Or to put it another way, if a local pizza place has a deal where if you order $20 or more you get a free two-liter, and I place a $23 order, I'm not out of line to ask the delivery guy "hey, where's my soda?" if I don't get one. Even though it's advertised as "free if you buy this."

Quote:Thank you. I thought I'd slipped into Praetoria where everything is wonky.Hehe, Forbin, you're suffering a bit of reading comprehension there. No worries, we all make mistakes... even drunken squirrels.
As you quoted, he said,
"it was a very obscure alternative name for an ogre before Tolkien revived it"
That "before" that you are so confused about is not about Blizzard and WoW being before Tolkien... It is about the word being obscure before Tolkien brought it into the somewhat common vernacular.
All this said... I don't find the inclusion of WoW to really have been worth any of this as I don't think there was any question about the validity of using the word "orc"... but they didn't say what you thought they said.
I hope that made sense! -
Quote:And none of them invented the term Orc. It's Old English (originally orke), and it means ogre or giant. Which is why, yes, Tolkien revived it.Before Tolkien revived it?
Before?
Are you serious?
You do realize Tolkien published his books back in 1954 right? And Dungeons and Dragon was using orcs since 1974.
Blizzard Entertainment didn't exist as a company until the 1990's, and it's Warcraft series was released in 1994. -
To illustrate, I have two level 50s, and eleventy-jillion alts I only ever log one of those 50s on, and that's just because she's my crafter.

Quote:For me, leveling is fun. Unlocking further abilities with my character, seeing them grow. Street sweeping is also fun. I like a little randomness now and then. (Not idiocy, like the Nemesis event, just a little randomness.) Plus, sometimes I don't have a long time to play and I just want to kill ten minutes. A door mission resets when you log out, a "kill X" mission does not. That's a matter of opinion. The "fun" part, that is. Has nothing to do with the reward for me. Fun is the reward.
Also, if a bounty officer were in place for "kill X" missions, you might see less of them in other mission arcs. Everyone wins. -
Quote:Well, I'd kind of like a possible alternative to door missions. There are times I would just love to sweep again, but the difference in reward for the two is very steep. What about version of Tips/Adamastor's summoning recipe? Like you'd get a Tip/recipe drop that told you thatm, say, a nearby jewelry store was being robbed - going to any jewelry store and activating the Tip/Recipe would spawn a costumed Villain and some hired thugs from the door, kinda like a Halloween ambush.
See above. Sweeping is fun, but ultimately of lesser reward.
Quote:I would like to see street sweeping give you key missions like safeguards.
a chance to find out about a small door mission nearby -
Quote:No, I mean specific bounty contacts. They only hand out bounties, and nothing else. So instead of being the annoyance that they are when they break the flow of missions, they're something you can do if you choose, and get good EXP and/or other rewards for completing them.I assume that you're either new to the game, or you're making a facetious suggestion to be humorous
.
They already have missions like that, and they're terrible. Nothing breaks up a team that's steamrolling missions faster than getting a "Defeat 50 Carnies in Peregrine Island" mission. Suddenly everyone says, "Oh, my SG is calling," "I gotta do my homework," "wife aggro," etc., etc.
Running around a huge zone looking for particular mobs is boring, plain and simple, and it can be aggravating when those mobs are in short supply and another team is hunting for them and taking them away from you.
The devs invented new technology to make these missions more palatable with Freedom, and it's just ridiculous. If you do the low-level Habashy arc you get sent to defeat Hellions, and they spawn out of thin air if you stand there after you defeat one. The game is otherwise carefully programmed to explicitly avoid that kind of nonsense, but when you have lots of players doing hunts in the same open zone you have little choice but to use the WoW-type sillyspawn.
There's even a task force whose major component is running around the entire city defeating 10-30 mobs of 12 different groups. The most annoying thing about this is that if certain kinds of zone events start while you're doing this, the mobs you're supposed to hunt don't spawn anymore and you may have to wait half an hour for the zone event to end so you can finish your hunts. -
Quote:Think hard on why they'd remove that defeat from a game where roughly 50% of the characters are female. Some years ago CoH had two defeat poses. The one, which is still the current, is to faceplant. The second was to end up lying on your back with arms and legs spread somewhat. It was random which defeat pose would come up when your character was defeated. I like this as it gave a little bit of varity for a group of PCs all defeat in battle at the same time.
Why the Devs removed this alternate defeat animation I do not know, but I'd love to see it returned to this game. -
I'd like to see a new mission type: bounties. "Defeat 30 Outcasts", "Defeat 10 Hewers", "Defeat 15 Family Lieutenants", that sort of thing.

