  1. LSK,

Yes, I plan to be a villain. Or rather, I will start as a hero, work my way to villain in the late 30s, then do the patron arc, then switch back. As for my accuracy being over the cap limit, I don't care about that really. I just took the powers and sets I needed for defense or recharge (in that order of priority). If I'm not getting some accuracy due to having too many sets, so be it. Oh and as for Grant Cover, I think a lot of my defense debuff resistance comes from that. Otherwise I'd love to drop it.

    Syntax,

Well I think that without combat jumping, I'm below the 46.5% value, tho I'd be over 45%. As for hover-tanking, I doubt I'll ever do it. I don't have hover anyway, unless jetpacks count. In fact, I don't really plan on Tanking at all. Its just a concept character and the 3 powersets I have (Shield, Ice, Mako) are required to meet it. That is why I didn't take taunt in the first place. But it just kinda bothers me to not have it, because I'm "supposed to" have it.

Ah well. More opinions are welcome. Thanks!

  2. All,

I'm planning out a Shield/Ice Tanker just because I want to try Ice Melee again and I figured I'd combine it with Shield Charge, Against All Odds, and 5 sweet AOEs. In fact, I'd rather make an Ice Melee/Shield scrapper but they don't exist. Knowing my luck they'll announce that once I'm too committed to click delete. if there exists such a time.

Anyway, I'm torn between having 49% def or so and perma-hasten (with Incarnates) OR having Taunt (at the expense of only 45% def and a loss of 7.5% global recharge).

Which would you choose? Basically its either Taunt or Combat Jumping.

Here is my build. The slotting is all over the place because it is the proof-of-concept. So please ignore when slots appear. This is the build with more defense and recharge but without Taunt.

    What would you do?

    Thanks,

    Lewis

  3. All,

TL;DR: Claws, Super Strength, Kinetic or Electric to pair with Energy Aura?

    Long Rambling Details:

I have a Dark Melee / Energy Aura Brute who is level 26 that I like, but I'm planning to delete him. I know that Dark Melee fits well (-acc, self-heal) with EA (def) but I think I'd rather do DM/Shield and then do something else with EA.

Of the following brutes, which mesh best with Energy Aura?

    Claws
    Super Strength
    Kinetic Melee
    Electric Melee

I don't have any specific goals for my primary. I've played them all before to level 50 on Brutes, Scrappers, or Tankers, so there isn't one I haven't tried yet. So it just comes down to "vibe" and the vibe I like (which doesn't match Brutes, but it is in my nature) is survivability. Slow and Steady. Relax but don't stop.

As for the other primaries, the above those which will have the least repeat issues for me (that are not also being worked on in some other build currently). That's where the list comes from.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Lewis
  4. Sweet. It was cool to see some Energy Assault love. I thought I was the only one.

    EDIT: P.S. Basenji = Rule!
  5. Why fire? Don't forget the 'why' ... its the most interesting part!

  6. All,

This is just a fluff piece, or a bit of conversation, or what-have-you. I'm wondering what your favorite assault set is, and why? Maybe it is your favorite for mechanical effect purposes, for min-maxing, or because of how the powers look, etc. Whatever the reason, I'm curious what you think.

    My favorite is Energy Assault.

I love the effects and the sounds, and I especially love the way some of the energy colors work when blended. The spinning blast effect from Power Push is gorgeous. People often say "wow" and ask me what it was. Also, I really like the knock-back in the set, which ranges in likelihood of triggering (depending on the power). I like the mix of single target ranged attacks and single target punches. I love how fast I can drop most bosses. I know a lot of players would prefer a damage buff, but I prefer to extend my control durations so that I have a more relaxing window in which to crush my enemies. Basically, I *love* me some Power Boost.

The down sides to the set would include having only one small mediocre AOE that is point blank; and having a Snipe. Now I personally sorta dig snipes, but I find I rarely use them, or sometimes I simply can't fit them in the build. From a practical perspective, Energy Assault has 2 powers I never take. So the set isn't perfect by any standard.

Nonetheless, Energy Assault is my favorite, hands down.

I think after that, my favorite would be Psionic Assault or Fiery Assault. They have better AOE power than Energy Assault. I just prefer control duration extension over damage boosts (Embrace of Fire) or self recovery and regeneration (Drain Psyche), and I like the effects from Energy more. I know that Psi and Fire are more min-max and all, but my heart lies close to Energy.

    What about you?

    Fire/Earth?

You don't really have to worry about the Fire Cages interfering, assuming you cast Power Boost, Flashfires and then Fire Cages. The -knockback component from Fire Cages only lasts 9 or 10 seconds, but the immobilize effect will last much longer. But not having knockback during the first 10 seconds of your attack wont usually be a problem since the foes will be disoriented anyway.

