  1. I must have missed that post of his. But if they are, then I have nothing else to say here.
  2. I play a Rad/Sonic Defender in PvP. You just need practice against Stalkers. It's frustrating, but once you get the hang of them they're not so bad. If you know there's a Stalker and you're not constantly moving with SS/SJ, expect at any moment to loose 1/2 of your health. And, when you do, MOVE! And heal too, whether via powerset heal, Respite, Aid Self, or what have you. If you're a ranged squishie, you need to kite them and keep up the pressure. If you keep hitting them, they cannot enter Hide unless they Placate and then do nothing. If they Placate, back off and keep moving so they can't fire off a second AS. Hopefully they'll throw a Shark or somesuch and break Placate. Yes, it'll crit (whether from Hide or Placate), but it's far better than getting smashed by AS. If you make it through the initial Hide break and Placate, you're pretty much homefree for killing them as long as you don't get a miss streak if they try to Hide again. Some may have Hibernate, however. Oh, and against the Stalkers not stacking stealth, perception will let you spot them. To outdo my Defender's Tactics, a Stalker needs Hide, Stealth, and a Stealth IO, otherwise I can see them at least at melee range.

Now, for the most important question: is your toon IOed out? You don't need purples/PvPs/HOs to be awesome, I personally do not use them and I do just fine. However, SOs do will not cut it against an IOed toon. Period. I'm not fond of huge inf investment requirement to be moderately successful in serious PvP, but it's there. You need IOs and at least the HP/End accolades too. They make HUGE difference. Between my IOs and my resistance toggle, Stalkers cannot two-shot me.

Now, if you really want to annoy Stalkers, I hear Earth/TA Controllers are perfect. They may not get the kills, but Stalkers can't AS through Earthquake (and quicksand too I think) and all those DoTs will prevent them from going into Hide for a good while. I have zero personal experience with this though.

Stalkers aren't a big deal, you just need practice. Now, Dominators... ::rages::
  3. You don't need to be near the softcap to feel the effects of defense. 10%ish is noticable, but minor in its effects (which is why pre-DO/SO /SR Scrappers might as well be gimped melee Blasters). Around 20-25% it becomes a more reliable form of mitigation, though far from able to save you from everything. And, as said above, 30%+ is more than enough to provide all the mitigation you'll need for the majority of the game's content, especially with the other benefits of /Shield backing it up.
  4. Please update the screenshots used in the zone loading screens for ultra mode graphics. It's weird to see shadowless scenes with jello water when, in-game, it looks much better... at least on my comp since some out there are still running minimum. And I just have high performance occlusion and ultra water, not everything on full.

If you're going to update the graphics, go ahead and update the other instances where it's shown off.
  5. Probably a selfish request, but I'd like to see a school in Atlas park near the Skyway gate. The reasons are RP related, hence why I'd like one there since there's a set of buildings I've designated as my character's school right around there.

Also, more building variety. Even if it's just some slight changes in colors, like making some of the brown brick buildings in Kings Row into red brick buildings, it'd make a big difference.
  6. Ran test, updated, updated my preferences but still no Shader options but it booted up promptly and didn't have the SG tab lag or anything of that nature. Ran the normal client out of curiosity and it booted promptly as well. Guess that one bug is still random and the long black screen is related as well (though that part is still new). In the mean time, trying to get NCSoft to move past giving me the instructions in the linked post.
  7. Here's what the console reports from booting up the game, going to the main screen, and then quitting. I bolded what looks like errors to me, though this isn't my area of expertise and I could be wrong.

  8. Oh no, not using that GMA950. After all the horror stories I've heard about that sucker, I don't want one of 'em within 300 feet of me. Instead, I'm using a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.

Redid everything as in the quoted post. Shaders are still unavailable. Prior to the patch, I had them. Also, since the patch, I'm also experiencing other aberrant behavior. Specifically, the CoH launcher now takes a long time to change "Quit" to "Next" after confirming my game is up to date. After clicking through the launcher to launch the actual game, the "Loading" banner no longer appears. Additionally, I get a black screen after a moment for about 10-20 seconds before the real "Loading" screen for CoH appears, whereas in the past it'd show up only a second or two after the black screen. Finally, opening the SG tab causes horrendous lag. Both this and the bug with it taking forever to let me click "Next" happened randomly in the past and are, apparently, related as they always occurred together. Now they happen every time.
  9. But why should I let them kill the minions. I'm a Scrapper, they're mine too! My teammates can take care of the underlings.

AoE-centric probably wasn't the best term, since in the powers I'm looking at taking I'm still going to keep Disembowel along with Hack and Headsplitter so I can still wipe the floor with hard targets when they appear. I just want to get a second build with actual AoE capacity beyond lining Headsplitter.
  10. Thanks for that feedback. Completely forgot about range-slotting cones.

