That's one of my biggest complaints. The OP was worded poorly and caused quite a bit of confusion.

Nice to hear. Communication is great, and lack of it is a big reason this event was so frustrating.

But honestly, the only way to make it up to us is to release the Animal pack today, instead.

    What? Too obvious?

Okay. On a more serious note, for feedback purposes, let me give you my personal impression of the evening. My boyfriend and I mostly play on 4 main servers -- Triumph (my main), Freedom, Victory, and Virtue (my b-friend's main), and we attended events on three of those. For the most part, the evening felt like a lot of "hurry up and wait." The way the event worked, the party was over within minutes of the devs showing up. Given how so many of us built costumes specifically for this event, it felt like getting all dressed up for a party which ended the moment the host arrived and served drinks.

Freedom: We attended the Freedom event first, and it was mega-crowded, but the atmosphere was exciting enough. I apparently was in PD3. Saw the general message about the giveaway right on schedule, everything server-wide looked good. Didn't get a code, but it was interesting watching the catgirls and cows interact. I did note that the Dev confirmed PD4 would only get one code (she said she was saving one for them). But overall, I didn't have any problems.

Triumph: After Freedom, I went over to Triumph almost 30 minutes early to get a spot in PD1. It got crowded quicker than I expected, and instead of the witty banter I noticed in Freedom, here there was almost an adversarial tone to broadcast, as a few Freedom-ites "graced us" with their presense and insisted on telling us all how horrible Triumph is compared to Freedom. As the time for the event to start came and went, the crowd got more restless, and the anti-Triumph insults came faster, along with several rumors that Triumph had been skipped due to so many codes being given away on Freedom. The official message finally came, and Av (or Bea) quickly came and went, and before you knew it, I realized I'd been standing in the D for almost an hour, just huddled around DJ Zero, doing nothing but waiting and getting frustrated at other players. Going to the second party was where it stopped being fun, and once I realized that I logged from the game completely, planning to skip them the rest of the night.

Virtue: As luck (?) would have it, I found myself free almost exactly when the Virtue event was starting. I logged on and grabbed a toon that already had a safari costume (at the time, I thought that mattered) and headed to the D. There was a huge crowd outside the Kings Row door to the D. I ended up in the the 5th or so instance, and was told when I arrived that all the codes had been given away upstream. I personally wasn't as frustrated this time as I hadn't been waiting for hours, but I heard several other folks who had dedicated the entire evening to this event. Glad I didn't do that.

Overall, each event I attended seemed to come with greater and greater levels of frustration from the crowd. The general announcements came later and later, and rumors took over in lieu of any official dev communication. The event almost entirely depended on player-driven communications to figure out where the Devs were and how the event would be run. More communication, including a more clearly worded original post, as well as more clear in-game communication, would have made a big difference. It would also help to get the players events committees involved so there's more to do, to make the parties more exciting than "wait around for Av or Bea, then leave."

Given what I know now, I don't think I'll come to another event like this. I found the waiting for almost no chance at a code much more frustrating than fun. Hopefully, however, there won't be another event like this; hopefully, they will learn from this so the Steampunk booster giveaway goes much more smoothly.

But back to my first point -- a great way to say "we're sorry," would be to release the Animal pack two days early. Right?

My boyfriend experienced a very similar scenario last night, approximately 7:30pm (central time). He closed the program and logged in from my laptop, where it worked fine. Worked fine on his computer next time he tried, as well.

I see no nerd rage here. Wolvie's history with Japan (and its women) is long established. This movie already sounds like a better Wolverine film than the first one.

Since the "X-Men: Origins: Wolverine" DVD special features mention that Silver Samurai would be in this movie, I'm guessing the love interest to be the SS's sister, Mariko.

  4. Happened to me yesterday on two different toons. Pretty annoying bug during the 2XP weekend.

  5. I just didn't get it.

The opening song was a big turn-off, but not a dealbreaker. Generic pop punk boy band singing a pretty crappy song, and doing it unenthusiastically at that. But still, it wasn't near as bad as, say, the theme to Star Trek: Enterprise (aka - "the worst theme song ever").

