    Actually, ATi does.

    For NT6 systems ATi offers a current OpenGL 3.x+ / Dx10+ driver:

For NT5 systems, ATi offers a reference OpenGL 2.x / Dx9 driver based on the 9-3 legacy driver release:

So it's not letting you install the 197 driver series?

Thing is, your notebook is using the 186.47 release, which was not an Nvidia release. Nvidia's mobile 186 drivers were the 186.03 on June 9, 2009, and the 186.81 on August 27, 2009.

  3. I suspect that there aren't many guides for corruptor archery to begin with. The Archery Set is a little (LOT) lite (NONEXISTANT) on powers with Damage-Over-Time components; lacks secondary debuff effects; and is pretty much all smashing / lethal damage... which is the most resisted damage type on NPC critters. So, as a corruptor set, it really doesn't mesh with the corruptor's inherent on paper.

That being said, I did an archery / fire blaster, and everybody told me that was a dumb idea... and actually, they were right.

Now, since I don't know what your play style is, giving you advice on how to build is going to be a little difficult. Since Archery doesn't mesh well with what Corruptors do to begin with, at high levels of play you'll pretty much be reliant on Tar Patch to drop enemies resistances so you can lay damage down. The good news there is that the corruptors recharge on Tar Patch is 1:30 with an effect of 45.5 seconds... so you can pretty much perma Tar Patch on just SO's.

  6. already a thread on this, but I'm too lazy to track it down.

While I'll admit I'm not exactly an expert on "Captain America" I do know that many of his first comic appearances placed him fighting overseas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_America :: http://marvel.com/universe/Captain_A...teve_Rogers%29

So really, for a movie to be made about Captain America that stays true to his comic roots, I would actually have thought that overseas locations would have been scouted long before any US sites were scouted.

    ***

That aside: I will point to another recent movie, Zombieland. Zombieland was filmed in the state of Georgia, and according to the producers, the actual production costs were pretty close to the production costs if they had filmed in an non-US location.

So, if cost is a factor, and LA / Hollywood is just too expensive, there still are places to film in the US that offer expansive mountain ranges, scenic ocean fronts, and metropolitan areas... that aren't LA, Chicago, or New York.

    um. I've successfully run a RadeonHD 5770 off a 400watt power supply.

    So no. They don't.

    Nvidia Cards need more power.

Anyone know where I can find an inexpensive card capable of running AoC and also running CoH in Ultra Mode?
    Define inexpensive?

A 512 RadeonHD 4850 can be had for around $105-$110 in the US, and in 1680*1050, it's quite capable of running Ultra Mode. A 1gb RadeonHD 4850 starts around $125-ish, and is probably worth the extra cash: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+4850

You can get Geforce GTS 250's, the die-shrunk overclocked update to the 9800 for around the same price... http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=Geforce+GTS+250

I wouldn't... buy one though... Most of the Geforce GTS 250's in that price range are from the likes of Sparkle, Galaxy, Palit, ECS, or Zotac... and build quality isn't really what those companies are known for. The one you'd actually want, with the full-ducted fan... would be EVGA's Geforce GTS 250. To give you an idea of just how good this card is compared to it's rivals, it's still commanding a $130+ price-tag: http://www.buy.com/prod/evga-geforce...212075738.html

    It's 1gb Older Brother is still topping $150... for a GTS 250???

    ***

The big problem is that in this $130 / $150 market where the "good" RadeonHD 4850's and Geforce GTS 250's are found is also the stomping ground of the RadeonHD 5750 and the cheap 5770: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+5750 http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+5770

Which... offer more performance... and DX11 / OpenGL 4.0 support.

And don't think OpenGL 4.0 support won't matter. Television has made some comments about things he and his crew are doing in OpenGL, and there's a chance than a City of Heroes client building against native OpenGL 4.0 calls is located somewhere on his hard-drive.

So, if it was my money on the line:

    $100: VisionTek RadeonHD 4850 512mb

    $130: XFX RadeonHD 5750 1gb

    $165: Sapphire RadeonHD 5770 1gb
    $167: Asus RadeonHD 5770 1gb

    ***

If you don't want to buy ATi, and you really want to stick with Nvidia, that Evga Geforce GTS 250 at $134 or it's 1gb brother are really your best "brand" buys.
  9. I think... I think a lot of the posters in this thread have a perception problem... and I think you highlight it Tokyo.