Though I still argue that, even in those instances, Team Teleport would be more like griefing your team unless they're a regular group that are familiar with you doing that. Even if you announced ahead of time, someone on a PuG would likely go "WTF!?" if you team ported them in that instance.
  11. I question the usefulness of power F. You copy their look, stats, and origin but not their powers, leaving you with... your other copy powers, which would break your teammate copy. I don't see how that'd be useful at all.

Additionally, most mobs, even bosses, are significantly weaker than any individual player. Turning yourself into a minion would be just plain silly. I mean, how would you expect to accomplish anything at level 1 with about 20-50 HP and attacks that hit for maybe 10 on a good day? Shapeshifting is cool, but this isn't the way to do it.

Didn't mean to imply that one should base arcs on flash fiction (possible though, I'm sure), but more that it is VERY possible to tell a complete story in a single mission. I'd argue that to tell a story well in one mission is far harder than telling a story well in five.

Wish I had an example, but my only one-mission arc is more of a humor/inside joke arc. It's probably not even up anymore, considering un/resubs and numerous architect changes that could all potentially break it, since it was created back at I14 launch.
  13. I did read that post. That's how I got up and running again. It doesn't solve the issue of shaders deciding to become unavailable, however.
  14. Patched today with the 5/19/2010 patch. CoH black screened. Managed to fix it, but now I no longer have Shader options. I was running it on Low, but now "Shader Quality" displays as N/A. This is a new bug or is something else screwed up?
  15. At present, when picking a title, aside from all the other random words that come with leveling and, later, your origin, you have two options available since level one. You can pick either "The" or nothing. That's it. Why not toss in a few more choices? Off the top of my head, I can think of a few such as...

    That
    (Yet) Another
    Some (Other)
    This
    A/An
    Some
    Something
    There's (a)
    Those
    More

And et cetera. This would open up a bit more in the way for concepts in a far more subtle way than creating new costumes/powersets/custom animations/what have you, but it'd still help for those who could use them. For example I could have a hero and, with the new title options, he could be "That Legendary Guy" or "Yet Another Ultimate Powerful Hero".

Oh, and the plural terms? I'm sure someone out there has one or more toons with multiple personalities, refers to himself as "we" and "us", has multiple souls in one body, and/or any other similar concept. Also Kheldians. So, why exclude them?

Is it right to assume that Archetypes to a degree follow the traditional MMO typeset of tank, dps, healer etc, or is that not the case in CoX?

    ** Edit **
In the time I typed this, someone answered my question. Thank you.

Adding an additional comment on this. It's worth noting that the MMO "holy trinity" of tank/DPS/support doesn't necessarily apply to CoH. Yes, it still works just fine. But so would DPS/DPS/DPS, Support/Tank/Support, or whatever combination you can come up with. For the vast majority of CoH's content, the AT combination of your team matters much less than the players behind those ATs. A competent team of anything can tackle just about everything CoH can throw at them.
  17. Both of those should be worth editing in. Ideally though, I'd like more feedback before making any changes, if anyone else would like to take a crack at it.

    Ever heard of flash fiction?
  19. I have my own awesome BS/SR Scrapper who runs around laughing at anything that tries to hit him. I haven't finished his main build yet (very close though, just need a few expensive IOs), but I'm already looking at starting his alt-build up. Basically, as much as my Scrapper rocks and kicks butt, he's purely single-target damage. This is fine and dandy for solo or when I run up to a sack of HP, but when I team I'm not mowing down as many mobs as I'd like before the rest of the team does. And, as a Scrapper, that's unacceptable.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has any BS/SR builds with a more AoE-focus laying around that I can look at? Or, failing that, suggestions? Any will help, but I'm mainly looking at spending no more than a couple hundred mil, with the exception of merit-buying the Miracle, Regen, and Numi uniques. Being at the soft-cap is also highly desirable, but since this will mostly be for teaming, I probably won't need Aid Self.

Not asking that anyone go and spend a hour sitting down to making a build for me, but I won't stop you if you do. I'd sit and come up with a build myself, but there's still no Mac Mids, Sucker Punch lacks the tools I need, and doing it by hand from scratch takes forever. I'll probably still be working on my finished product by hand, but having something to work with would dramatically cut down the time.
  20. I have to wonder. What prevents OSA from going off but doesn't stop Nemesis Lts. from shooting off vengeance or robots from exploding? Could whatever mechanisms those powers use be used for OSA?
  21. For me, OSA decides if it's going to light or not when I zone. If it lights once in the zone, it'll keep lighting as long as I'm in that zone. If it doesn't, then it won't. It resets every time I zone.
  22. No no no no no no no no no no no no no no!

I love Wormhole, I'd never want to see it dumped. If anything was replaced, get rid of Dimension Shift.