But there was a weird disconnect in the cartoon itself that was the bigger problem for me. Not sure how to describe it. It's as if the writers and the animators aren't on the same page with regards to the age of their target audience, or as if they started out with several radically different art styles before settling on a mostly weak hybrid of them all. It's the kind of disconnect that would lead them to put DC's Brainiac in their opening credits without anyone saying, "Hey, doesn't that look like Brainiac? Should we do that?"

Wasp's a great example of this disconnect. Yes, Wasp bothers me too. Not really because she looks like a Japanese schoolgirl (cuz I luvs me some anime when it's good). It's because she doesn't look like she was designed to be a part of this team, but instead is a refugee from some previous design brief long since forgotten elsewhere.

    But...

If you're already a fan of the Avengers property, take what I said with a grain of salt. I'm betting that If I were already a fan of the Avengers property (i.e., if I already had an emotional connection with them and/or their original stories), it might would have come across somewhat differently, that I'd have been more forgiving. But personally, without any nostalgia factor, I thought the show was way too much of a mess to keep watching.

  7. Super!!!!!

I've had some ideas for a few of those weapons that I never bothered with 'cause they unlock so late in the game. And I don't really remember seeing that costume emote before -- I like it, and think I'll get some use out of it. This is great news, indeed.

According to the newly released producer's letter, it should drop in the next few weeks. Some other interesting news there, as well. My fave -- double XP weekend this month!

  9. My 10 faves:
Snakes -- the main reason I stuck with CoV despite the hideously horrendous starting zone. I'd really like to see more toons developed using the snake body (Medusa, anyone?)

Syndicate -- one of the few human gangs that really piques my interest. I love how their slick, modern Japanese aesthetic contrasts against the older Tsoo (whom I also like, just not as much). And I'd love to see the something like the Syndicate in Paragon proper.

Seers -- awesome look and awesome concept, straight out of "Minority Report."

Freakshow -- as much as I think they're overused, they've still got such a unique look that make them perhaps my favorite techie group.

Devouring Earth -- great looking, unique villains that are truly freaky. Loves me some mushroom heads!

Fir Bolg -- flaming pumpkin heads? Loves me them, too. Awesome!

Arachnos -- as much as I completely hate how Arachnos dominates the CoV storyline, I still find them a fun group to fight. Mu Mystics are a real fave, but Fortunata, Crab Spiders, Spider Robots -- a diverse group that still makes sense together.

Rikti -- mental aliens, and I never tire of the invasions. And monkeys! Love the monkeys!

Carnival -- Simply georgeous, very dangerous, and they still feel like comic book villains. LOVE the Illusionists and their hoop skirts. Perhaps the best villains in game.

Rularuu -- Wow! Some of the most "alien" encounters in the game. They make me feel like I'm not being "forced" to team, but that the threat is so big that I "need" a team for our world to survive. More, please.
    My Least Favorite:
Gangs -- Skulls, Hellions, Outcast, Warriors, Mooks, Family

    Military/Paramilitary -- Council, 5th Column, Longbow, Crey

While each of these groups has a boss or two that I find pretty interesting, it's hard for me to think of them as much more than generic street gangs with powers, or gun-wielding guys who matching military suits. They don't really feel "super," and do almost nothing for me. (The Nemesis would have been among these least faves if not for their awesome outfits and the War Hulks... LOVE the War Hulks.)

Oh, and a special "least favorite" mention for the Council Vampires (and to a lesser extent Werewolves). I get the concept that they're not "real" vampires, but they still feel completely wrong as part of the Council, and they're especially out of place in the Halloween event. I mean, those outfits? Ugh! Can't we get some REAL vampires for Halloween instead of these super soldier pseudo-vamps?