Quote:But isn't it a thank you to the player? That's my point, overall. Also, I think you'd see more second account holders. It's actually the main reason I don't have a second. If I could go back in time and set my second up retroactively, I would./unsigned too. IME, vet rewards are a thank you by the devs for your loyalty keeping the account active. You kept an account open for 6 years- grats! you get the benefits. You kept an account open for 1 month, you don't get the same benefit.
You aren't cheated in any way here. You were given the rewards for what you did - keeping an account open. Want more? Keep more accounts open that period of time.
Plus all this linking and dropping sounds like a CS nightmare to manage and overly complicated. -
Quote:Hundreds of dollars for temporary vet status? Seriously? I don't see that a few benefits that aren't applied permanently would be worth that much. But hey, I'm not a gold farmer, so maybe a couple of temp powers and costume pieces are worth three figures. Sounds silly, but what do I know./unsigned.
If this was implemented RMT sites will then be able to sell instant vet accounts to people. Simply "create" a new account and link it to get the vet status and then sell the login and password to some schmuck for hundreds of dollars.
And RMT sites don't care if their "customers" get screwed on the deal. They will most likely already be fraudulently using the morons credit card info.
Furthermore the customers that get screwed on the deals won't be blaming the RMT sites, because that would mean admitting they were doing something stupid and wrong. Instead they'll play the innocent victim and paint CoH as the bad guys which will drive away potential customers. -
Quote:I have characters spread over all three sides, on all 11 US servers. I have no free character slots. Most of the time, the base isn't going to do it for me (although I do use it where I can).I made two crafting toons (red/blue) before email. I just used the bins in the SG base, stock up, relog on new toon and get stuff.
Also, as for the multiple accounts issue... well, I do have another topic below titled "linked accounts"...
Failing using the mail system, what abut repurposing the storage vaults as a global vault? (Yes, I know it's been proposed before, bear with me here.) Place a 5 second restriction on each item placement, allow no more than 300 vault transactions per day, and keep the 30 item limit, or up it to 50. You don't even have to replace the current functionality, you can add an extra tab.
Failing all of that, would it kill them to put the 15 second timer on the mail tab as a countdown (so that every second "Send (15)" becomes "Send (14)", etc.)? -
Quote:The question is, is it necessary to put those restrictions on self-only mail? Outgoing mail would still be completely subject to the above restrictions (I'd even agree to increasing the restrictions... say 50 max per day, with 20-30 seconds between each mail). Both restrictions are in place to put a brake on the things that RMT farmers do. It is unlikely such restrictions would ever be removed.
Or do I (thankfully) not know much about gold farming? -
Quote:Duh me. I forgot that one. Probably because I've worked around it so much (I don't have a single server without a "vanity SG" and at least one level 10 I can mail to.)Ironically I can live with all those current email limitations/restrictions but the one that bothers me the most that you didn't mention is that characters have to be level 10 before they can send emails.
Now I completely understand why that restriction exists in general because it helps prevent RMT spammers from sending emails to strangers with quickly created characters. But why would there need to be such a restriction on one of my own low level characters sending email to another one of my own characters?
I have a number of low level "mule" characters that I've used for years (even prior to the markets) to hold items for my other active characters. But with this level 10 restriction it makes it very hard to move things back and forth between my own characters without wasting the time to PL a mule up to level 10.
If the Devs just made it so any character you own can send email to any other character you own regardless of level I'd be happy enough. -
I do a lot of mailing... I have a crafting character that supplies IOs to everyone else on my account. I can't be the only person who does this. Doing so, however, exposes a few problems with the mail system.
There's a 15 second delay between mails sent, for prevention of spamming. There's also a limit of items in your inbox (20), and a daily limit of mails sent (150). I propose that we do away with all of these for mail sent to your own global. I'm not going to spam myself. That would be just silly.
Include a new label on the mail window: Self. Mail sent here requires no address, or rather it's already auto-filled in for you. You can send as much as you want*, as often as you want*.
* Amended idea, in case that's too unrestricted. Reduce re-mail time to 5 seconds, increase inbox size to 50, and daily limit to 300, for that section only.
Thoughts? -
I have often noticed that the solution to "I don't have enough character slots" is "get a second account". and in many other games, this is a grand idea. But it's not as feasible for CoX. Veteran rewards, while not important individually, drastically alter the game as your account ages.
I'm in over the six year mark, and there's no way I could play the game from scratch again. The game at 0 months and at 75 months is so vastly different as to practically be a different game. So here's the suggestion:
Allow an account to be linked with another account registered to the same person on the same credit card. The linked account would then share the benefits of the main account. Veteran rewards are granted to players, why should it matter that one of the accounts (of two that both belong to me) was created years later? In fact, I'd say it speaks more to my customer loyalty that I have a second account.
This wouldn't give anyone an advantage that they don't already have. People would still have to pay for a second account. Include a $10 "Link charge" to actually link the two accounts. If the main account drops at any time, the secondary account loses all access to rewards gained from the link (but none from time that the account has actually been active). If either account drop at any time, then relinking costs another $10 fee.