Now some foes resist stuns. In that case, use Cinders + Fire Cages instead; if they resist holds also, then fine ... in that case it makes sense to avoid Fire Cages and lean on the knockdown. But in 95% of situations, you can keep your foes mezzed (stunned or held) during the brief period of -knockdown caused by Fire Cages, so it generally won't matter.

I played up to level 50 and I can barely recall the times the -knockback had a negative impact on me.

  8. For better or worse, I do tend to have a ranged playstyle, somewhat. I usually open with power boost + flashfire + fire cages. I then throw in a fireball and cast rain of fire. Only then do I move in close. Then I use all my single target attacks, including bone smasher and total focus, to eliminate survivors as the Rain of Fire burns at them. However, I tend to remain at the edge of the pack working my way through them. I have perma-flashfire, so if for some reason they arent all dead, I can re-cast it and continue working through the bad guys.

I never really like to stand in the middle of the bad guys. I stay on the edge and melee/single target. I've found that standing in the middle of them gets me dead, at least vs some cheesy overpowered (compared to the rest of the game) groups.

So I like a ranged/fringe melee style. So neither Hot Feet nor Whirling Hands nor Snipe get used much. The only reason I feel I should consider Hot Feet is for the slow, to have a bit of a buffer between me and the baddies.

As for goals otherwise ... permahasten was a goal. Goal met.

EDIT: On other Fire Controllers and Dominators, I've been more willing to stand right among the bad guys. And I feel safer on my Earth/Energy so I tend to run into the VG/knockdown/control zone and single target some dudes. But for Fire/Energy I've just always been a bit ranged.

    Lewis
  9. I assume you meant to ask if I use Hover. Yes, I use it constantly. Not only do I prefer to play with Hover, I love it.

Also, I don't have access to Consume. Isnt that a Fire Assault power?

Thanks for the reply, and thanks to anyone else who replies also. I probably won't do the respec until over the weekend sometime, so I'm still wanting to hear opinions.

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  10. All,

So I have a cool perma-hasten Fire/Energy (Fire Epic) Dominator on live that I play and really enjoy. However, I slotted the Sniper Blast for a snipe set for the recharge bonus but I never use it really. Occasionally I shoot it and giggle but really, its doing nothing. I noticed I only have 4 LOTG global recharges and so I can pick up one more by swapping out the snipe for another concealment power and a 5th LOTG and keep the same global recharge.

The reason I want to do this is not only that I never really use the Snipe, but because it gives me 4 luxury slots. I'm pretty sure I want to throw 2 of those into my Fire Imps and get the Build Up proc, but I'm not really sure what else to do with my other 2 slots.

So I'm looking on advice for where to put 2 bonus slots.

Also, I skipped Hot Feet on this build, and I havent missed it. But I also notice that I pretty much never use Whirling Hands at all. It looks cool but I get much more mileage from my epic AOEs.

So my other question is ... should I drop Whirling Hands for Hot Feet? I could keep the same slotting and IOs.

Or should I go totally crazy and drop both Hot Feet and Whirling Hands and pick up yet another 5 slots, giving me 7 free slots?

Instinct tells me I should put Stealth and a LOTG in, move 2 slots to Fire Imps for numbers and the Build Up proc. I would then put an extra slot on Health for a Numina and another on one of my single target blasts so that I can pick up 6.25% global from the Decimation set while keeping numbers in the power that I find acceptable. This extra 6.25% global lets me swap out Whirling Hands for Hot Feet, drop a slot, min-max acc/dam/end in 5 slots, and use the other saved slot to throw a Kismet accuracy in Combat Jumping in order to make up (and then some) the loss of global accuracy from losing a 4-slot Thunderstrike.

But I'm wondering what YOU think.

    Thanks,

    Lewis

  11. Thanks for the replies. I appreciate it!

    Lewis
  12. Sorry, I was in team speak discussing it with a friend and kinda on obsessive compulsive auto-pilot in a couple of threads, not to mention in-game channel discussion. I didn't even quite realize I'd posted in 2 threads until it was done.

Consider me properly chastised and penitent.

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  13. I am hoping to side-step the ruffled feathers and bring the spotlight on whether the Black Scorpion list answers the question without anyone getting mad.

For example, Trickster isn't on Black Scorpion's list. It is a Vigilante-only badge.

I see the list of Hero/Vigilante and Villain/Rogue badges, and thats great info.

What I'm looking for would be a list of badges that you can only get as a Hero, but that a Vigilante cannot get. If that list can be further detailed to list which ones can only be got while leveling up and/or being in a tutorial then great.

Like, isnt there an AE badge you can only get as a Hero but not as a Vigilante?

I want to plan out my badge-hunting, and so I'd like to know which badges I can get as a Hero but not as a Vigilante, other than the Day Job ones (where at least I can earn credit).

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  14. Is there a consolidated list anywhere of the badges?

I dont consider Black Scorpion's list to be a Hero-Only or Villain-Only list.