That kinda makes sense. It also makes sense why I'd never noticed this as I never published my one finished arc, and I play arcs not based on star ratings but based on search words and critter descriptions.

I understand why the devs added the warnings about ambushes, AVs/EBs, and whatnot, but those terms can/do scare me off if I see too many of them, especially since I play arcs that are already difficult because I like custom critters. But if these terms are being as broadly applied as some here claim, then perhaps I should be a little more daring in trying those missions. It hadn't occured to me that something as simple as a helper might be what's triggering those warnings.

This isn't directed at Ashcraft or Geko specifically, but they articulated something I'd seen from several posts here and elsewhere -- that a 4 star rating in AE is at best meaningless, and at worst a failure. As a teacher, that reminds me of the grade inflation that makes my students fly into a panic if they make anything less than an "A," even after I explain that a "B" is still is a fine achievement, and that in turn is better than the perfectly average but acceptable "C."

So my questions: Why do 4-star arcs have the stigma of existing in a "4-star wasteland," or that they "might as well be dead?" Can almost any arc really achieve 4 stars, making the rating meaningless? Or is the feeling that 4-star arcs are failures more because the "goal" is to get to 5 stars due to how it was initial advertised that 5-star arcs would receive praise and accolades and potential in-game recognition? Or am I just misreading things completely?

Not really aware of AE at all?

And a second question, what's something that *would* bring you into the AE building to try out an arc?
The biggest thing that attracts me to an arc is for it to have well designed custom characters, alongside a story that works with what I'm interested in at the time. I really don't care for arcs featuring villains that I'm already fighting in-game unless they're used in a unique way.

I usually search for specific types of missions rather than pay much attention to star ratings, and so I don't feel the system is nearly as broken as other people do. I search for specific terms, such as fairies, elfs, vampires, demons, angels, etc. I like to play arcs that have a City of Warcraft feel to them. I love this game, but don't find enough magic missions for my taste, so I use AE to fill that gap. If I see an arc with standard villain groups, especially tech or paramilitary groups, I skip it completely.

In addition, I look for the shorter arcs. I mostly solo, so if an arc is labeled as long or if the maps are large, then it really has to draw me in with its description of critters/plot. If I find an arc is too hard because of poorly designed custom powers or whatnot, I drop it before the first mission is over and look for another. But I don't worry about that so much because it's usually obvious early on if the powers are poorly balanced.

If an arc is labeled as having an arch-villain/elite boss, I'm a bit more skeptical because of my solo status, but again, that's really not a deal-breaker if it otherwise sounds interesting. If an arc has drawn my attention through a search, that first mission will be the key to whether or not I attempt to finish it.

I tried to design my own arcs, but I got tired of them being made invalid before I'd published thanks to patches/updates. For a while I decided that I'd wait until the system became more stable before I came back and tried again, but I'm not sure that's happened (or honestly, if it will happen). It seems that every patch makes something or another in my arcs invalid, so I've not played around with creating them in some time.

  13. I love this costume and want it for both my accounts. Sadly, that's realistically not gonna happen unless you offer them for sale at the NCSoft store (or come teach my classes so I can sit idly by my computer for the next twelve days for the slim chance of getting one, let alone two).

Congrats, because it's been a while since the CoH team has actually made me angry at them and this game.

  15. Yes.

I've taken both SJ and SS on a scrapper with Power Slide, and I love the way the SS and power slide effects look like a comet when leaping through the air. I end up leaving them on most of the time. Man, I'll admit he's an endurance hog, but as Billy Crystal's Fernando Lamas said, "It is better to look good than to feel good."

It's not exactly what you're talking about, but my Kin/energy defender, who is conceptually a being of pure energy, has all the travel powers if you count his Kinetic powerset. His power pools are Flight, TP, Speed, and Concealment. He took both Flight and TP from their respective pools, and even though he gets super leaping and super speed from his primary, I went ahead and took the Speed powerset anyway, specifically for Hasten and Flurry. The only non-travel pool he's dipped into is Concealment, strictly for Stealth so he appears transparent (and which I may respec out of if he ever gets a Stealth IO). It's not practical, it's totally conceptual, it's completely wasteful... and I love him anyway.