    Oh, and also, Cottage Rule.
  23. For most, it would be faster and easier. However, if you intend to play pure-human, leveling as pure-human would let you learn to play one better rather than respecing/second building one at 50 and then dropping yourself into the cockpit. Tri-form and human-only are drastically different stylistically.

In PvP, when you attack or get hit, you get slowed (I'm suffering from a brain fart and cannot remember the proper term for that), like you do in PvE when using a travel power in combat. All you have to do to prevent escape is to shoot or be shot at. Lingering Radiation helps some, as does any mez attacks and Power Build Up (which boosts run/jump/fly speed) if you have 'em. Also, once the debuffs are down, they have to move too far for you to target for the debuffs to drop, and you can always simply chase them.

But yes, theoretically it could be done. However, they're better off eating a yellow or two and smacking you with a mez. And something along those lines is what usually happens... at least to me.

This bears some further examination. If you are a squishy AT, +def and +res buffs are likely to be pretty worthless because of DR on the def and the presence of near-cap resists on most squishies with an epic shield.

However, a melee can take full advantage of these buffs.

Then there's frostworks. While some squishies will have near-cap +hp builds for pvp, many won't and adding a few hundred hp to them makes a big difference in survivability. Most melees won't be near their cap and also benefit from a huge chunk of extra hp.
Defense sets will DR off the cold shields like crazy. A character with PvE softcap has about 33% defense in PvP. I once got bubbled by a FF Defender in a zone when I was messing around on my soft-capped BS/SR Scrapper. I got an additional 1%ish defense. Resist sets would be the reverse. Hybrid sets, like Willpower, will DR BOTH aspects of the buffs.

Defenders, Corruptors, Masterminds, and Controllers inherently benefit less from all buffs in PvP. They have a lower cap or higher DR curve or some other silly mechanic. Probably the best for buffing, besides melee without the effect you're buffing up, would be the non-buffing squishies.

Frostworks... not so sure how it works in PvP. Is +HP affected by DR? My Rad/Sonic's PvP build and my BS/SR's AV solo build don't lose HP in PvP zones, but they aren't capped either, so I can't say. Is it reduced by other +HP buffs being on? If you buff a non-capped perma-DP Tank with Frostworks, will the benefit be reduced? Someone with a high level Cold would have to look into that.

Infrigidate has a fairly short recharge. Benumb and heat loss are pretty long. If you are the unlucky soul to get all three of them landed on you, well, enjoy staring at the tiny dots on your power tray from all the -recharge. Not too many sets outside of SR have enough def debuff resist to avoid getting their defense crippled by all the -def.

Sleet is... situational. That is, you have to look out for opportunities to make use of it and exploit them, as opposed to targetted debuffs you can fire off whenever you please. I wouldn't say that makes it worthless.

Snowstorm has its use, for -fly. With temp fly being standard issue, there's always some clown in the air you'd rather have on the ground.

They HAVE to have a serious amount of recharge bonuses in order to get benumb and heat loss out when they're needed.

Ok, long recharges on those two, which from what I've heard are super awesomesauce skills. Yeah, being hit by all three would probably suck if you don't have some built-in recharge debuff resistance, but the fact they aren't up often makes them a little un-ideal. Unless you're doing PvP where you start each fight fully recharged and don't need to worry about being attacked by a new person while your powers are on cooldown, they'd probably rock. But really, faster recharging powers are generally "better" in PvP, mostly because they're available more often. EM Pulse, for example, SUCKS to get hit by, but the recharge is so long that, even without the crash, I'd never take it over anything else I have for PvP.

As for landing Sleet and etc, you two must be a heck of a lot better than the people I've seen using locational AoEs. I don't know how many Shield Charges, Lightning Rods, Fire Storms, Sleets, and so forth I've seen miss by huge margins against a mobile target.

Oh, and almost forgot, even SR is lacking in defense debuff resistance in PvP. My aforementioned Scrapper? Only 72% instead of 95%. He got dropped to 23% by a Sonic/Rad Corruptor. I'd hate to see what a defense-debuffing Defender could do. But, Rad Em, Cold Dom, Rad Blast... if they're not in Elude (or a clone), you can pretty much screw 'em over on defense.
  25. I love my Human-only PB, currently level 40. Low levels kind of sucked due to high end costs and low damage, but it eventually smooths itself all out. I've gone from being feeble to rushing in and smacking everything without much fear. I don't even worry about going toe to toe against non-boss Quants and Voids. I play her like a Blapper, using both melee and ranged attacks. I typically jump into a group, hit Pulsar and Solar Flare, and then take out my opponent single-target style.

When I hit 50, my power selection will look more or less like this. I didn't do enhancements because 1) I'd need to log in and 2) I gotta go in about 3 minutes. I may have messed up the order I picked my pre-30s powers, so don't take that as literal truth for what I did.