Many CoV players treat CoV as a stand-alone game, as parallel entity that should be equal to CoH in every aspect, ranging from amount of content, the access of that content, and the execution of that content. My opinion is that this perception was driven by the early years of CoV, which was introduced and sold as a completely standalone game, even though it wasn't. It shared the same subscription with CoH, and due to the nature of the engine, all of the physically stored game content.

The Paragon Studio Developers have admitted that CoV was a mistake, and have termed the release an "Expandalone". From what we've seen the developers have gone out of their way to emphasize that Going Rogue is an Expansion.

Which brings up a question. What would have been the result if Jack Emmert and the other Cryptic Executives had promoted, and then sold CoV as an expansion. What would have happened if they had just said straight up:
    • You need City of Heroes to play it
    • If you want to, you can play as a Villain.
    • It's not the main game. It's an extra experience.
What if their marketing... had matched what was the reality? I suspect that a lot of this "Devs hate Villains" talk wouldn't be around. However, the marketing, the perception, the "what players were told" never has matched what City of Villains is. It's an expansion to CoH. It's an extra experience, and is not the main game or the main focus.

I think that might among the reasons why NCSoft's marketing staff is reticent now. Collectively, Cryptic blew it on CoV. Yes, Cryptic still delivered the Moon when they had promised Mars, and that's still quite an achievement. I don't think NCSoft wants to create expectations of the game that will continue to haunt the developers down the line.

Another good case in point is Architect Entertainment. Because it is possible to go from 1 to 50 in the AE system, it is technically an "alternate leveling path" and was noted as such. A substantial amount of the player base got it into their heads that "alternate leveling path" meant "equal to and/or superior to" and promptly started figuring out the best ways to maximize EXP gain with the least amount of work put into the game... then flooding the forums with whiny posts when the devs stepped in to force AE back into it's intended function.

All it took was one little line from marketing that wasn't explicitly clear about what AE was for, and... things went wrong.

Okay, I realize that there is a fair point that a large amount of this behavior falls on that portion of the player base itself being intentionally obtuse or ignorant, sort of like the reaction you'd get from an environmentalist being told that Al Gore knows as much about the environment as Jeremy Clarkson knows about fashion (for reference, if you didn't get this, Jeremy Clarkson is routinely voted by GQ to be one of the worst dressed men in Britain.) There's a bit of willful suspension of reality in acceptance of what one wants to see.

The point is that CoV never has been an equal to CoH... and likely... never will be. Assuming that the Going Rogue staff is tasked to work on a "new" game engine for a new client, the oft-rumored CoH2, we'll likely see a more even split between villainous and heroic content as such a "new" game would likely be built from the ground up with the Going Rogue factions in mind, rather than adding those factions in an expansion.

Is it right to assume that Archetypes to a degree follow the traditional MMO typeset of tank, dps, healer etc, or is that not the case in CoX?
To directly answer the question, yes and no. Yes, some archtypes do match to the traditional MMO Typsets.
    • Tanks Take Damage
    • Defenders Heal
    • Blaster's do DPS
However, call a defender a healer, and they'll stare blankly at you. Only one of the Defender sets actually heals, and that's the Empathy set... but Empathy is more than just heals as it offers buffs to defense, recharge rate, regeneration, recovery, and mez effect protection .

By the same token, not all tanks are equally equipped to take damage. Stone Armor tanks with the Granite power can soak up damage that would make a Dark, Fire, or Electric Armor tank piddle on the floor.

Not all Blasters are equal either. Sonic Blaster's get a resistance debuff. Radiation Blasters debuff Defense. Electic Blasters sap Endurance. Energy Blasters do knockback. Dual Pistol Blasters can change ammo types for different combat situations. Archery blasters can knock out mobs out of direct line of sight.

