processor, or increasing elements of the processor's timing mechanisms, this means there is a hard-cap to the amount of work that any individual processor can accomplish.

The hard limit to how much work a processor can accomplish means that there is a hard limit on how much heat that processor can put off, a limit that is referred to as the TPD envelope, or Thermal Design Power: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_design_power

This heat output is often measured in Watts.

    ...

The maximum TPD is a incredibly important figure for vendors actually building products with various processors. This CK8 cooler from Cooler-Master, for example, is only certified for dissipating up to 110watts. If you were to try and use it to cool off a processor with a 125watt rating, you'd probably wind up with a fried processor very, very quickly.

Presuming that the manufacturer of the processor was accurate about the thermal performance of their processor, outside of user or external intervention, there should not a case where a processor being used in a default setting should be cable of reaching a temperature where automatic shut-offs engage. Referencing the external intervention, build-ups of dust, dirt, or other such debris can impedes adequate and proper airflow to system processors, creating an overheating situation separate of any software variables.
Basically seebs, if you are running into problems where your computer is overheating just sitting still and doing nothing?

You got MAJOR PROBLEMS with that computer that need to be addressed.

    That's because there aren't any.

There's only one set for Combination Attacks in the game.

    That set is Dual Blades.

Dual Blades is balanced to be competitive with other melee sets. Being competitive does not necessarily mean matching total DPS, matching total debuff, or being exactly equal.

The melee sets already feature a wide range of powers and effects. Case(s) in point: Dark Melee is not going to put out the same pbaoe damage as Spines. Dark Melee doesn't have to put out the same pbaoe damage as Spines. Dark Melee has it's own feature set of powers.

Spines is not going to put out the same single-target as Broadsword. Spines doesn't have to put out the same single-target damage as Broadsword. Spines has it's own feature set of powers.

And so on... and so on... and so on.

Dual Blades feature is that it has combination attacks. These combination attacks unlock various mitigation effects for the Dual Blades set.

This gives the Dual Blades set a bit more versatility. Need a little bit more Debuff? Lead into a Weaken combination. Need to park a mob for a second or two? Lead into a Sweep combination.

Also: pulling off the combo's is fairly easy. A bright orange circle shows around powers that will trigger the next stage of a combination attack.

And you told the computer to pin to your taskbar the program that was running, right?

    Unpin that icon.

    Navigate to D:\Program Files (x86)\CoH

(or D:\Program Files\CoH if you are using Windows 7 32bit), and pin the cohupdater file.

But when I open the updaer again, it asks me to choose a install folder, and I choose the folder where I installed the game "D:\City Of Heroes" and it says "you may be out of disk space" or bla bla bla, but I already know I have plenty of disk space, so I suppose it won't overwrite.

But why does it do that?
How do I launch the game now? I really want to play, so please help!
    Thank you!
right off hand, if you installed your game to a different folder, that's going to be the problem.

The game should have set a separate icon on your desktop that points to the install location. You may have to adjust the shortcut to point to the correct drive.

yeah. Looking in the wrong place. I'll take that eye exam now

What I did wrong is I stopped on the pages that I linked to... rather than clicking through to the specific power http://tomax.cohtitan.com/data/power...des.AoE_Bridge

No, I don't know WHY I didn't just click on through...

    NT6 32bit: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-wi...l2-driver.html
    NT6 64bit: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-wi...l2-driver.html

    NT5 32bit: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2...l2-driver.html
    NT5 64bit: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64...l2-driver.html

Nvidia has a unified driver package. Your specific model of card does not matter.

That being said, your generic model of card does matter.

Nvidia has a couple of different legacy drivers now. Currently the cut-off on those legacy drivers is the Geforce FX series. So, not an issue for what you have.

well, if what Ivan said is true, that there haven't been any other serious attempts for a Ghostbusters 3, and there haven't been any other scripts... then those rumors don't really have a lot of weight...

That being said... since nobody really knows what the truth is about the previous attempts at a GB3 movie, Bill Murray may or have may not been the stopping point.

    okay.

    Click on start

    Click on run

    type in cmd

    hit ok

we should be at the DOS box

    type in: chkdsk /f /r

    hit enter

    hit y for yes

    exit the DOS box

    reboot

computer will come back up and run through a Check Disk. It will take a while on a 250gb drive.

When the check disk completes Windows should automatically restart

    Go to the control panel

    Go to Administrative Tools

    Click on Event Viewer

Click on the section labeled Application

Double click on the entry labeled winlogon

The results of the Check Disk will be here.

If you have any Bad Sectors, your hard-drive is starting to die.
  17. I don't see any particular problem with the hardware and software you posted.

Resolution reads at 1680*1050... you aren't pushing any heavy Ultra-Mode settings... Should be well within range of what a 9800 GT should be able to push no problem.

Did this just start on the last patch to the game? Or did it start on a non-patch period?
  18. Looking at the City of Data though... I don't see any explicit data on the combo's: Paragon Wiki, while it defines the combo's, do not list damages either: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Dual_Blades

So it's possible that you'll have to use the in-game figures. The effects of the combo's are listed in the real-numbers for the attack that completes the combo. Typhoon's Edge completes both the Weaken and the Sweep combo, so it has the effects for both:

keep in mind that the forums only represent a small subsection of the actual player-base, and that a large quantities of in-game players have large reservations about anything that's posted in the forums due to an overall lack of accuracy and what could be described as a skewed viewpoint.

For most common power questions, you are more likely to get valid input from players who actually took and use, or tried, a power by asking in a server global channel, your Supergroup members, or your coalition members.

TT is a really subpar AoE power for a melee toon. You don't want to have to go out of melee to fire an AoE on a scrapper.
A good way to think of Shadow Meld is that it is a weaker and defense only version of Moment of Glory, but it will still pretty much soft-cap you if you slot it with any defense boosts.

Anyways, I took Soul Tentacles on a Brute for the same AOE reason... and well... That narrow cone basically means as an AOE, it's useless unless I back out of a mob. I'd have a hard time telling another melee archtype to grab the immobilize cone after my play experience with one.
