Okay, I only found out about the game itself in 2009. These were well before my time, I had no idea they existed.
Thanks for bringing this up! These are hilarious! -
Congrats to the winners! And to the host for getting some great group outfits too
-
I don't know what a fife is, but consider it busted! And count me one hat richer. Wheeee!
Be careful playing with time like that... one wrong number and the sale could end up starting back in 1955! Then it'll have to make sure its father asks its mother to the Enhancement Under The Sea dance. -
Quote:When you put it that way it does sound like a bad decision from their standpoint, yeah.Being able to trade them would make the system more deterministic- ... far fewer purchases would be needed to fill out the player's shopping list.
So what if we drop the idea of buying anything that's currently in the packs or market, and just use this to offer items that are unavailable through other means? Like the retired Celestial set for example, or consumable options that aren't in the packs, such as Small-sized team and dual inspirations. That way you're not bypassing existing income sources; you would still need to have bought Super Packs (or the market items that appear in them) to gain the necessary currency. But rather than detracting from sales of the packs, it could help provoke their sales by creating an additional source of exclusive / preferred items. -
Quote:I'm starting to think the same thing, yeah. I mean I understand it... they want a product based in randomness to stay random. Makes sense, no doubt. I just can't help thinking they'd improve sales if people felt like they could offset that randomness at a later point. One of the main reasons gievn by players who don't buy these is that they don't want large stockpiles of unused items. And a "hobby shop owner" that you swap cards with could certainly help promote the collectible cards vibe that they're looking for.Good luck with this idea. I like it but don't see it happening.
Maybe once the third and fourth pack series come out, they might be more willing to put the first two into some kind of system like this. Or they could retire earlier series and just put the exclusive stuff from them into this inventory. The costume sets and ultra rares, ATOs, things that didn't get carried forward into the new series. And possibly things like retired T9 VIP stuff and brand new items as well. That would give them a way to offer retired and otherwise exclusive things, that still requires spending further money (through converting unwanted Super Pack items into Trading Cards). -
Quote:Have they come right out and said that, then? Cause that would kinda shoot this in the foot, yeah. Hrrrm. =/The devs want it to be relatively random and I don't see suggestions to make it even more deterministic than it already is getting much play.
Quote:Also, I like it being random.
Ah well, they've changed their minds on things before. Something like it might still happen one day. -
Lets you trade in cards you don't use to get the costumes and rares, or other cards you like better.
The idea I had was to create a vendor and a new function in the character item window, which together would let you turn the super pack cards you don't use into things that you do want. Selected entries in the Character Items list (specifically, all the items you can get in Super Packs * ) would have a new "Trade" button available. Using it removes the item from your list, but rather than getting the item itself you gain its value in a special salvage called "Super Cards".
( * Except for Catalysts, since they can drop in-game. They could lose too many potential sales due to people farming Catalysts to get all the high-end rewards.)
Super Cards by themselves are untradable, but you can use them at the "Card Collector" vendor to purchase certain items. Their list includes:
- Consumables from Super Packs (maybe other consumables as well)
- Costume pieces and rare prizes from Super Packs
- Retired Tier 9 VIP costume pieces (possibly other retired items as well)
- Holiday-exclusive powers, costume pieces, emotes, etc (thus making them available year round, although at a considerably higher price)
- Brand new powers or costume pieces exclusive to the Card Collector
Of course there has to be a price paid for convenience, so the conversion rate would be adjusted to reflect that. Meaning you would have to Trade in, say, three Common cards' worth of items to get one Common card's worth in return. For example, Trading in one charge of Restore gets you one Super Card, and it would take three Super Cards to purchase a Dual Inspiration.
One hitch I thought of was that many of these items can be bought on the market directly. But then I realized, so what? That still leads to the same end result... players spending money in the market. The key point here is that players can only get Super Cards through things they have spent actual money on, whether that's Super Packs or direct purchases. Even the bonuses from assigning Reward Tokens are (1) very limited in number, and (2) the direct result of spending money.