Some class-sets turn the entire concept of a traditional archtype on it's head. Masterminds and Controllers both get pets, and both get buffs. However, Masterminds can control their pets individually, creating an RTS sub-game inside the MMO. Controllers can't directly control their pets, but they can mez-effect the living daylights out of mobs. Dominators get the mez-effects of controllers, but rather than debuffing their opponents, they pretty much wade right into short-ranged / melee combat and lay waste like a Blaster.

With the addition of Invention Origin Enhancements a few years back now, one of the common sub-games within the MMO is to force archtypes to do what they weren't supposed to do. E.G. players who "soft-cap" defenders for reference: soft-cap means increasing the defense of the player to the point where most enemies can not hit the player as their accuracy / to-hit check is too low so that the defenders can play in melee range like a tank.

Based off of the Q1 numbers, at worst, City of Heroes has around 40,000 active subscribers. At Best, the number is around 120,000 active subscribers. The actual number is probably somewhere in between, so split the difference and there's probably 80,000 or so unique players subscribing. So yes, the game is still very active.

Marketing also has appointed a scapegoa... I mean, valuable person by the name of Black Pebble: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/member.php?u=486687 According to Black Pebble a marketing push is planned for the upcoming Going Rogue release, and stable subscription numbers are expected to rise back up to 150k+.

    ***

Now, some of the things you do need to know about the game:

First: City of Heroes is heavily instanced. Almost all game content appears in privately hosted maps, so there's not a large amount of open travel going on. Ergo, if you are using the /search function in game, it might seem a bit sparse. E.G. you could be in steel canyon and there'd be 3 8-man teams running the Positron Task Force... but you'd never know it.

Second: City of Heroes has a robust /hide command, allowing players to selectively decide how they appear to the game. Many veteran players just leave themselves hidden to search.

    ***

    Now, a good solo build?

Well, if you are brand new to MMO's, I'd like to point you in the direction of the Tank set on the hero side: specifically Dark Melee attack with Invulnerability armor.

Why? Invuln has some of the highest natural resists in the game, and many of the powers are passive, meaning they don't take up endurance.

Dark Melee for two reasons. First, it has a self heal attack, so you have a reliable way to get some health back. Second, it has a self-endurance recovery attack, so you can reclaim endurance, which is used to fuel your attacks. Third, it has a self-damage boost, which... well. Allows you to run into a mob, then sort of pummel them to death without even really trying.

Now, if you're feeling a little more adventurous, try out the Willpower Set. It also has good resists and good regeneration, but it's not quite so good at taking Alpha Strikes.

Or go with the Scrapper versions of Dark Melee / Invuln.

Players don't even need to pay that to join. Amazon.com sells the Good Versus Evil Edition for as low as $2: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new

The Architect Edition sells for only $15 through Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=new

So, for somebody looking to get into City of Heroes, the entry cost is a fair bit lower than $20.

The biggest financial input, other than the subscriptions, that would have shown in the Q1 financial statements would have been the Super Booster Pack... but that was released in Novemember last year and thus would have had the greatest impact in the Q4 2009 results as the majority of booster pack buys are made when the booster pack is brand new: http://www.cityofheroes.com/news/new...per_boost.html

So, it's fairly safe to say that Paragon Studios financial contributions to NCSoft for the Q1 report would have largely been just game subscriptions. From the numbers estimated, it's likely that 90% or more would have been from subscriptions.

That would place the player base at around 90k to 100k is the likely subscribed player base for Q1 figures... which roughly fits how we think the game as been doing.

What you're looking for with the leak is the game using up consistently more memory all the time. I often see little changes when I move my head around or someone runs by, but if you're just sitting there with memory use climbing...that's a bad sign.

I'd check memory use by CoH by looking in task manager. If you're on Windows that is. If you're using Linux, you're probably cool enough to to know how to do this better than I could tell you.
    *cough* kinfocenter *cough*

Actually, KDE4 includes System Load Viewer as part of the default installation. Just need to run CoH in a windowed mode rather than full screen to keep an eye on it.

Most KDE4 distro's just need to right click on the task bar, Add Widget, then select System Load Viewer.

Also, the CoH in-game command /graphfps 7 seems to do a similar real-time monitoring through the game's GUI.