My Peacebringer would have both flight and TP if ever he were allowed to take TP for his human form. He'll be losing the Fitness pool soon if I respec him, but there's really nothing I want to replace it with except TP. I wish TP and Flight were open to Kheldians, not only for the travel powers, but also for the powers in those sets that we can't duplicate (such as TP Friend/Foe or Air Superiority).

I'm pretty sure I've got a Claws/regen scrapper with both SJ and TP, and I've got several mages with both flight and TP. But with a gazillion alts, it's hard to keep track.

    COH cyber monday

Here's the text from the main page:
    Quote:
On November 29th, Cyber Monday, Best Buy® Game Zone members can buy City of Heroes Going Rogue Complete Collection for $9.99 for one day only through BestBuy.com. Then go to the NCsoft store, where, everyone can buy some of the hottest City of Heroes(R) Booster Packs for up to 50% off. Cyber Monday is the best time to get your friends to try out City of Heroes, and get some cool Booster Packs at the same time!
    Emphasis mine.

Looks like it won't necessarily be all the packs, nor all at 50% off.

We've not got the Wedding pack on one account, nor the Mac/Valkyrie pack on the other. And neither account has the Party pack. If these are among the sale items, and if they're cheap enough (read: if the Party pack is among the 50%-off items), then I'll snag 'em up.

Just curious -- I may be misremembering, but isn't there some weird security thing on the store where you can only buy so many items on any given day/month? If so, will that pose a problem?

  17. Oh boy, how'd I miss this thread? Since I came after the addition of ED , inventions, and the market, I can't speak to how the game worked then. But here's what I would do...

    1. One City, part one -- open world PvP (with restrictions). From the start, there would be one city for both heroes and villains. This would mean we designed for open-world PVP from the start, but I'd have two serious restrictions: characters would have an "on/off" flag for PVP, and there would be "zones" around the regular gathering places which temporarily sets all PVP flags to "off" to prevent annoyances while at auction or training or whatnot. With heroes and villains in the same city from the start, I'd allow side-switching from the start as well.

    2. One City, part two -- "City," not "Cities." I'd not have spent development time on 3 different cities (Paragon City/Rogue Isles/Praetoria). Instead of "old, blocky graphics city," "dirty-yet-better-graphics villain city" and "bright-and-shiny great graphics city," we'd have one city that continually gets updated graphically to represent changes in city structures/infrastructure. When new zones are added, they would be either new development/subdivisions to the city, or else things that exist outside the city (mountains, deserts, moon base, Atlantis, etc).

    3. One City, part three -- No war walls. The seemless look of GR makes me hate the war walls even more now then when I first saw them. As the city stands now, it doesn't feel like one city so much as a dozen or so small cities broken up into little boxes.

    4. More stores and contacts inside buildings. I'd have vendors and contacts not stand out on the streets so often (as they do especially in both CoV and GR). Instead, most would have their own store or building you enter and exit. The CoV magic trainer in an airport warehouse really annoys me given there's a perfectly good magic shop going unused not far away. And the vendor robots on the street in Praetoria are tantamount to getting my enhancement from a vending machine, and that's beyond cheezy. Superheroes wouldn't enhance their powers from vending machines, would they?

    5. More dynamic contacts and better AI on citizens. Contacts should be more exciting than statues, and do more than adjust themselves and cough. And citizens should act somewhat aware of their surroundings. When a battle starts, citizens should flee the area. Or at least step away from the mugger and ensuing battle.

    6. Greater player customization. I'd have planned in advance for greater character customization, including more sliders & nodes for our character models, and power customization from the get-go. Customizable minions for Masterminds and Illusion controllers. Powers emissions from various parts of the body, as well as guns, wands, or staffs. That kind of stuff.