What this would allow is:
- Greater versatility in the rewards that players get from spending their money, particularly considering what many call the "gambling" nature of super packs
- A reliable and permanent means of getting certain items that are otherwise frustrating or impossible to obtain
- A way to help players feel like they are getting better value from the purchases they make, regardless of which reward types they prefer
- Players may become more willing to buy bundles of items, knowing that "leftovers" will no longer go to waste. Rather than sit unclaimed in their inbox for months, they can be turned in for things the player can and would use regularly -
This is a cool way to hold a contest, first time I've seen it. I like it! Hope my entry's not too late... for some reason I kept remembering the deadline as the 29th. Good thing I checked again tonight
So here's my entries:
In fact looking at it now, I think it would look better without the Tri-top on the helmet. Anyway though, I hope you end up with a uniform you're happy with - and you probably will, these entries are pretty cool -
I agree with your post completely, but this part made me think of something. From what I can see the Offense Amplifier grants a 10% ToHit bonus. Not Accuracy, but specifically ToHit. I think that might turn out useful for many when the Snipe power changes get put in. Especially for those who don't play all the time, or who don't play blast sets all the time, so they don't have to buy endless supplies of them.
-
Waaaaaiiittt a minute. Everything I can find says Offense Amplifiers grant a 10% ToHit bonus. Not Accuracy; ToHit. If that's true... *looks at the upcoming Snipe changes with a small grin*
Quote:On the other hand, catering to people like that is dangerous. Once you turn your butcher shop into a bakery, those people are just as likely to go find the next butcher shop and start asking them for bread. Because seriously, people who can't tell the difference between a butcher shop and a bakery are pretty far from reliable.Haha I work in customer services and I agree with you 100%, but the spirit of the words is right. If you own a butchers shop and everyone comes in asking for bread there is no point saying 'I don't sell bread', damn well make some and sell them it, even if it means you have to stop selling meat. -
My go-to response for most non-obvious computer troubles is:
1) Turn off the computer and modem
2) Turn off and unplug the power bar
3) Unplug the computer and modem from the power bar
3b) If it's a laptop, pop the battery out for a couple seconds, then put it back in
4) Wait about ten seconds
5) Reconnect everything
6) Plug it all back in
7) Turn it all back on
Mystifyingly, this works like a charm nine times out of ten. -
Awwwww... that's really sad news. I always thought you were very funny, with moments of pure hilariousnessosity.
I can understand why you'd feel that way though, if you've been getting such flak over it. So if you feel like it's time to stop, well hey, you do what you gotta do.
But please, at least don't go around thinking that everybody thought you were un-funny. Cause I promise that not everybody thought that.
/e waves. "Stay safe out there, hero." -
Quote:Stay tuned tomorrow for the exciting series premiere of "Mechs and the City"!... we will be introducing the new Tier 9 VIP Reward, The Mecha Armor costume set, on 5/31/2012 ...
Also, yay for convenient transport systems! And shadowy spirit dimensions with floaty lanterns! And folks with chainmail bits on! Wooo! -

Whoa whoa whoa! Let's not rush into things... there are a lot of moving parts to bacon. Let's get some basic info first.
1) Would this be a buff to existing bacon levels or a completely new source of bacon?
2) Are we talking about a temporary bacon power? Bacon melee? Bacon Masterminds? A bacon based power pool?
3) If it is indeed a consumable, would it be offered in lots of 1, 3 and 5 charges of bacon? Or will it be more like 5, 30 and 90?
And finally,
4) Can we have the npc costume pieces as well?
...
But seriously. Paragon Studios: Thank you for the free charge of XP Bacon! ...Aw, dangit. I mean for the free charge of Bacon Booster. DANGIT! You know what I mean. Thanks! -
Quote:Y'know, I was thinking about that. If they did want to offer some kind of unlockable, which some people would already own or might not want, they could always make it a choice.Except they explicitly said that it wouldn't be something that any portion of the player base would be ineligible for. Costume pieces and slots could be owned by some people, and not others, which would sort of disqualify them.