There is a very short list of Hero-only badges, such as the 7 day timer of alignment reinforcing, at least I assume there is a Hero one. Some were referred to here in this thread, some werent mentioned by name (like the Hero mode AE). I know there are also Vigilante-only ones, like the 7-day timer one.

But it really would be nice to see a specific list. I'm planning to go Vigilante tonight for a long-haul switch for badge purposes, but I'm getting cold feet. I'd kinda like to knock out all the Hero ones that I can't earn as a Vigilante I become Vigilante status. Because once I do, I'll stay a Vigilante for maybe 6 months until I'm sure I'm ready to become a Villain, etc.

Thanks for any help or list or Hero only, Vigilante only, Villain only and Rogue only badges.

    Lewis
  15. Ok then. Thanks for the replies. I actually *DO* want Hot Feet, I was just open to considering anti-Hot Feet opinions. I will drop Mud Pots from my build, keep Hot Feet, put a 3rd Concealment power in the freed slot for a LOTG Recharge, and move my 4 saved slots to other places.

    Thanks!

    Lewis
  16. All,

I am trying to decide whether to include either or both Hot Feet and Mud Pots on my Fire/Earth Dominator. My build, including Cardiac, would let me run both with no worries. However, the radius on Mud Pots ... not good.

I have liked Hot Feet on my other Doms, so I'm planning on keeping that one. Unless someone has strong feelings against Hot Feet.

If I do drop Mud Pots, I have to decide whether to pick up Hurl Boulder (more for silly fun than anything else) or to just drop the slots here and there to shore up other powers.

Anyway, please let me know what you think.

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  17. I kinda like the old launcher. How long can I keep using it?

    Lewis
  18. Ah, well there we go. I have tried running my Mac Mini COH about a dozen times today, and on a whim I just tried one more time, and for some reason it saw the patch and its patching now.

I guess 13 is my lucky number.

    Lewis
  19. Launcher? I'm not sure I follow.

I heard something about a new Launcher that PC people have to use but that isn't implemented on the Mac yet. Is this what you mean? Or has it been implemented?

Anyway, do you have any suggestions?

I just finished doing a copy/paste from my Applications folder of City of Heroes over to my Mac Mini's public drive. I'm planning on deleting the City of Heroes application in the Applications folder on the Mini and then copying the one in its Public folder over into the Applications directory. It was only 4.55 gig or so.

Do you think that will work, or will that be a disaster?

    Thanks,

    Lewis
  20. All,

Today (May 3, 2011) there is a new patch. When I run COH on both of my iMacs, they patched up just fine. However, my Mac Mini simply can't see that there is a new patch today. It usually patches fine, it has been a champ for 6 months or more now, but today .... it just won't patch.

So my 2 iMacs are floating at today's version just fine (2010.201105021815.1) but my stupid Mac Mini is just hanging out at the previous version (2010.201104210057.1).

Does anyone know of a way to force it to update?

    Thanks,

    Lewis

EDIT: I tried Verify All Files but that doesn't seem to help in any way.
  21. Weird. I had the same reaction just today. And last week. And the week before. "This is my new character I only just made, how is it that I've not logged in for X number of days."

    Darned projects.

On a related note, I hate that I can't redeem my most recent extra character slot. I'm already at 36 characters on my main server. I wish we could have 60 characters per server. That'd do for a while.

    Shield/Ice?

Oh and this another possible build which has my Defenses way higher, still includes Frost, but I lose Ice Storm and Ice Blast and Block of Ice. So its less versatile, but tougher.

I unfortunately over-wrote my build that did not have Frost. It was about as tough as this tough build, and still had Ice Storm, Ice Blast and Block of Ice, but it just didnt have Frost.

But anyway this is another build WITH Frost, that is tougher, but I still question whether I should take Frost at all. Hmm.

    Shield/Ice?

I found this old thread so I figured I'd Necro it for a question.

Is it acceptable to make Shield/Ice and skip Frost? I have made (and deleted) probably a half dozen /Ice tankers at various levels (highest being a level 50 Fire/Ice) and I've had Frost in and out of my builds a dozen times, and I hate it. I just can't get the hang of using it. I've tried for hours and its just not fun for me. I hate thinking about it.

So, my plan is to go with Shield Charge, Frozen Aura, and Ice Storm, and call it a day.

Will this approach be adequate? I'm already level 25 or so and while I do wish for some AOE, I'm getting close to shield charge, so I'm feeling pretty good so far.

    Thanks,

    Lewis

EDIT: I decided to drop Tough and Weave. Painful. I'm still "almost" (44.8) softcapped to normal content but I added Frost in. Not sure if I should keep Frost or not. Bah humbug!

  24. You sure do have some weird slotting and sets.

Anyway, due to having to juggle data chunks between my iMac and a PC, it is sorta awkward for me to mod yours, but is easier for me to simply post my build/chunk, if only to show some of the sets that I think work a bit better. Use or ignore, as you prefer.