    7. A custom arch-villain system. I want to create my own nemesis and have him/her show up throughout my career. Radio/paper missions would be much more interesting if there was a chance my rival was in the mix, and it would become my story instead of someone else's story I was taking part in.

    8. AE in fewer zones, also with non-techy options. When I added AE, I would add buildings to only a few zones instead of most everywhere. I'd include a feature in mission creation (next to the select contact section) that allows you to set a holographic skin for the AE lobby/computer station/mission loading room, for when you're talking to the contact and/or in-between missions (i.e. a mystic workshop, or Atlas City Hall, or abandoned warehouse -- nothing breaks immersion in a magic-based AE mission than returning to the contact between missions). Otherwise, I'd have more than one AE building model; I'd at least have one in an older Croatoa-style building, less techy-looking and more mystic-looking.

    9. Better base editor, also allowing for player-created maps/zones. A better base editor is needed, so I'd like to see one that not only improved bases, but also allowed players to create their own building maps/outdoor maps for use in the AE. I'd kill to have a zone-editor that works like the map editor in Roller Coaster Tycoon.

    10. Three Origins. Finally, I'd reduce the number of origins to three -- sci-tech, natural, and magic. The overlap between some of what we have now is needlessly confusing.

I could go on, but that's ten, so I think I'll cut it off here.

  18. Update from War Witch here. Not until after the Thanksgiving holiday.

  19. My boyfriend's nearing his 60 month anniversary, while I'm around 45+.

Not long after finally giving in and becoming addicted to this game, I gave up my 20-year-long weekly comic book habit because it had become more fun playing this game than reading the same ol' titles, same ol' stories, month after month. Considering my monthly comic bill used to be closer to $100 a month, I honestly think of this game as saving me money. I'm still in a hero-verse, but I get to play my characters and tell my stories, my way. IOW, I treat CoH as my own sandbox MMO.

    For this pack? No thanks.

I get why you think it needs more (I don't agree, but I at least understand). But any fixes to the few glaring ommisions from previous packs need to be made part of the original packs those parts should come with. I mean, imagine the outcry if they decided that Organic w/ skin was gonna be in this pack and not the mutant pack? It doesn't make sense. Besides, I believe there's precident for them adding to a pack after the fact. Didn't they go back and add some weapons to one of the earlier packs? (Am I thinking of the Valkyrie swords?)

I'll fully support the idea of fixing some holes in previous packs, but I can't support tying them to this one. It will make future purchases of all packs needlessly confusing.

So, the point is, get back to boosters like the science, or the magic boosters, maybe do another round since you've covered all the origins.

    That is all.
Sorry, can't say I agree. At all.

The more I think about it, the more this one is becoming my favorite booster they've done. Fifteen costume pieces -- 5 capes and 10 auras (auras with multiple options) -- makes me a happy camper. I use capes often. I use auras often. If you don't, then your wallet should be excited you don't have to buy this one.

In fact, I'd much rather have more targeted boosters like this, which I can either take or leave, than have hodge-podge boosters which end up maybe having one or two things I like, but are otherwise filled with stuff I'll never use -- like the science booster, which was pretty useless to me except for the super tailor. None of the previous boosters besides Magic have looked as interesting to me as this -- 10 auras I can use from level 1.

I'm not disappointed, not one bit.

I'd figured as much, but nice to have confirmation.

With all the auras having combat mode options available on different body parts, it has really opened up a new side to the power customization we already have. My mage's plant control and weather summoning will soon activate with magical runes, and I could almost giggle with excitement about that.

Ten dollars for 10 fine-looking auras that can be customized to work with my costumes and my powers? I'd have been fine with just that, but there are also five capes, several of which interest me as well? I think that's pretty sweet, to be honest.

We all see value in different things, and I suspect I'm gonna get more value out of this booster than I have from any since the Magic one. That'll make it worth the price for me. YMMV.