Already have the origins capes? Well here, have a five-pack of team resistance insps instead! Don't like the volcanic aura? Then how about an ally rez?
Edit: Forgot to say, I'm all on board with this program. Free stuff? Cool by me, man. Thanks! -

Yeah, I was standing in the train station in Kings yesterday... just talking to someone, not on a team or league or anything... and I get the Nemesis Plot badge popup. There may have been a GM close by, I have no idea, I hadn't even left the train station after logging in. But I definitely was not even remotely partaking in the event yet.
Not that I'm complaining, now... just saying it might actually be distance related or zone-wide. -
I can't help thinking that if they're too similar, there'll be no reason to buy the second pack.
My guess is they'll keep the reward merits because getting them in bulk makes a great core to package the rest of the items around. There'll also be another small "gotta get em all" bundle like a costume set, and an exclusive vanity item like a pet. Stuff like that appeals to quite a number of people, so it makes sense to throw in a few. But if they want the second pack to reach the volume of sales that the first pack has shown, then they really want to offer a significant difference in the remainder of the items.
For example, instead of offering inf and xp boosters again, they could go with charges of temp powers. Things like hand grenades and warwolf summons. A neat little bag of tricks that you don't have to craft first or run stale missions to get.
Charges of the five-minute version of mission teleporter that you get from the rewards program would be handy. Sometimes you're finished before the two-hour or thirty-minute cooldown comes back around.
Or charges of a power that lets you summon any gladiator that the character has unlocked, as a pet. Say for an hour of in-game time as a vanity pet, or x minutes (based on its rank) as a combat pet.
And rather than dual or team insps, they might go with Focused Inspirations. Each one would provide a boost to damage of one type as well as a defense or resistance boost against damage of the same type. Such as Frigid Focus: +33% cold damage, and +24% defense versus cold damage, for five minutes. The rates would be on par with the dual insps currently available, but more tailored to specific situations or characters.
Converters would be a great replacement for boosters or unslotters.
The ATOs will be a different set than the first one had, so that's fine.
In place of Catalysts, they could go with Enhancement Tuners. Each Tuner would turn one ingame set IO into an attuned version. Trading causes it to lose its attuned status and revert to a regular ingame set IO. (You could mention non-VIPs at this point, but non-VIPs can't use reward merits either, and the first super pack was chock full of those.)
That's what they'd have if I was choosing it. -
First time I heard of City of Heroes? One of the longtime players here (dunno if he'd want me dropping his name, so I won't) used to make mods for another game I played, and I started reading his blog. One day he mentioned an MMO where you get to play superhero type characters. I was like *jaw drop* seriously?!? Now this I gotta check out. Two days into the trial I subscribed, and I've been here just over three years now... guess I owe that dude a coke. Thanks for the heads up on it man!
And Paragon? Happy eighth you crazy kids!

How about if the choices of what pets you could summon were picked from the list of gladiators that character had unlocked? There have been a few ideas over the years as to what more could be done with those guys besides just arena fights. Two birds with one stone, kinda deal.

Quote:The 'fee' we pay to use /auctionhouse is reaching Tier 8 in the Rewards Program. That's a minimum of 28 tokens earned before you even have the option to use it. That's enough of an up-front charge, there's no reason to add per-use fees on top of it. Plus it's a step backward to charge a tax on something intended as a privilege for valued customers. It would create more ill will than good.I realize this suggestion guaranteed to be unpopular, but I am genuinely curious to see if someone can come up with an counter-argument more sophisticated than NO, NOT MAH MONIEZ!!11 =P
I wholeheartedly agree with wanting to see more public gathering places, but not this way. The only extra people this would send to the market are folks who aren't willing to part with even the tiniest drop of inf, adn I don't like being near even one person like that, let alone a herd of them -