Late to the party, don't care, /signed
I have a power armor character who cycles between five different armors, and she'd have more if I could. What I'd LOVE to see is the ability to have huge female models. I would love to have an oversized power armor with a female voice. -
(This isn't MMO specific, although some of these points do obviously correspond to CoX as much as any game.
In general, I've noticed a certain lack of courtesy, and want to address that. NOTE: These are written as "commandments" but are not a) religious in nature, or b) an attempt at "forcing" people to play my way. I just wanted to frame them as the granddaddy of all top ten lists.)
Ten Commandments of MMO Gaming
1) You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me -- there's nothing more annoying than someone in zonewide chat who can't shut up about how XGame is better than YGame (the game you're currently playing). For me, it always leads me to ask myself... why aren't they playing XGame, if it's so amazing?
2) You Shall Not Make (For) Yourself An Idol -- When doing pick-up groups, I find there's usually one guy who can't stop talking about how you're playing your class wrong, and if you'd play it HIS way (the RIGHT way), you'd all be cleaning up and killing the enemy at least 80% faster than you are now.
3) Do Not Take The Name Of The Lord In Vain -- Which could also be renamed... Thou SHall Not Be A Pottymouth. Let's face it, other than big ol' number one up there, nothing will kill a zonewide discussion faster than someone who can't turn on their brain-to-fingers filter. It's an MMO, chances are there are kids playing this thing. Even if not, chances are there IS someone playing who doesn't like to see profanity splayed out like you're doing a gangta rap album. Be courteous, for @#^$ sake.
4) Remember The Sabbath And Keep It Holy -- In some games, there is a very healthy and complicated Endgame. Some of those have raid content that is somewhat rare (some spawns don't spawn except once every X number of days.) They often set up what has become known as a Raid Schedule. Do not "jump" your place on the Schedule. This represents a huge investment of time and planning to execute, and it will not end well for you, ever. There is nothing that can doom a guild faster than their reputation as a guild falling into the sewer. It's the kind of thing that can dog you long after you've left the guild.
5) Honor Your Father And Mother -- Or in this case, your main tank. If the main tank is trying to tell you something, you should really listen, because it's their responsibility to keep the group alive. Similarily, let the tank get aggro, it's their job. (Looking at you, DPS guys. Don't overnuke.)
6) Thou Shall Not KIll -- Some games still have spawns which, if you run, will follow you. And in some of them, these spawns will aggro onto other players if they can't catch you. Do not train these guys onto your fellow players... that is, don't run over other groups just so the spawns will stop following you. In games where it's possible, it's almost always a bannable offense, and even if not, it's a jerk thing to do.
7) Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery -- If you're in a group, and you see an advertisement for another group, give it some thought before you drop your current group like they're DOTed. And especially don't say something classy like "so long losers, these guys probably know how to play better than you." Your fellow gamers have long memories, and they keep lists.
8) Thou Shall Not Steal -- In most games, spawns can be attacked by anyone, even if they're already being attacked. For GMs sake, leave the ones being attacked alone. Every group a player fights represents a time investment. For most players, they weigh every spawn to figure out if it's worth their while. When you kill steal, you are stealing time. More to the point, you are rendering that decision to attack the spawn worthless by changing the variable. If the other player's in trouble, that's one thing, but if there's time to fire off a "need help" tell, DO IT.
9) Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness -- All we have in a game is our reptation. Don't lie about other players to make them look bad just because you got into a disagreement. Usually, you'll be found out, and it's your rep that will suffer.
10) Thou Shall Not Covet -- In some games, loot is somewhat free-for-all. Anyone in the group can loot any item. And often, a group will agree to certain rules (i.e., mage items go to the mage, whereas warrior items go to the warrior). If you're in one of these groups, and you're a mage, and you're rolling on a +12 Sword of Mastery of Hacking... then you're being a colossal jerk. And you'll probably be the one whining the loudest when the ranger wins that Robe Of Pwnery. -
I want more characters.
More servers would give me more characters.
So for, uh, the good of the community (yesss... the community), merge the server lists and give us access to the character slots... er, players... on the EU servers. -
My problem with using email is threefold:
1) You can't mail stacks. Hope you don't need a lot of any particular thing.
2) 15 second delay between emails. If you need 8 Runebound Armor, that's going to take you two minutes of thumb-up-your-tights sitting around.
3) Hard daily cap on emails. You can only do 150 emails per day.
My solution is simple: Make stacks able to mail and eliminate the email limits *if you are emailing your own account*. (Either a specific character, or your @name) -

I have a character who is a star-spangled power armor type. Think Iron Man and Captain America all mixed up, but before there was such a thing as the Iron Patriot. =P
She has five different armor designs, but I want MOAR! Think "Hall of Armor" from Iron Man. I would very much like to be able to swap between ten different armors... mostly, because her armors are kept on an orbital platform that can "hotswap" different armor builds depending on the needs of the mission. ("Needs suit Alpha-4, stat.")
Also, the removing hats and helmets thing? Never thought of that. And now I'm obsessing over the concept just a liiiiittle too much. -
If I go to the moon, I can jump further due to the lower gravity. It is completely natural that I can do so. If a Kryptonian comes to Earth, they have standard Kryptonian-type powers. Because it is natural for them to do so.
For me, the Natural origin means simply "this is something that every member of this race can do without exposure to unusual outside stimuli"
