How do you know if your vid card is going bad?

Hi gang,

Been having some problems the last couple days with CoH and AoC. My fps has dropped to a crawl and CoH kept crashing and rebooting my computer when I would enter missions or alt+tab out of the game to look at a web page. Even my AoC game has gone from 70-80 fps down to 4-5. I checked my modem and called my ISP and everything seems to be fine on that end. My vid card is a Nvidia 9800GT. It's not that old. I had Cyberpower put it in when they buit my rig a year or so ago. Hoping someone has some ideas. Thanks.

The best way to tell if your video card is bad is to try a different one.

If the problem goes away, then you know the card is bad. If the problem remains, there's another issue at hand.

Typically it either works or it doesn't

However some cards and drivers can be a problem depending on software, games, age ...

Ive noticed with Ultra mode my cooling system kicks in and cranks up alot more than previosly i'm using a liquid cooling system and normally its fairly quiet ..

That being said and from what ive noticed in the past with upper end video cards.. I'm thinking you may be having an overheat issue with the video card. The cpu isnt getting hot enough to shut u down and give you the beep codes/warnings ..
However if your video card heats up enough it can cause the problems your experiencing.

Hmm this is backyard mickey mouse stuff but it might work for you to test this theory, ive done it myself..

Take side cover off pc and get urself a fan you would use in summer months and aim it inside pc .. and see if you still have the problem. thats how i found out my card was overheating a few years ago and then decided on more fans or new case n cooling method's....

Food for thought, good luck

Well, here's the latest development. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, and when I try to run CoH or AoC, the computer freezes, a blue screen pops up, and the system reboots. Once everything is up and running, my display is very low resolution. Sounds like a vid card issue to me. Naturally, I'm 3 months out of a 1 year warranty. :-(
Anyone know where I can find an inexpensive card capable of running AoC and also running CoH in Ultra Mode?

ATI Radeon 5850. It's usually around 300 and works very well for a mid-range card.

Define inexpensive?

A 512 RadeonHD 4850 can be had for around $105-$110 in the US, and in 1680*1050, it's quite capable of running Ultra Mode. A 1gb RadeonHD 4850 starts around $125-ish, and is probably worth the extra cash: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+4850

You can get Geforce GTS 250's, the die-shrunk overclocked update to the 9800 for around the same price... http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=Geforce+GTS+250

I wouldn't... buy one though... Most of the Geforce GTS 250's in that price range are from the likes of Sparkle, Galaxy, Palit, ECS, or Zotac... and build quality isn't really what those companies are known for. The one you'd actually want, with the full-ducted fan... would be EVGA's Geforce GTS 250. To give you an idea of just how good this card is compared to it's rivals, it's still commanding a $130+ price-tag: http://www.buy.com/prod/evga-geforce...212075738.html

It's 1gb Older Brother is still topping $150... for a GTS 250???

***

The big problem is that in this $130 / $150 market where the "good" RadeonHD 4850's and Geforce GTS 250's are found is also the stomping ground of the RadeonHD 5750 and the cheap 5770: http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+5750 http://www.pricewatch.com/search?q=RadeonHD+5770

Which... offer more performance... and DX11 / OpenGL 4.0 support.

And don't think OpenGL 4.0 support won't matter. Television has made some comments about things he and his crew are doing in OpenGL, and there's a chance than a City of Heroes client building against native OpenGL 4.0 calls is located somewhere on his hard-drive.

So, if it was my money on the line:

$100: VisionTek RadeonHD 4850 512mb

$130: XFX RadeonHD 5750 1gb

$165: Sapphire RadeonHD 5770 1gb
$167: Asus RadeonHD 5770 1gb

***

If you don't want to buy ATi, and you really want to stick with Nvidia, that Evga Geforce GTS 250 at $134 or it's 1gb brother are really your best "brand" buys.

/facepalm
$300 is not a mid range card, it's near the high end.

HD 5770/HD 4870 are mid range cards.

Thanks for all the great info guys. Gonna try to troubleshoot a couple more things before I-order a new one, but I will definitely take your advice.

Decided to try uninstalling all drivers and pulling out then re-inserting my vid card. WAiting for updated drivers to download now. What do you all think are the odds of that actually working? :-P

Anything is possible. Are you using a driver cleaner program when you uninstall your drivers? While I've been lucky enough not to need one, many very tech-savvy people here advocate that you use one to completely clean out all of the remnants of the previous driver installation before installing new drivers.

Good luck!

Re: How do you know if your vid card is going bad?
You hear evil cackling coming out of the fan grills?

If the system is bombing and rebooting, that COULD be a few things.

  1. Bad vidcard
  2. ***** driver install
  3. Bad memory or memory controller.
  4. Thermal issue with the card or CPU
  5. If you're using PCI-E power connectors, it's possible that your PSU is taking a dump on you. So when the vidcard starts drawing power on those rails it's destabilizing the system because the power feeds are fluctuating.
#5 If you have a spare PSU to test with you could try. Takes a bit of know-how or a PSU tester.

#4 is possibly easy to fix. When was the last time you cleaned our your system's case and the card itself? Also, make sure the card is seated properly/fully in the slot.

#3 is a sucky thing, but still able to be worked around. How many DIMM slots are populated on your board right now? If you have 4 individual DIMMs, you can try pulling the second pair and see if you still have the problem.

#2 is a pain in the butt. Try a driver cleaner. As a VERY LAST RESORT, you could reinstall the system clean (OS and all).

#1 If the card IS going belly-up, you're looking at needing a new card. Sucktastic? Sure. The end of the world? Nuh-uh!

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Another thing I wanted to mention: If your system is auto restarting after a BSOD, it is not giving you time to collect the BSOD information. You can disable auto restart after BSOD ... but I don't have Vista on this machine. In XP, you right click the My Computer icon, select properties, select the advanced tab and click on the Settings button in the "Startup and Recovery" section at the bottom. If you can find this in Vista, look for the "System Failure" section and uncheck the box next to "Automatically Restart".

I hope this helps somewhat.

I personally love my GTX 260 card.

Remember, make sure you have a big enough Power Supply before you go sticking in a new card.

The 9800 card takes about 500.

All the new cards mentioned above need more power.

um. I've successfully run a RadeonHD 5770 off a 400watt power supply.

So no. They don't.

Nvidia Cards need more power.

Your symptoms don't sound typical of a failing video card. Failing cards usually display graphics errors: missing or misplaced triangles, static on the surfaces of objects, black or colored lines across the screen, whole-screen tints, or the screen simply staying black.

Yeah Katie I've started getting that as well. Lots of multicolored static that takes over the screen. The screen will flicker then go dark at times or freeze up altogether before giving me a blue screen and crashing. Currently shopping around for one of the video cards the gang in this thread have recommended. Hopefully that fixes things.

Went and picked up a new vid card today. Decided to cheap out for now and actually downgraded a notch to the Nvidia Geforce 9500GT 1GB. Plugged it in and have been having no further issues. I was able to keep the same settings on AoC, but I did have to lower my CoH settings a bit to allow it to run smoothly. :-( Oh well. No big deal. When business picks back up, I'll spring for a new super duper card. For now, $55 for the 9500 GT to hold me over isn't too bad.... Thanks for all the great info.
